A drill press mortising attachment can cut square mortises, but only when it fits the press and uses a matched chisel-and-bit set. Start by checking your drill press model and quill diameter against the attachment maker’s current compatibility information; chuck capacity alone does not prove a fit. Then compare included tooling and adjustments among the attachments that are confirmed to work with your machine.
What a drill press mortising attachment does
A hollow-chisel attachment holds a square chisel around a rotating, auger-style bit. The bit removes most of the wood, while the chisel edges form the square sides of the mortise. Grizzly describes its attachment as enabling square mortises to be cut in wood stock with a drill press and a matched mortising chisel and bit (Grizzly manual). In ShopSmith’s system, the attachment holds the chisel while the drill chuck drives the bit.

This explains the tool’s purpose, not whether it is safe or convenient on every drill press. Fit and the manufacturer’s setup instructions determine whether a particular combination is appropriate.
Check compatibility before comparing models
Identify the exact make and model of your drill press, then check its quill diameter and the attachment’s specified fit. Compare those details with the attachment maker’s current compatibility list and any supplied bushings. A chuck’s capacity is not a substitute for checking the quill or the manufacturer’s fit requirements.

Compatibility lists differ. Grizzly H7789 has a model-specific list that excludes some small and radial presses, while the Delta 17-924/17-935 manual listing names a different set of drill press models. Neither list establishes fit for another brand or model. Check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact press and attachment before buying; a historical listing is not proof of current support.
Compare the options only after your press passes the fit check
The available material identifies several attachment families, but it does not establish a current, apples-to-apples performance ranking. Treat these as leads to verify against each manufacturer’s documentation, not as a universal “best” list.

The chisel holder, hollow chisel, and auger-style bit need to work together. Confirm that the chisel and bit are intended for the chosen attachment and that any replacement set has the right holder and shank fit. Do not assume that sets interchange between brands or attachment models.

Common kit sizes identified in the secondary guide are 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch, but packages differ. ShopSmith’s 555810 page lists 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch. Read the actual package contents rather than assuming a size is included. Lee Valley is identified as a source of replacement chisels and bits, but verify exact holder and shank compatibility before ordering.

- Alignment adjustment: Check how the attachment positions the chisel relative to the bit and what adjustments the maker provides.
- Hold-down and support: Confirm whether a hold-down is included and how the workpiece is secured. ShopSmith’s listed package includes a hold-down; do not assume other packages do.
- Replacement tooling: Check that compatible replacement chisels and bits are available for the attachment’s holder and shank.
- Setup instructions: Follow the exact manual for assembling and positioning the chisel and bit. Instructions and recommended speeds vary by model.
One secondary guide reports setting the auger slightly proud of the chisel points, but that should not override the instructions for your specific attachment and tooling. The available manuals do not support one speed recommendation for every setup.

Decide whether an attachment is the right equipment class
A drill press attachment is a way to add mortising capability to a compatible drill press; it is not the same machine category as a dedicated benchtop mortiser. If your drill press is not on the attachment maker’s fit list, or the required tooling and support are not available, do not force the combination. Consider whether a dedicated mortiser better matches the work and budget, then evaluate that machine category on its own merits.
