How to Choose a Fanless PC Case and Heatsink

A fanless PC case and heatsink work as one cooling system. Match them to your exact CPU, board, workload and airflow path before buying.

Choose a fanless PC case and heatsink as one cooling system, matched to your exact processor, motherboard and workload—not by a single TDP number. Start with the CPU’s real use, confirm the manufacturer’s compatibility and mounting requirements, then check that the case can move heat through natural convection and keep nearby components cool.

Start with the workload, not the TDP label

Write down the exact processor and what it will do. Light or intermittent tasks leave a passive heatsink time to shed heat; sustained heavy workloads keep adding heat and are a tougher fit. Noctua’s guidance for its NH-P1 says passive cooling works best with mixed, non-continuous workloads that allow cooling intervals. That is guidance for the NH-P1 setup, not a guarantee for every CPU or case. See Noctua’s NH-P1 setup guidelines.

Do not treat CPU TDP as a universal pass/fail threshold. A cooler’s practical capacity depends on the specific CPU, case, ambient temperature and other components. Read any manufacturer power-support figure as a product-specific specification with its stated configuration, not as a promise that every processor at or below that number will remain cool without throttling. Noctua describes these dependencies on its NH-P1 product page.

Choose the cooling design

A passive heatsink inside the case

A CPU-mounted passive cooler such as Noctua’s NH-P1 dissipates heat through its fins and depends on the enclosure and surrounding air to carry that heat away. The NH-P1 has six heatpipes and widely spaced fins; Noctua says it needs good natural convection for full performance. A sufficiently open case or optional fans may be part of the intended setup, so “passive cooler” does not automatically mean the entire build needs no airflow under all conditions. Check the cooler maker’s full guidance for the intended configuration.

A case that transfers CPU heat to its chassis

Some fanless cases use a specified mounting system or thermal interface to conduct CPU heat into the enclosure. In that design, the board, mounting hardware and thermal contact are part of the heat path. A board that physically fits is not necessarily compatible: follow the case maker’s supported-board list and installation instructions. Do not assume a metal case can passively cool a CPU just because it is metal.

Akasa’s Euler CMX is one example of this category: its manufacturer describes it as an aluminum fanless Mini-ITX case, lists processor support up to 35 W TDP for specified compatible configurations, and says included heatsink and thermal pads cool M.2 2280 SSDs. Those details apply to the CMX’s listed compatibility, not to fanless cases generally. See Akasa’s Euler CMX announcement.

Verify compatibility before buying

Use the exact case and cooler documentation, not just broad product-category labels. Check each of these items against the manufacturers’ specifications:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Motherboard: form factor, exact model where the case requires a supported-board list, and CPU socket.
  • CPU and mounting: socket support, required brackets or spring-mount hardware, and the case’s stated processor support. For a chassis-conduction design, confirm the intended thermal contact and interface.
  • Clearance: cooler height and orientation, RAM height and position, expansion-card space, and any obstruction to the heatsink or case fins.
  • Power supply and other hardware: supported power-supply format and fit for storage, cables and components that may block airflow or thermal contact.
  • Thermal accessories: required pads, heatsinks or other parts, including any case-supplied pieces that serve a specific component.

Noctua’s NH-P1 case compatibility list identifies cases with sufficient clearance for that cooler; it is not a universal list of passive-case compatibility. Akasa’s compact cooling guide also advises checking socket compatibility, CPU power support and case cooler-height clearance.

Check convection and the components around the CPU

Natural convection needs a clear route for warm air to rise and cooler air to replace it. Check the case maker’s required orientation and leave the exposed fins and vents unobstructed. A tightly enclosed shelf, blocked vent or position that conflicts with the product’s intended orientation can undermine a passive design. Noctua specifically calls for good natural convection for full NH-P1 performance.

Also assess motherboard voltage-regulator modules (VRMs), storage and power components. A CPU cooler’s fan would normally move some air over nearby parts; in a fanless build that incidental airflow is absent. Noctua warns that weakly heatsinked VRMs may overheat and throttle even if CPU temperature appears reasonable. A CPU temperature reading alone therefore cannot establish that the whole system is operating within safe limits.

Compare candidate builds on the same criteria

When several configurations appear compatible, compare the same attributes rather than treating unlike vendor figures as a benchmark:

Unless manufacturers use a shared test method, their stated limits are not directly comparable thermal results. The product examples below are illustrations of different designs, not a ranking; current price, retailer availability and independent comparative thermal performance are not established here.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Identify the CPU and workload. Decide whether typical use is light or intermittent, or whether it includes long, sustained high-load work.
  2. Pick the heat-transfer approach. Choose between a CPU-mounted passive heatsink relying on enclosure convection and a case designed to conduct CPU heat into its chassis.
  3. Confirm exact fit and support. Match the motherboard form factor and socket, processor support, mounting hardware, cooler and RAM clearance, and required case accessories to manufacturer documentation.
  4. Validate the heat path. Check orientation, fin exposure and vent clearance; for a chassis-conduction system, confirm the intended board contact and thermal interface.
  5. Review the whole board. Check whether VRMs, SSDs and power components have adequate cooling without CPU-fan airflow.
  6. Reconsider if the use case conflicts. If the workload is continuously demanding, the case location blocks convection, or a required compatibility detail is unsupported, choose a different configuration rather than relying on TDP alone.
