There is no universally best DNS resolver for every home. A popular Reddit recommendation may work well for one person and be a poor fit for your ISP, location, privacy expectations, or filtering needs. Compare the resolver’s data practices and behavior, then test it on your own connection instead of treating an online ranking as a verdict.
What changing DNS does—and what it does not do
DNS translates a domain name, such as a website address, into the network address a device needs to connect. When a device uses a recursive resolver, that resolver receives its DNS queries. Its collection and retention practices therefore matter to privacy; RFC 9076 explains both the resolver’s visibility into DNS traffic and the privacy implications of concentrating resolution among a small number of operators: RFC 9076.

Changing DNS does not make all of your internet activity private. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypts the connection between a compatible device and its chosen resolver. The resolver still processes the queries, and this encryption does not encrypt all browsing activity. Cloudflare describes these transport options and their setup in its encrypted DNS guidance.
Compare resolvers on the things that matter to you
Cloudflare, Google Public DNS, Quad9, your ISP’s resolver, and other options should be compared across separate dimensions. A strong result on one does not automatically mean a strong result on the others.

Privacy and data handling
Check what query or client data the provider says it collects, how long it keeps that data, whether it is shared, and whether an independent audit supports the claims. A published policy is a provider’s stated commitment, not by itself independent proof of practice.
For example, Cloudflare’s documentation says it deletes limited Public Resolver Logs within 25 hours, truncates client IP addresses and deletes the truncated address within 25 hours. It also describes sampled packets, aggregated data that may be kept indefinitely, and limited anonymized data access for APNIC research. Those are Cloudflare’s stated practices, not a guarantee about other resolvers: Cloudflare’s resolver privacy documentation. Google says its service temporarily collects limited information for service improvement and security; its Public DNS FAQ explains its stated practices and notes that operating systems can handle DNS settings differently.

Reliability and reachability
A resolver must work consistently from your ISP and location. A service’s reputation or availability elsewhere does not establish how reliably it will work on your connection. Google also states that free Google Public DNS has no service-level agreement (SLA) in its FAQ.

DNS lookup latency is only one part of loading a site or using an app. Results can vary with location, network conditions, cache behavior, and the content delivery network (CDN) address returned by a resolver. A 2025 study comparing public resolvers and CDNs found that lookup latency and the latency implications of CDN edge selection are distinct, with results varying across resolver/CDN combinations. It is evidence against a universal speed ranking, not a benchmark for your home: Public DNS Resolvers Meet Content Delivery Networks: A Performance Assessment of the Interplay.
Rank #3

Google likewise advises considering speed, reliability, security, and response validity together, and notes that location and resolver behavior matter in its Public DNS FAQ. Test DNS responses and ordinary browsing or app use on your own connection rather than assuming a low lookup time guarantees a faster overall experience.
Security and filtering
Check whether the resolver validates DNSSEC, and decide whether you want filtering. Some resolvers provide no content filtering; others block malware domains or add family-oriented filtering. For instance, Cloudflare says its standard 1.1.1.1 resolver does not filter content, while its 1.1.1.1 for Families options include malware blocking and an optional adult-content block. Configuration differs by IPv4, IPv6, DoH, and DoT, so consult the current setup documentation before using a particular variant. Consider how you would handle a false positive if a site or service you need is blocked.

Encrypted transport
DoH or DoT can protect queries from observation on the path between your device and the resolver, provided your router or device supports and uses that protocol. It does not remove the need to trust the provider receiving the queries. Cloudflare’s setup guidance describes DoH and DoT; Google’s FAQ discusses DoH and DNSSEC.
Choose according to your priorities
- Keep your ISP’s resolver if it is reliable for you and its practices and behavior meet your needs. Switching is not automatically an upgrade.
- Try a public resolver if you want a different published privacy policy, security behavior, filtering choice, or reliability on your connection. Evaluate those properties separately.
- Choose encrypted DNS when practical if your router or the relevant devices support DoH or DoT and you want to protect the path from device to resolver.
- Select filtering deliberately: use a plain resolver if you do not want content filtering, or a documented filtering option if you want malware or family filtering. Confirm the exact resolver address and behavior before configuring it.
Do not treat an upvoted recommendation as proof that a resolver is best for your home. A Reddit discussion asking which of several named resolvers users prefer is only an example of that kind of question, not representative survey evidence: Reddit discussion.

Test candidates on your own connection
- Write down what you want to improve. Decide whether your priority is privacy policy, consistent reachability, lower DNS lookup time, better browsing or app performance, DNSSEC, filtering, or encrypted transport. These goals are not interchangeable.
- Choose a small set of candidates. Include your current ISP resolver as a baseline and compare it with public resolvers that offer the privacy, filtering, or transport properties you want. Confirm the current configuration instructions on each provider’s official documentation.
- Change one setting at a time. Use the router’s DNS setting for a network-wide trial, if supported, or configure a single device to limit the test. Note the previous setting so you can restore it.
- Check DNS and normal use. Observe whether lookups resolve consistently, then use the sites, apps, and services you actually rely on. A DNS latency result alone cannot show whether a resolver’s CDN mapping improves your real-world experience.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Network load, location, and cache state can affect results. Treat a brief test as evidence about your connection at that time, not a permanent universal ranking.
- Keep the option that fits your priorities. If a candidate causes resolution failures, unwanted blocks, or worse ordinary use, switch back or test another. There is no need to keep a change that does not help.
Set DNS on the router or on individual devices
Router configuration can apply a DNS choice across the home network, depending on the router and whether devices or applications override system DNS. Device-level configuration targets an individual phone, computer, or other supported device and can be useful for a limited trial. Menus and available protocols differ by model and operating system; use the instructions for your equipment rather than assuming one universal menu path. Cloudflare provides separate guidance for router setup and device setup.
Be cautious about entering different providers as primary and secondary DNS when they have different filtering or DNSSEC behavior. Operating systems and clients vary: some prefer the primary and use the secondary only if it fails, while others may round-robin. Google warns that mixing resolvers with different security or filtering behavior can weaken effective filtering or DNSSEC behavior in its Public DNS FAQ.
