Choose your first drone by the flying skill you want to practice, not by camera specs alone. A conventional controller-based camera drone such as the DJI Mini 4K suits learners who want to develop piloting skills and take aerial photos or video. The DJI Neo is a different fit if you mainly want palm-operated, automated close-range filming with fully enclosed propellers. Neither product description proves a drone is safest or easiest to fly; both still require a suitable location and compliance with local rules.
Decide what you want to learn
Conventional controller flying
If you want to practice steering a drone with a conventional controller, including outdoor piloting, look for a camera drone intended for that style of flight. The DJI Mini 4K is one example: DJI publishes beginner guidance and camera-drone features, making it more relevant to this goal than a model centered on automated palm operation. This is a feature-based comparison, not a hands-on verdict.

Automated close-range filming
If your priority is quick personal footage and simple close-range operation, the DJI Neo offers palm takeoff and landing, multiple control methods, and fully enclosed propeller guards, according to DJI. That convenience should not be confused with learning the same controller skills as flying a conventional camera drone.

A guard can help protect propellers, but it does not make every room or obstacle-rich area appropriate for flight, nor does it prove injury prevention. Choose a safe practice area and follow the product instructions.

Check U.S. requirements before flying
The following applies to recreational flying under U.S. Federal Aviation Administration guidance; rules elsewhere differ. For U.S. recreational flight under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations, pass TRUST before flying and carry proof of passage. The FAA says, “If you fly your drone recreationally under the Exception for Recreational Flyers, you must pass the test before you fly.” FAA-approved test administrators offer TRUST free of charge. FAA TRUST guidance, updated August 21, 2026.
Registration and Remote ID
The FAA says recreational drones weighing 0.55 pounds (250 g) or less may qualify for a limited registration exception. It also says drones that must be registered, or that are registered, must comply with Remote ID. Do not treat a weight below 250 g as a blanket exemption: consider whether the operation is recreational or under Part 107, whether the aircraft must or has been registered, and which Remote ID requirements apply. Airspace authorization
Recreational pilots need FAA authorization before flying in controlled airspace. Depending on the circumstances, authorization is obtained through LAANC or DroneZone. Check the location before each planned flight and secure any required authorization. FAA airspace authorization guidance.

- Choose the Mini 4K path if practicing conventional controller inputs and aerial camera flying is the main goal.
- Choose the Neo path if palm operation, enclosed guards, and automated close-range filming matter more than practicing conventional controller skills.
