1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSize a home backup system in two separate steps: calculate the usable battery energy needed to run your selected loads for the outage, then choose an inverter with enough continuous power for the loads that may run together and enough surge output to start motors or compressors. A monthly electricity bill cannot tell you either figure reliably. The right size depends on your appliances, outage target, battery specifications, solar conditions, and installation location.
Power and energy answer different sizing questions
Inverter output is a power rating, usually watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). It tells you how much load the inverter can supply at one time. Battery capacity is an energy rating, usually watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). It helps determine how long selected loads can run.

That distinction matters in both directions: a battery with ample kWh may not start an appliance if the inverter cannot handle its startup demand, while a high-output inverter cannot provide long runtime if the battery has little usable energy. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains the difference between power capacity and energy capacity in its Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics.
How many kWh of battery do you need for a power cut?
Start with the appliances or circuits you need to keep running—not an assumption that the whole home runs as usual. For each load, estimate its power and the hours you expect to use it during the outage. The result is a first-pass energy estimate, before accounting for conversion losses and battery discharge limits.

1. List critical loads and expected use
Record each appliance or circuit, its rated or measured watts, and its expected hours of operation during the outage. Use appliance labels or manufacturer specifications where available; measured power can help when a device’s actual draw differs from its rating. Estimate realistic use rather than treating every appliance as continuously on.
2. Calculate the energy requirement
For each load, multiply watts by expected hours to get watt-hours. Add the results, then divide by 1,000 to convert watt-hours to kilowatt-hours:
Estimated load energy (kWh) = sum of [load power (W) × expected operating hours] ÷ 1,000

This is energy consumed by the selected loads, not the battery’s required advertised capacity. For example, a 100 W load used for 5 hours consumes 500 Wh, or 0.5 kWh. Apply the same calculation to each item in your own list and add the totals.
3. Adjust for usable battery energy and losses
Do not assume the battery’s nominal capacity is fully available to loads. Check the battery manufacturer’s permitted depth of discharge and the inverter or conversion losses, then select a battery whose usable energy covers the calculated requirement. Battery chemistry and product specifications govern the adjustment. DOE’s older residential fact sheet notes that lead-acid batteries cannot be fully discharged; it is useful for the basic sizing method, not a substitute for current product manuals: Battery Power for Your Residential Solar Electric System.
The same fact sheet gives a rounded illustration: 1,000 Wh (1 kWh) per day on a 24 V battery bank corresponds to 42 amp-hours of useful storage. That example is not a complete battery recommendation because discharge limits and system losses still have to be considered.

What size inverter do you need for your home?
Choose inverter output based on the loads that could operate simultaneously, not on the battery’s kWh rating. Add the operating watts of those concurrent loads and check that the inverter’s continuous output can support the combined demand. Then check its surge rating against the startup requirements of appliances with motors or compressors, such as some pumps and refrigerators.
There is no universal surge multiplier established by the cited guidance. Use the appliance nameplate and manufacturer specifications, and compare them with the inverter’s continuous and surge ratings. A system can have enough stored energy for an appliance yet still fail to start it if the inverter’s output is inadequate.
Check battery and inverter compatibility
Confirm that the battery and inverter match in DC input voltage and are listed or approved by their manufacturers for use together. DOE’s residential fact sheet describes 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V battery strings as options whose suitability depends on inverter input, battery type, and required storage. Do not choose a voltage based on that list alone; follow the specifications for the actual equipment.

When comparing systems, consider continuous and surge inverter output, usable battery kWh and permitted discharge, battery chemistry and voltage, compatibility, and the circuits the system will back up. Also check how the system transfers to backup or isolates from the grid during an outage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long will a home battery last during an outage?
Runtime depends on the energy available when the outage begins, the critical loads and how they are used, and any solar energy available while the grid is down. A simple planning estimate is usable battery energy divided by the loads’ average power, but it is only an estimate: real consumption changes with appliance cycles, conversion losses, and solar conditions.
DOE and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) state that the hours a PV-and-storage system can power critical loads depend on stored energy at outage start, critical-load level, and PV availability. Their report modeled outages of approximately two hours and simulated 8,760 outage start times—one at each hour of the year. Those are study conditions, not a prediction of how long a particular household’s outage will last. See Valuing the Resilience Provided by Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems.

Will solar panels work when the grid goes down?
Not necessarily. A conventional grid-tied solar array generally shuts down when the grid is lost; operating during an outage requires an appropriate inverter configuration and storage system. DOE puts it plainly: “For solar panels to produce power on their own, they need two things: a properly configured inverter and a storage system.” See Solar and Resilience Basics.
If solar is expected to contribute or recharge the battery during an outage, estimate production for your location and the relevant season and time of day. Weather, shading, and daylight timing affect the energy available, so do not count on the array’s nameplate output as a guaranteed daily contribution. DOE’s 2024 guide demonstrates a workflow combining hourly meter data with location-specific PVWatts estimates: Creating Energy – Resilient Tribal Facilities with Distributed Energy Resources. Its HomeGrid 8-stack example is 38.4 kWh and discusses 3-hour and 8-hour outage scenarios; these are project-specific illustrations, not recommended sizes for a home.
Plan whole-home backup as an installation, not just a battery purchase
Backing up selected circuits and backing up an entire home are different system designs. A whole-home setup may require checks of electrical-panel capacity, wiring, inverter and transfer or islanding capability, utility requirements, and local building, fire, and electrical rules. Requirements vary by location, so have the proposed design reviewed by a qualified local solar-and-storage installer or licensed electrical contractor.
