One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose a counter-drone detection system by starting with the threats your facility needs to detect and the people and procedures that will respond—not with a sensor’s advertised range. Match sensor coverage and verification to the site’s layout, surrounding radio activity, staffing and aviation context, then require a demonstration under representative site conditions. A detection alert is a cue to investigate, not a judgment about a drone operator’s intent or the level of threat.
What should a facility decide before comparing systems?
First define the job the system must do. A warehouse watching a broad perimeter, a crowded venue with nearby buildings and a critical facility near an airport may face different detection and response needs. Without a site plan, threat profile and operating concept, there is no evidence-based way to name one universally best system or set a reliable coverage threshold.

- Describe the site and its operating environment. Map boundaries, buildings, terrain, likely lines of sight, access points and areas where obstructions could hide a target. Note expected weather, nearby sources of radio-frequency (RF) activity and the presence of clutter such as birds.
- Define what needs to be detected. Identify the drone types and operating conditions relevant to the facility. Ask what the system can detect and track in those conditions; do not treat a headline range as proof of coverage throughout the site.
- Write down the response procedure. Decide who receives alerts, who checks them, how a possible incident is escalated and how the facility coordinates with relevant authorities. The FAA cautions that “Detection systems do not have the ability to determine intent or the level of threat posed by UAS.” A person-led assessment is therefore part of the system’s operating design.
- Set acceptance criteria. Before a demonstration or purchase, specify the site scenarios to be tested, what counts as a successful detection or useful track, how false alerts will be recorded and who signs off on the results.
Which sensor types fit the facility?
Each modality observes a different characteristic of a drone and has different blind spots. A sensor mix can let one system cue another for verification, but adding sensors also creates integration and operating requirements. The table describes roles and constraints, not guaranteed performance for a particular product.
| Sensor type | What it can contribute | Conditions to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Radar | Active sensing that can provide alerts or tracking, depending on system design. | Site layout, obstructions, clutter and the system’s design affect performance. The modality alone does not establish a detection range. |
| Passive RF | Listens for radio activity associated with a drone or controller and may provide useful operational information. | Weak received signals and background RF activity can limit detection. Some systems offer only coarse source direction or limited tracking; ask what the specific configuration demonstrates. |
| Electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) | Visible-light or thermal imagery can help an operator inspect or classify a cue. | Visibility, line of sight and camera placement matter. These sensors are often used to validate a cue rather than treated as a universal stand-alone solution. |
| Acoustic | Uses sound signatures to detect or help identify a drone. | Usefulness depends on the drone’s sound, distance and ambient noise. Test whether relevant targets can be heard at the distance the facility requires. |
| Sensor fusion | Combines modalities that may cross-check alerts or improve detection, localization or tracking in some circumstances. | Integration, sensor availability and operator workflow need testing. Combining sensors does not eliminate site-specific gaps. |
For passive RF in particular, do not assume a listening system will detect every aircraft: its performance depends on the signal reaching the receiver and on the surrounding RF environment. Ask the vendor to distinguish detection, location and continuous tracking in the configuration being offered.

- ⚠️ Important Notice: Important: This device detects compatible Remote ID broadcasts only. It will not detect every drone. Drones that are not transmitting Remote ID, have Remote ID disabled, or use an unsupported transmission method will not be detected. Actual reception range varies based on the transmitting drone, signal strength, terrain, buildings, interference, receiver placement, and environmental conditions. A compatible phone or tablet and supported application are required to display detection information. This is expected behavior and not a malfunction. - Portable Remote ID Detection – Receives compatible Remote ID broadcasts from nearby drones to provide real-time airspace awareness through a supported application.
- View Available Drone Information – Displays available broadcast data that may include drone location, altitude, movement, identification information, and operator or control-station location when transmitted.
- Wireless Passive Receiver – Receives compatible wireless Remote ID signals without transmitting commands, controlling drones, interfering with communications, or providing jamming capabilities.
- Works With Compatible Phones and Tablets – Detection information is displayed through a supported Remote ID application on a compatible mobile device; the receiver itself does not contain a display.
How do you compare systems fairly?
Use the same site-specific scenarios and written criteria for each bidder. Require evidence beyond a single advertised range, and distinguish what was demonstrated from what is inferred or promised. A useful comparison covers:
- Coverage and track continuity: What portions of the site are covered, and where do buildings or other obstructions create gaps?
- Detection and verification: Which sensors generate primary alerts, which provide secondary confirmation, and what happens if one is unavailable?
- Environmental resilience: How does performance change with clutter, weather, terrain, line-of-sight limits and RF noise?
- False-alert handling: How are bird or other non-drone detections reviewed, recorded and resolved? How much operator attention does that process require?
- Operations and integration: How does the system connect to cameras, the security operations center and incident procedures? What staffing, training, network connectivity and maintenance does round-the-clock operation require?
- Data governance: What information is collected, where does it flow, how long is it retained, who can access it and what privacy controls are available?
- Lifecycle support: What installation, maintenance, training and recurring support are included, and what must the facility provide?
- Legal and aviation coordination: What review or coordination is needed for this site and configuration before testing or use?
What should a vendor demonstration and acceptance test prove?
Arrange a site survey and test against realistic facility-specific scenarios. Ask the vendor to document system configuration, test conditions, observed alerts and tracks, missed detections, false alerts and any operational limitations. Agree on pass/fail criteria in writing before the test so that a demonstration does not turn into an unstructured product presentation.

Ask bidders these questions:
- Which drone types and operating conditions were included in your performance demonstrations, and which were not?
- What coverage and track quality can you demonstrate across this facility, including behind buildings or other obstructions?
- How does the system distinguish drone-like detections from birds and other clutter, and how are false alerts reviewed?

How do U.S. legal and aviation limits affect the purchase?
For a U.S. private or local-government facility, do not assume that owning the property authorizes interception of communications, jamming, takeover or disabling an aircraft. These are not ordinary extensions of a detection purchase. The August 2020 interagency advisory from the FAA, DOJ, DHS and FCC recommends obtaining advice from counsel experienced in federal and state criminal, surveillance and communications law before testing, acquiring, installing or using a system. It also says the advisory does not cover state and local law or every possible civil liability. The agencies advise entities to conduct their own legal and technical analysis rather than rely solely on a vendor’s claims about legality or functionality.
Review the exact functions and operating methods of the proposed configuration. Ask whether mitigation features are included, optional or disabled, and obtain independent legal review of those features. The FAA says it does not support C-UAS system use by entities outside the federally authorized departments it identifies. CISA describes particular statutory DHS authority for covered facilities and assets; that authority should not be treated as a general permission for ordinary private sites.

Facilities at or near airports should involve the relevant airport and FAA processes early, before settling on a test or deployment plan. A 2022 Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General report found that FAA had not completed necessary testing at that time to fully assess technology impacts on aviation safety. The report page records its recommendations closed in September 2026. That is a dated audit finding, not evidence that the same testing remains incomplete today.
