What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a CRT by matching the console’s video signal and region to the exact TV’s inputs and signal handling, then test the individual set before buying. For many older consoles, the key question is whether it handles 240p and 480i as you want—not simply whether it has a familiar brand name or the right-looking connector.
Start with the console’s signal and region
Before comparing televisions, identify what your console outputs: the video mode, regional format, and available connections. NTSC and PAL systems use different nominal horizontal line rates: OmaCRT lists 15.734 kHz for NTSC and 15.625 kHz for PAL. These are signal-timing figures, not a guarantee that a particular television accepts either format. OmaCRT’s technical documentation is useful context; verify compatibility for the specific console and TV.

For many older systems, check both 240p and 480i. A TV may accept a signal yet process it in a way you do not want. The HD Retrovision compatibility list distinguishes its 240p compatibility test from its 240p processing test, with results varying by exact model. The list is dated December 11, 2017, and includes user-recorded tests, so treat it as a historical reference and a reason to test—not as a complete current database.
Match the console and TV connections
Compare the console’s actual output with the inputs on the exact set. A connector’s presence does not prove that the TV supports the signal mode or processes it as desired. The buying guide’s overview of retro gaming video connections can help identify the connection types, but availability varies by console, television, and region.

| Connection | What to verify |
|---|---|
| RGB SCART | Check that the console outputs RGB and the TV’s SCART socket supports RGB, not merely composite video over SCART. Confirm regional availability. For custom PC-to-SCART setups, pin-level signal requirements matter. |
| Component (YPbPr) | Confirm the console outputs component and the TV accepts the mode you intend to use. Component jacks alone do not establish how a TV processes 240p. |
| S-Video | Both devices need compatible S-Video connections. Use a lead made for the console; do not assume one cable works across systems. |
| Composite | Look for the yellow video input and check that it matches your console’s output. It is a basic analog connection; the resulting picture depends on the equipment. |
| RF | Check that the television has a suitable tuner and that the console’s RF output or modulator arrangement matches it. This is the least direct connection in the buying guide’s comparison. |
No connection type is automatically best for every setup. The console, region, cable, and TV’s signal processing all affect the result.
Understand why HD CRTs need extra checking
HD CRTs can handle signals differently from standard-definition sets. A 2001 Sony Electronics training manual documents specific HA-3 and RA-5A chassis converting incoming standard 480i and higher-resolution signals to match a 33.75 kHz horizontal display frequency. The manual also lists 31.5 kHz for 480p, 45 kHz for 720p, and 33.75 kHz for 1080i in its discussion of those chassis. These details apply to the documented Sony chassis, not every HD CRT.

That example shows why component input—or an HD label—cannot by itself confirm preferred 240p rendering or low input delay. Find information for the exact model and, where possible, connect the intended console and see how the image behaves. The Sony Electronics training manual is specific technical documentation, not a general rule for all CRT televisions.
Inspect the individual set before buying
A model name is not a condition report. If the seller allows a test, take the console and a known-good cable that matches both devices. Try the signal modes you care about and look for a stable image, usable geometry, and visible defects.

- Get the exact model number. Ask for a clear photo of the input panel. Use the manual or a model-specific compatibility record to check the candidate rather than relying on brand alone.
- Test your real setup. Connect the intended console and cable. Confirm the TV locks onto the signal and the picture remains stable; a pattern or image with fine detail can make behavior easier to judge.
- Check the picture across the screen. Look at a grid or straight edges for obvious geometry problems, and inspect color and focus across the image. There is no universal pass/fail threshold established for these checks, so judge whether the picture is acceptable to you.
- Plan transport and placement. Confirm the cabinet and screen can be moved and placed safely with suitable help. Weight and handling vary by model; consult the exact manual instead of relying on a generic estimate.
Do not open a CRT as part of a casual inspection. Internal CRT work is outside the scope of a purchase check, and the sources cited here do not provide a safe repair procedure.

The available model-level compatibility evidence and connection guidance support checking signal and input fit, but do not establish a universally superior brand, screen size, or model. Local used-set availability, condition, and price also vary; no reliable current market-wide price or supply figure is established here.
