How to Choose a Crypto Exchange for Buying and Holding Crypto

Choose a crypto exchange by checking its local legal entity, supported assets and withdrawal routes, the full cost of buying and cashing out, and who controls your crypto keys.

Choose an exchange by checking the rules and exact provider entity in your country, whether it supports the coin and withdrawal network you need, the full cost of buying and withdrawing, and how it holds customer assets. Then decide whether the convenience of leaving coins in the exchange account is worth relying on a third party—or whether you are prepared to manage a wallet and its recovery keys yourself. There is no single best exchange for every country, coin, payment method, and custody preference.

How do I choose a crypto exchange?

Compare exchanges against the same practical questions, using current terms for the country and account you would actually use. A brand’s availability does not establish that every product, asset, or custody service is permitted or treated the same way.

What to check What to verify Why it matters
Jurisdiction and legal entity Your country, the exact entity you would contract with, its relevant regulator registration or permissions, and which service those permissions cover. Availability, rules, and legal protections can vary by location, entity, and service.
Assets and transfer routes The exact coin and ticker, supported blockchain or network, deposit route, external withdrawal availability, and withdrawal limits. A coin appearing in a listing does not guarantee that your account can withdraw it over the network you need.
Total cost Funding and conversion charges, quoted execution price or spread, trading fees, and fiat or crypto withdrawal and network charges. A headline trading fee does not capture the full cost of buying and moving an asset.
Custody and failure terms Who controls the keys, storage and access policies, subcontractors, asset use or lending, insolvency treatment, and procedures for returning assets. Exchange custody introduces provider risk; self-custody shifts operational responsibility to you.
Account safeguards Multi-factor authentication, account recovery, support procedures, and protections against phishing or unauthorized access. Compromised account access can put funds at risk or prevent you from reaching them.
Transparency The scope and date of any proof-of-reserves report, whether liabilities are included, the assurance provided, and whether financial statements are audited. A reserve snapshot alone does not establish the platform’s full financial position or your priority if it fails.

Do not assume a platform’s name or marketing description answers these questions. For example, the SEC’s U.S. investor alert distinguishes crypto platforms from registered securities intermediaries and cautions that protections for registered securities do not automatically apply to crypto assets. Check the relevant regulator’s current register and the terms for the specific service in your jurisdiction.

What should I check about coins and withdrawals?

Start with the asset you intend to buy, but do not stop at its name in a list. Confirm the ticker, the network used for deposits and withdrawals, and whether external transfers are enabled for your account. Investor.gov advises customers to check which crypto assets a custodian permits them to hold. Platform terms can also impose limits or restrictions that differ by asset, region, or account.

  • Verify the network on both the exchange and your receiving wallet. A mismatch can prevent access to transferred assets.
  • Read current withdrawal rules, minimums, fees, and any account or regional restrictions before depositing.
  • If you plan to move coins to a personal wallet, make sure external withdrawals are available for that asset and network.

What fees should I compare?

Follow the entire route from money entering the account to funds leaving it. HMRC’s cryptoassets manual identifies deposit fees, possible fiat-conversion fees, trading fees, and fiat or crypto withdrawal fees as relevant cost categories. Its list is useful for comparison, not a live schedule of exchange prices.

  1. Funding: Check charges for your payment method and whether depositing requires a currency conversion.
  2. Buying: Compare the quoted price or spread as well as the stated trading fee. Look at the amount of crypto you would receive for the same order value.
  3. Withdrawing: Include the exchange’s withdrawal charge and any network cost shown for the transfer. Check fiat withdrawal costs too if you may later sell and cash out.

Fees and withdrawal charges can change, so compare the current schedule for the exact country, payment method, asset, and network. In the EU, MiCA Article 77 requires covered crypto-asset service providers exchanging crypto-assets to publish a firm price or pricing method and any applicable exchange limits, and to execute at the displayed price when the order is final. These requirements apply within the regulation’s scope; they are not a global rule.

Is it safe to leave crypto on an exchange?

