Choose a frontier AI model by testing it on work you actually do—not by picking the highest leaderboard score. Compare task quality, tool use, speed, total workflow cost, context needs, access and stability, and data handling. The best fit for a codebase agent may not be the best editor, researcher, or everyday assistant.

How to compare frontier AI models fairly
Start by choosing candidates you can access in the mode you intend to use: a consumer app, developer API, or cloud service. These are not interchangeable. A benchmark run through an API or research environment may use different tools and settings from a consumer chat product.
Give each candidate the same instructions and inputs, and evaluate several realistic tasks rather than one impressive demo. Include the tools, files, browsing, code execution, or computer-use features your actual workflow requires. Record the time to a usable result, not just time to the first response.

- Define the workload. Pick representative tasks you do repeatedly, plus at least one task where a mistake would be costly.
- Run the same tasks. Keep prompts, source material, tool access, and success criteria consistent across models.
- Score useful outcomes. Track task success, correctness, instruction-following, human correction, completion time, and cost, including retries and tool calls.
- Check practical constraints. Confirm the required plan or API access, context and input types, privacy terms, and whether the model endpoint is stable or preview.
- Choose for your actual trade-off. If candidates are close, prioritize your most frequent task and the failure that would cost you most.
This is a practical comparison method, not a vendor-certified test. Provider benchmarks are evidence about particular tasks and setups, not a universal ranking. OpenAI says some reported scores use maximum effort and research or API environments that may differ from production ChatGPT; Anthropic documents benchmark-version changes, safeguards, and test-specific conditions. See the providers’ GPT-6 Astra results and methodology, Claude Fable 5.1 details, and Claude Opus 5.5 benchmark notes.
Which AI model is best for coding?
There is no evidence here for one best model across every codebase or coding job. Test the work you need the model to do, in a repository you can inspect. A useful comparison set is a bug fix, a feature request, and a code review. Check whether the changes work, respect project conventions, explain risks, and avoid unrelated edits. If you rely on an agent, test the complete tool-using workflow rather than judging only the model’s code suggestions.
OpenAI’s 2026 GPT-6 Astra page reports vendor-published scores of 59.3% on Agents’ Last Exam, 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, and 74.1% on DeepSWE v1.1. OpenAI describes these as maximum scores at any effort and cautions that API or research-environment outputs may differ from production ChatGPT. These results can help identify tasks worth investigating, but they do not establish that Astra will perform best in your repository.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOpenAI describes GPT-5.6 as a three-tier family: Sol as its flagship, Terra as a balanced lower-cost tier, and Luna as the fastest and most affordable tier. Those are OpenAI’s positioning claims; test the relevant tier on your own coding workflow before choosing it.
Which model should I use for writing?
Compare models on a draft, a revision with explicit style and format constraints, and a fact-preservation task. Check whether the model follows the requested voice, makes only the changes you asked for, and preserves names, figures, qualifications, and meaning through multiple edits. A polished first draft is not enough if later revisions silently change facts.

For long documents, test the amount and type of material you need to provide, including whether the model can work with your files or other relevant inputs. Measure the final human editing required. Provider descriptions of “knowledge work” or “long context” are starting points for a trial, not a substitute for checking the output against the source.
Which model should I use for research?
Give each candidate the same research question and require a source list plus a mapping from individual claims to supporting sources. Spot-check the links and the claims themselves: a plausible summary can still misstate what a source says. If browsing is essential, include it in the test and note whether the model actually used sources rather than relying on an unsupported answer.

Benchmarks also have boundaries. OpenAI’s FrontierScience description explains that its expert-written science questions are constrained tests, not a full representation of scientific work involving novel hypotheses, multiple modalities, or real experimental systems. OpenAI reported that GPT-5.2 scored 77% on the Olympiad track and 25% on the Research track in its initial tests; those are older benchmark results, not a current ranking of frontier models.
Even a strong benchmark result does not remove the need to verify important calculations, reasoning, and factual claims. For research that affects a consequential decision, retain the sources and check the model’s interpretation yourself.
How do I compare models for everyday work?
Use ordinary tasks that resemble your routine: summarizing a document, extracting action items, drafting a reply, or completing a multi-step browser or computer workflow if you need one. Check whether the model understands the task, uses the available tools correctly, and finishes with less effort than your current method.

Do not assume a model that excels at coding or a constrained benchmark will be the most convenient daily assistant. For everyday use, access through your preferred app, response speed, file and tool support, and the amount of correction needed may matter more than a narrow benchmark score.
Compare cost, speed, context, access, and privacy
Model quality is only one part of the decision. Compare the full workflow, especially when a task needs repeated prompts, long inputs, tool calls, or human review.
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Task quality | Success, correctness, instruction-following, and how much correction the result needs on your real tasks. |
| Tools | Whether you need browsing, code execution, files, computer use, or multi-step agents—and how reliably the system uses them. |
| Cost | Consumer-plan cost or API input, output, and cache rates, plus retries and review time. Token rates and subscriptions use different billing units. |
| Speed | Time to the first useful response and total time to finish a multi-step task. |
| Context and modality | Whether it handles the relevant codebase, long documents, images, charts, or other inputs in your workflow. |
| Access and stability | Availability for your region and plan, and whether an API model is stable, preview, or a moving “latest” alias. |
| Privacy and safeguards | Retention terms, enterprise controls, organizational requirements, and whether safeguards may restrict or route certain requests. |
As dated API examples, Anthropic listed Claude Fable 5.1 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, and Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, on the respective official pages checked October 5, 2026. These are provider-listed rates in US dollars per million tokens, not consumer subscription prices; cache and fast-mode pricing may differ, and rates can change. See Fable 5.1 pricing and terms and Opus 5.5 pricing and benchmark conditions.
For data handling, check the terms for the exact product and plan before submitting sensitive material. Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 page states that 30-day retention for safety monitoring applies by default, with specific provisions for qualifying enterprise arrangements. It also says flagged cybersecurity or biology requests may be rerouted to less capable models, without charging Fable prices for those rerouted requests. Do not generalize these details to other Anthropic products or plans.
Check model status before relying on an endpoint
For software integrations, lifecycle status affects maintenance risk. Google’s API catalog, last updated October 1, 2026, lists Gemini 3.8 Flash as stable and describes it as intended for long-horizon software engineering, autonomous agents, and complex enterprise workflows. The same catalog lists Gemini 3.1 Pro as preview; Google says preview versions can have tighter rate limits and may be deprecated with at least two weeks’ notice. “Latest” aliases can move to newer releases. These catalog descriptions explain positioning and lifecycle, not a same-conditions independent ranking against other providers. Check the Gemini API model catalog for current status before deployment.
Make the final choice based on your failure costs
Use your test results to choose the model that delivers the most reliable useful work for the tasks you value, within your time, cost, access, and data constraints. A slightly stronger result may not be worth a slower workflow or higher review burden; a lower-cost option may be a poor fit if it needs repeated retries. For confidential or regulated work, verify current provider terms and your organization’s rules at decision time. Treat model names, prices, endpoint status, and regional access as changeable rather than permanent facts.
