Choose for the console and fighting game you actually use, then pick the input style that feels right: a familiar gamepad or fight pad, a traditional stick with a lever, or a leverless controller with directional buttons. A fight stick is a layout choice, not a required upgrade. Before buying, verify the exact model’s compatibility with your platform and, where relevant, the specific game.
Start with your platform and game
Write down the system you play on and the exact fighting-game version before comparing controllers. Compatibility is model-specific: for example, HORI lists a Fighting Stick α for PlayStation and Windows separately from an Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One version. A similar product name does not mean the Xbox model will work on PlayStation, or vice versa. Check the manufacturer page for the precise model and supported platform: HORI Fighting Stick α for PlayStation 5 and HORI Fighting Stick α for Xbox Series X|S.

Compatibility can also depend on game type. Brook says its Wingman FGC supports PS5 fighting games, but on PS4 and PC X-Input it supports games of all types. Brook also says only controllers on its official compatibility list are guaranteed. Check both the intended game and the exact controller before relying on an adapter: Brook Wingman FGC product page and Brook official compatibility list.

Gamepad or fight pad
A standard gamepad or fight pad is a sensible choice if handheld controls are already comfortable, you want something easy to store, or you also play genres beyond fighting games. Check the D-pad and button arrangement against your own preferences and the games you play. The cited manufacturer pages do not provide independent comparative D-pad tests, so there is no evidence here to rank one pad layout over another.

Lever arcade stick
A traditional arcade stick pairs a lever for directions with a broad button surface. Consider it if that physical arrangement appeals to you, not because a lever is established as inherently faster or better. HORI describes the PlayStation/Windows Fighting Stick α as having a HAYABUSA lever and buttons; its product page also notes replaceable artwork, accessible parts, and four custom profiles. Those features may matter if you want to personalize or service the controller. See the PlayStation/Windows model details.
Leverless, all-button controller
A leverless controller uses buttons for directional inputs. Whether its layout feels comfortable is a personal fit question; the available manufacturer documentation does not compare its performance with a lever stick or gamepad. HORI’s Japan-market NOLVA Mechanical All-Button Arcade Controller is a documented PS5 and Windows PC example. Its page lists multiple Street Fighter 6 character design variants and a tax-inclusive price in yen; that listing is specific to Japan and should not be treated as a current US price.

Compare the practical trade-offs
| Option | What it offers | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Gamepad or fight pad | Familiar handheld controls, easy storage, and potential use beyond fighting games. | Whether the D-pad and button layout suit you, and whether the exact device works with your platform and game. |
| Lever arcade stick | A lever for directions and a large button surface; some models offer customization and accessible parts. | Exact platform version, physical fit, size, and whether replaceable artwork or profiles matter to you. |
| Leverless all-button controller | Directional inputs handled with buttons rather than a lever. | Whether the layout and ergonomics suit you, plus exact platform compatibility. |
| Converter | May let a supported wired controller work in a particular platform and game use case. | Supported game type and exact controller model on the maker’s official list; do not assume universal console support. |
| DIY fighting board | A component for assembling or upgrading a custom controller. | Board platform support, installation requirements, and whether the completed build is supported in your intended game. |
Price, portability, repairability, and use outside fighting games can change which option makes sense. No independent performance testing in the cited sources establishes a universal winner among gamepads, lever sticks, and leverless controllers.

When an adapter or DIY board makes sense
Converter for a controller you already own
Brook describes Wingman FGC as a wired converter for PS5 fighting games, PS4 games of all types, and PC X-Input games of all types. The PS5 fighting-game limitation matters: do not treat it as an adapter for every PS5 game. Brook’s guarantee also applies only to controllers included in its official compatibility list. Review the product information and supported-controller list for the exact combination you intend to use.

Board for a custom build
Brook describes its Gen-5X Series Fighting Board as a component for custom controller builds, listing support for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC. Its terminal blocks avoid soldering, according to the Gen-5X product page. That board specification is not proof that every finished custom controller will work in every game. The page also notes a Bluetooth-setting caveat for the Gen-5X MINI; do not apply that specific caveat to every Gen-5X board.
Run these checks before buying
- Identify your setup. Note the console or PC and the exact fighting-game version you play.
- Match the hardware version. Read the manufacturer’s page for the exact controller model and platform. For instance, HORI documents distinct PlayStation/Windows and Xbox Fighting Stick α variants.
- Verify adapters narrowly. Check the target game type and exact controller model against the adapter maker’s official compatibility list. For Wingman FGC, Brook limits PS5 use to fighting games and guarantees only listed controllers.
- Check custom-build requirements. Confirm the board’s platform support and installation details. Brook’s Bluetooth-setting note applies to the Gen-5X MINI specifically.
- Check the seller for current price and availability. Manufacturer catalog prices and regional listings can change and may not reflect the price where you live.
Product examples and listed prices
HORI’s US catalog displayed the PlayStation and Xbox Fighting Stick α variants at $219.99, and Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 editions at $229.99, when accessed. These are catalog snapshots, not guaranteed current street prices or universal prices. HORI Japan displayed the NOLVA at 19,980 yen including tax on its Japan-market page; that figure is specific to that listing. Confirm current availability and price with the relevant manufacturer or seller.
