Start with shape: a gaming mouse should fit your hand and feel natural in your grip. Then compare weight, tracking, switches, polling rate, wireless and battery features, and button layout against the games you play. A high maximum DPI or polling-rate number is a specification—not proof that a mouse will suit you or improve your aim.
How do you choose the right gaming mouse size and grip shape?
Logitech G’s gaming mouse guide puts comfort and hand size first: “Comfort is crucial for long gaming sessions, so choose a gaming mouse that fits your play style and hand size.” Treat that as a starting point, not a universal shape formula; preference is personal, and measurements alone cannot tell you how a mouse will feel.

Match the shape to your natural grip
Logitech G describes three common grips: palm, claw, and fingertip. With a palm grip, much of the hand rests on the mouse; a claw grip arches the fingers; and a fingertip grip uses the fingertips to control it. A mouse that feels comfortable in one grip may feel awkward in another, so consider how you actually hold the mouse rather than trying to adopt a grip to suit a particular model.
Compare dimensions, contour, and button placement
Check the mouse’s length, width, and height, along with its contour and where the buttons fall under your fingers. Also check whether the design is right- or left-handed, or shaped symmetrically. Logitech G’s mouse shape guide and Razer’s mouse fit finder can help you think through fit. If possible, try the mouse in person: hand measurements and product photos are useful filters, but they cannot replace how it feels in your grip.

How much should weight matter?
Weight is a comfort and control preference, not a quality score. Consider how the mouse feels through the movements you make in your games, and whether you prefer a lighter or heavier device. Compare the stated weight of the exact model and configuration you are considering; wireless versions, included components, or other variants can differ. A number by itself cannot tell you which weight will feel best.
What should you look for in a gaming mouse sensor?
Look beyond the maximum DPI figure. DPI describes how far the pointer moves relative to the mouse’s physical movement at a chosen sensitivity setting. A large maximum tells you the sensor’s stated upper range; it does not show whether tracking is reliable or whether the setting is useful for you. Logitech G’s guide describes optical tracking and DPI as features, but does not provide independent comparative sensor testing.

- HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
- 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay
- Adjustable weights: Match your playing style. Arrange up to five 3.6 g weights for a personalized weight and balance configuration

- Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback
Compare the usable sensitivity range and how easily the mouse lets you configure it. Your chosen setting depends on your preferences and setup; the largest number on a spec sheet is not evidence of better aim. When comparing models, distinguish the manufacturer’s specifications and performance claims from independent measurements.

How do switches and click feel differ?
Switch design and click feel vary by model. Manufacturer materials describe both hybrid optical-mechanical and optical switch options, but the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for feel, durability, or latency. If click feel matters to you, try the specific mouse where possible and check its model-specific switch description rather than assuming a switch category guarantees a particular experience.

Does polling rate matter, and what are the trade-offs?
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports its position to the computer. A higher rate can make input feel smoother, but it is not automatically the right choice for every setup. Logitech G says higher rates can use more wireless battery and somewhat more CPU; its polling-rate explainer outlines those trade-offs.
Check which polling options the specific mouse supports and consider whether their benefits matter for your setup and priorities. A maximum rate is a capability specification, not a standalone measure of overall mouse quality.

What should you check before choosing a wireless mouse?
Compare the connection mode, whether a receiver is required, battery and charging arrangements, and available polling-rate settings. Those details affect how you connect and maintain the mouse as well as which features are practical for your use.

How many buttons do you need?
Choose button count and placement around the games and tasks you actually play. Extra programmable controls may be useful if you have specific actions you want at hand, but there is no universal button count for a genre. Check whether the buttons are reachable without changing your grip and whether the model’s software or onboard configuration supports the setup you want. Logitech G lists programmable buttons among the features to consider in its guide.
How to compare two gaming mice
Use the exact model and variant when checking specifications. A practical comparison should cover:
- Fit: hand comfort, grip, dimensions, contour, handedness, and button placement.
- Control: weight, sensor, practical sensitivity range, and supported polling options.
- Clicks: switch type and the feel of the specific model.
- Connection: wired or wireless modes, receiver requirements, battery, and charging.
- Setup: programmable controls, software, and onboard configuration options.
Separate stated specifications from performance claims, and do not infer a universal winner from a maximum DPI or polling figure. Model generations and specifications change, so confirm the details for the version you are buying.
