What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your admin dashboard uses Filament, start with its built-in DatePicker and keep the native HTML picker unless users need an interaction it does not provide. Filament offers a JavaScript picker through native(false); add a plugin only for a specific need—such as date ranges or multiple-date selection—and confirm it supports your installed Filament version. This guidance is Filament-specific: a Laravel app built with Blade, Livewire, Inertia, Vue, or React may need a different component.
Start by defining what the field represents
Choose the data meaning before choosing the calendar. A date-only value, such as a birthday or effective date, is not the same as a timestamp for a scheduled publication. Decide what the application must validate and save, then check that the control and server-side handling preserve that meaning.

- Date only: Store and validate a calendar date without treating it as a moment that shifts across timezones.
- Date and time: Decide which timezone the user sees, how that value is converted, and which timestamp is saved. Filament documents timezone configuration for
DateTimePicker; it loads the value in the selected timezone and converts it back when saving. Confirm that behavior against your installed version and application setup.
Display format and stored value are separate concerns. Localized labels and dates can make a field easier to use, but parsing, validation, and persistence still need an unambiguous format.

For a Filament dashboard, use the built-in control as the baseline. Filament’s 4.x date-time picker documentation describes native HTML date selection as the default and shows native(false) for opting into its JavaScript-based picker. It also documents locale and display-format configuration. See the Filament 4.x date-time picker documentation.
#1 Best Overall
This is a sensible choice when users need a straightforward date field and the built-in behavior meets the workflow. It avoids adopting a separate picker plugin before you know one is necessary. Check the documentation for the Filament major version actually installed in your project; APIs and available options can differ between versions.
Choose by the interaction users need
Do not treat every calendar-related field as the same requirement. Write down the interaction before comparing packages:
- One date: A standard date field for a single calendar day.
- Date range: A start and end date selected as a pair.
- Multiple dates: Several separate calendar days in one field.
- Date and time or time only: A value that includes a clock time, or a time without a calendar date.
- Week or month: Selection at a coarser calendar granularity.
If the built-in control does not cover a required mode, a third-party integration may be justified. A feature list in a plugin’s own documentation establishes what its publisher describes, not comparative quality or independent accessibility testing.

Built-in DatePicker / DateTimePicker |
Native HTML date selection by default; JavaScript picker via native(false); locale and display-format configuration; timezone configuration for date-time fields, in Filament 4.x documentation. |
A Filament dashboard whose required interaction is covered by the built-in field. | Exact API and behavior for your installed Filament version, especially date versus timestamp handling. |
| Flatpickr through the Coolsam Filament plugin | The plugin page documents date, time, date-time, range, week, multiple-date, and month modes, plus installation and supported plugin/Filament version combinations. | A workflow that specifically needs one of those modes or the plugin’s documented configuration. | Current compatibility with your Filament version, maintenance, accessibility, and asset setup. The capabilities are described by the plugin publisher, not established by an independent comparison. |
| Pikaday through the PTPlugins Filament plugin | The plugin page describes locale-aware display, an ISO Y-m-d model/database value, minimum and maximum date and year, first-day-of-week, and internationalization settings. |
A simple localized date field if the integration and its version support match your application. | Validate the stored value and parsing in your app; the plugin’s stated behavior is not a guarantee for every configuration. “Lightweight” is the publisher’s description, not a measured size comparison. |
Review the vendor pages for the Coolsam Flatpickr plugin and PTPlugins Pikaday plugin. Plugin compatibility information is version-specific and can change; verify it against both your project’s installed Filament major version and the package release you plan to install.

Evaluate localization, accessibility, and operational cost
A picker that appears to work with one user and browser may still be a poor fit for the full dashboard. Compare the details that affect your users and the cost of maintaining the integration:
- Localization: Check translated labels, month and weekday names, display format, first day of the week, and right-to-left needs. Make sure localized display does not create ambiguity in parsing or saved values.
- Accessibility: Test keyboard operation, focus placement and return, screen-reader announcements, contrast, and behavior at zoom. The available documentation does not establish a comparative keyboard or screen-reader winner.
- Compatibility: Confirm Laravel and Filament versions, Livewire integration where applicable, frontend framework, and asset build requirements.
- Operational cost: Account for added JavaScript and CSS, another dependency, upgrade work, and testing. There is no supported bundle-size or performance comparison for these options, so base the decision on your own measurements if those factors matter.
Test the chosen control in the browsers and with the assistive technology your dashboard supports before relying on it in production.

Use a practical selection sequence
- Identify the value: Decide whether the field represents a date, a date-time, a time, a range, multiple dates, a week, or a month.
- Try Filament’s built-in field: For a Filament project, confirm whether
DatePickerorDateTimePickercovers the interaction. Check the documentation for your installed major version. - Set display and storage rules: Specify the user-facing locale and display format, then independently verify parsing, validation, and the persisted value.
- Add a plugin only for a concrete gap: Compare its documented modes and configuration with the actual workflow instead of choosing by feature count or an unverified “lightweight” claim.
- Verify the integration: Check version compatibility, assets, keyboard and screen-reader behavior, localization, and date/time conversion in the application.
What changes outside Filament?
The recommendation to begin with Filament’s built-in field applies to Filament dashboards, not to every Laravel application. A Blade, Livewire, Inertia, Vue, or React interface may use a different component library or integration path. Filament’s older 1.x forms documentation is available at Building Forms — Admin Panel — Filament 1.x; treat it as version-specific documentation, not as proof that a current API works unchanged in an older or newer installation.
