There is no single best digital amplifier for every listener. In consumer audio, “digital amplifier” often means a Class D amplifier, but Class D describes how the output stage works—not whether the amplifier accepts digital audio. Choose by matching the amplifier’s topology, power and connections to your speakers and sources, rather than treating “digital” as a guarantee of sound quality.
What “digital amplifier” means—and what it does not
Class D amplifiers use a switching output stage. That can reduce power dissipation and cooling needs compared with less efficient designs, which is useful in compact or high-output installations. It does not mean every Class D amplifier takes a digital signal: many accept analog inputs, while digital-input models may accept PCM or I²S. Check the input specifications separately from the amplifier class.

Nor does the label predict a particular sound. The output filter, feedback design, speaker impedance, and distortion and noise performance all affect the result. Analog Devices notes that a speaker’s impedance varies with frequency and is complex, rather than a fixed resistance; output-filter design must account for the actual speaker load. In designs without feedback from the speaker side of the filter, component linearity can also affect distortion at the speaker. These are implementation considerations, not proof that every listener will hear a difference between particular products. Analog Devices: Class D Audio Amplifiers: What, Why, and How

Start with the system role and channel count
Decide whether you need a two-channel amplifier for music, a multichannel amplifier for home theater, or an integrated unit that combines amplification with source switching and other functions. A power amplifier may need a separate preamp or processor to control volume and select sources; an integrated amplifier may reduce the number of components. Confirm the intended role in the manufacturer’s documentation.

Match power ratings to the speakers
Compare output power only when the conditions match: load impedance, number of channels driven, and any stated distortion limit. A rating for one channel or one load does not automatically describe performance with every channel operating or with a different speaker. Check the speaker’s recommended amplifier range and impedance alongside the amplifier’s manual; do not treat a larger wattage number by itself as a better match.
Read performance figures in context
THD+N, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and frequency response can help compare specifications, but establish what each figure measures: the output level, bandwidth, load, and whether it is a manufacturer specification or an independent measurement. One THD+N result at a single power level does not describe performance across all listening levels.

Texas Instruments’ May 2026 application note gives family-level figures for its TAS58xx Class D amplifiers: THD+N typically below 0.03% at 1 W, SNR generally exceeding 100 dB, efficiency up to 90%, and a stated 20 Hz–20 kHz audible-spectrum response. These are TI’s claims for that chip family, not independent measurements of retail amplifiers or category-wide results. Check the connections you actually use
List the sources and components you intend to connect, then verify that the amplifier has the right inputs and outputs. Depending on the system, relevant connections or features may include analog inputs, digital audio inputs, a built-in DAC, phono input, Bluetooth, streaming, HDMI eARC, pre-outs, or a subwoofer output. A digital-input amplifier’s supported format is not the same thing as its Class D topology. Confirm compatibility and supported formats in the current manual.

Consider cooling and protection
Efficiency can matter when an amplifier will be installed in a confined space or run at high output. Check the manufacturer’s ventilation guidance and look for documented protection against overcurrent, overtemperature, short circuits, or voltage problems. Class D can reduce heat and cooling requirements, but it does not remove the need to follow installation instructions.
Digital inputs bring their own design considerations
Digital-input Class D designs have clocking requirements in addition to the amplifier’s output-stage design. In an Analog Devices article about these implementations, author Matt Felder writes: “For good audio quality, most digital input amplifiers require fairly low levels of jitter on BCLK or MCLK.” The article explains that excessive jitter can affect dynamic range or full-scale THD+N, while newer designs may tolerate more jitter. This describes a design concern; it is not a ranking of consumer amplifiers or a reason to assume an audible difference between products. A multichannel Class D example: Marantz AMP 10
Marantz describes the AMP 10 as a reference multichannel amplifier using custom Class D amplifiers. Its product page lists 16 channels and 200 watts per channel. That makes it an example to consider for a multichannel home-theater system—not a universal recommendation or evidence that it is the best choice for stereo listening. Consult Marantz’s current product documentation for the conditions behind its power rating and for system compatibility. Marantz AMP 10 official product page
Integrated and streaming features are a separate decision
For buyers prioritizing a simpler stereo setup, an integrated amplifier with source connections and streaming may be more useful than a standalone power amplifier. What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 stereo-amplifier roundup lists the NAD C 3050 with MDC2 BluOS-D at 100 watts per channel, with MM phono, HDMI eARC, USB-A, optical and coaxial inputs, Bluetooth aptX HD, and streaming connections. Those specifications illustrate the kinds of features a stereo buyer may weigh; the roundup’s review judgments belong to What Hi-Fi?, and it does not establish the NAD as a Class D amplifier.