Leaving crypto in an exchange account is convenient, but it means relying on a third party to control access to the private keys. A provider’s hack, shutdown, or bankruptcy can interfere with access to assets. Investor.gov’s 12 December 2025 bulletin puts the risk plainly: “If the third-party custodian is hacked, shuts down, or goes bankrupt, you may lose access to your crypto assets.”

Before holding a balance there, read the custody terms rather than treating a security feature or reserve graphic as a guarantee. Look for who controls keys, how they are stored, whether other companies are involved, whether customer assets may be lent or otherwise used, how assets are handled if the provider becomes insolvent, and how customers request their return. Ask what any insurance covers and what it excludes; do not assume crypto holdings have bank-deposit insurance or protections that apply to registered securities.

What proof-of-reserves can—and cannot—tell you

Proof-of-reserves is a voluntary way for a platform to present evidence about reserve assets, often at a particular point in time. Its usefulness depends on the engagement’s scope, frequency, assurance level, provider, and public disclosures. A snapshot may not show liabilities or activity between snapshots, and it is not equivalent to an audited financial statement. The SEC warns: “In sum, investors should exercise extreme caution when relying on proof of reserves to conclude that a crypto asset entity has sufficient reserve assets to meet customer liabilities.”

When a platform publishes a report, check its date, what assets and liabilities it covers, and who performed the work. A reserve claim does not guarantee that assets will be available on demand or establish your priority in insolvency.

Should I use exchange custody or my own wallet?

An exchange account is custodial: the provider manages access to the private keys. With self-custody, you control the keys and must protect them. Investor.gov describes a hot wallet as connected to the internet and convenient for transactions; a cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline and is generally less exposed to cyberthreats. A cold device can still be lost, damaged, or stolen.

Option Main trade-off Responsibility to understand
Exchange custody Convenient access through the provider, but access depends on the provider and your account. Review custody, asset-use, insolvency, account-recovery, and return procedures.
Self-custody You control the keys, but take on the work and risk of protecting them. Secure private keys and recovery information; losing a key or recovery phrase can mean permanent loss of access.

A hardware wallet is one possible form of cold storage, not a substitute for safe recovery practices. Protect the recovery phrase separately and never share private keys or seed phrases. Investor.gov recommends strong passwords and multi-factor authentication for accounts.

For providers within MiCA’s scope in the EU, Article 75 sets out custody-agreement information and requirements including custody policy, authentication and security systems, fees and applicable law, position records and statements, segregation, liability for certain provider-attributable losses, and return procedures. Article 75(6) says providers must have procedures to return client crypto-assets or the means of access as soon as possible. These are EU-specific requirements for covered services, not a universal promise about every exchange.

What regulation should I check in my country?

Verify the precise service and legal entity rather than relying on a platform’s global brand or a general claim that it is “regulated.” Check the regulator’s current register, the permissions shown for that entity, and whether they cover the exchange, custody, or other service you intend to use. Legal protections differ across countries, and a registration in one jurisdiction does not establish protections in another.

As a dated UK example, the Financial Conduct Authority says its final rules and guidance published on 30 June 2026 will apply to cryptoasset firms granted permission to operate under FSMA on or after 25 October 2027. That is a UK-specific future applicability date, not a current global licensing rule.

How to compare two exchanges fairly

Use the same checklist for each platform and record when you checked it. A provider comparison is only useful if it reflects the same country, asset, payment method, order size, and intended withdrawal route.

  • Record the exact contracting entity and the regulator permissions relevant to your location.
  • Confirm the asset, network, deposit and withdrawal routes, and applicable limits.
  • Calculate the complete cost of funding, buying, withdrawing, and—if relevant—cashing out.
  • Compare custody terms, asset use, insolvency language, security and account-recovery procedures.
  • Read the date and scope of any reserve assessment instead of treating it as a guarantee.
  • Decide whether you want the exchange to control access or are ready to maintain your own keys and backups.

There is no provider-by-provider ranking or current fee comparison here: the relevant prices, permissions, asset support, and withdrawal rules depend on provider and jurisdiction and can change. Apply the checks directly to the terms in force for the account you would open.
