There is no single best face toner for everyone, and toner is an optional step—not a requirement for healthy or glowing skin. If your cleanser, moisturizer and sun protection are working for you, you do not need to add one. If you want extra hydration or help with a specific concern, choose a formula by its ingredients and how well your skin tolerates it.
What does toner do for your face?
Toner is usually a water-based product applied after cleansing and before moisturizer. Depending on its formula, it may add hydration or deliver exfoliating ingredients aimed at concerns such as dullness, uneven texture or clogged pores. Toners vary widely, so the word “toner” alone does not tell you what a product will do.

Modern formulas are not necessarily the drying, alcohol-heavy astringents many people remember. Cleveland Clinic quotes dermatology resident Angela Wei, MD: “Unlike old-school toners that had high alcohol content designed to remove oil on the skin and were often drying and irritating, modern-day toners are much more moisturizing and soothing.” Still, check the ingredient list rather than assuming every toner is gentle or hydrating. Wei advises: “First, look to see if there’s any alcohol used and if so, how much.” Cleveland Clinic, September 16, 2025

How to choose a toner by skin concern
Dryness or tightness: look for humectants
Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants that help attract water. They are useful ingredients to look for when hydration is your goal. A toner is still only one optional layer; follow it with moisturizer if that is part of your routine.
#1 Best Overall
- [HYALURONIC ACID & NIACINAMIDE TONER] pH balanced toner gently removes impurities after cleansing. With ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide the lightweight toner helps soften and smooth skin while locking in moisture for refreshed, healthy-looking skin.
- [ WITHOUT ALCOHOL] The alcohol free, non-astringent, and non-drying, formula leaves skin feeling balanced, soothed, soft, and clean.
- [ SENSITIVE SKIN TESTED & NON-GREASY FEEL ] Formulated with sensitive skin in mind, the hydrating and soothing formula is fragrance-free, oil-free, allergy-tested, sensitive skin-tested, and non-comedogenic so it will not clog your pores.
- [ 3 ESSENTIAL CERAMIDES ] Ceramides are found naturally in the skin and make up 50% of the lipids in the skin barrier. All CeraVe products are formulated with three essential ceramides (1, 3, 6-II) to help restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier.
- [ DERMATOLOGIST RECOMMENDED ] CeraVe Skincare is developed with dermatologists and has products suitable for dry skin, sensitive skin, oily skin, acne-prone, and more.
Clogged pores or uneven texture: consider exfoliating acids
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic or lactic acid, and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid, can exfoliate and may help smooth texture or unclog pores. They can also irritate, especially if your skin is sensitive or you are already using other active products. Consider the acid, its strength and what else is in your routine before choosing an exfoliating toner.
These acids may make pores look somewhat smaller by improving texture, but pore size is largely genetic and actual pore size is difficult to reduce. A toner cannot permanently shrink pores. Cleveland Clinic

Sensitive skin: favor simplicity and introduce products cautiously
Heavily fragranced formulas and strong actives may be harder to tolerate. A simpler, fragrance-free formula may be a more cautious starting point, though no ingredient guarantees that a product will suit everyone. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends testing a new skin-care product on a small area twice daily for seven to 10 days before using it more broadly. Stop if a reaction develops; seek medical care for a severe reaction. AAD: How to test skin care products
Rosacea: skip toner unless your dermatologist advises otherwise
The AAD advises people with rosacea: “Never use an astringent or toner.” If you have rosacea, or use prescription skin treatment, ask your dermatologist before adding products to your routine. AAD rosacea skin-care guidance

How to add toner to your routine
- Check whether you need the step. Keep your existing routine if it is working. Toner is optional, not a substitute for cleanser, moisturizer or sun protection. Cleveland Clinic’s simple skin-care routine guide
- Match the formula to your goal. Choose a hydrating formula for hydration or an acid-containing formula if exfoliation is appropriate for your skin. Check fragrance, alcohol and other active ingredients, as well as products you already use.
- Test it first. Apply the product to a small area twice daily for seven to 10 days, following AAD guidance. Do not proceed to regular use if your skin reacts.
- Start irritating actives slowly. Cleveland Clinic recommends starting strong acids or potentially irritating active formulas every other day and increasing use only if tolerated. There is no universal toner schedule; your skin’s response matters.
- Use it after cleansing and before moisturizer. Follow the product’s directions, and stop if irritation develops. If you are under a dermatologist’s care, check whether the toner fits your treatment plan.
How long might results take?
Cleveland Clinic gives six weeks to three months as a general estimate for seeing an effect from toner, not a guarantee or a result from a product-specific trial. It says acne or hyperpigmentation improvements may take about two to three months; treat that as an estimate, not a promise. A toner cannot guarantee clear or glowing skin, and the evidence cited here does not establish a universal result for any particular formula.
