Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A useful choice also has a replaceable battery, manageable weight, effective filtration, simple maintenance and practical storage. The longest advertised runtime is not necessarily the vacuum that will finish your cleaning.
Start with a short audit of your home
Before comparing models, write down what the vacuum must clean. Bosch’s buying guidance identifies floor plan, storage and total area as important factors; those details determine whether a compact stick vacuum is convenient or whether you need longer runtime, a second battery or a different primary cleaner.

Map the floor surfaces
- Estimate the proportion of bare floors, low-pile rugs, thick rugs and wall-to-wall carpet.
- Note transitions between surfaces. A floorhead that works well on hard flooring may not glide or pick up equally well on carpet.
- Record delicate surfaces such as polished wood or easily scratched flooring.
List the messes you actually have
- Pet hair and long human hair require effective hair pickup and resistance to tangling.
- Large debris, such as cereal or litter, tests whether the head pushes material forward or scatters it.
- Fine dust makes filtration, bin sealing and emptying behavior more important.
Measure the cleaning job
Count floors, stairs, rooms, narrow passages and furniture that requires under-sofa or under-bed access. Include shelves, upholstery, car interiors and other above-floor tasks. Identify where the vacuum and charger can live; a machine that has no convenient storage location is less likely to be used.
Match the floorhead to your floors
The brush or roller is the part that contacts the surface, so its design often matters more than a headline suction figure. RTINGS advises a soft roller for bare floors and bristles for carpet and pet hair. Some machines use one mixed-surface head; others offer separate heads. Compare independent pickup results on surfaces that resemble yours.

| Home situation | Evidence and features to compare |
|---|---|
| Mostly hard floors | Bare-floor pickup, soft-roller design, debris scatter, edge cleaning, maneuverability and low-power runtime. |
| Hard floors plus carpet | Independent pickup on both surfaces, reliable transitions between them, available floorhead options and runtime with the powered head attached. |
| Thick or high-pile carpet | Carpet pickup, ease of moving the head and whether strong suction makes it stick or hard to steer. RTINGS reported this behavior on a tested Dyson V15 and treated it as a model-specific result, not a universal rule. |
| Pets or long hair | Hair pickup, anti-tangle performance, a motorized pet tool, bin capacity, filter access and availability of replacement parts. |
Do not compare motor watts, air watts, pascals or other power units as if they were interchangeable. Manufacturers may measure them differently. A controlled pickup test on the relevant floor is more useful than a larger number measured under unknown conditions.
Read runtime claims under the right conditions
Runtime is a range of outcomes, not one universal number. RTINGS notes that manufacturer figures generally represent the lowest power setting. Which? measures battery performance at minimum and maximum settings, while TechRadar cautions that a long Eco-mode claim has little value if the vacuum cannot collect the dirt on your floors.
What changes runtime
- Power mode: maximum suction can reduce operating time substantially.
- Powered floorhead: a motorized roller uses more energy than a passive nozzle.
- Attachment: a motorized mini tool can draw power while cleaning stairs or upholstery.
- Surface resistance: thick carpet may require more power than smooth flooring.
- Battery condition: capacity declines as a lithium-ion battery ages.
- Temperature and charging state: published figures may come from controlled conditions rather than a complete household clean.
Translate the claim into your routine
Ask which setting and attachment produced the quoted figure. Then compare that figure with the time required for your own floors, including pauses to move furniture and empty the bin. If you normally use high power on carpet, treat an Eco-mode maximum as a best-case reference rather than expected cleaning time. For a large home or long sessions, check recharge time and whether a compatible spare battery can be purchased in your market.

A cordless vacuum eventually needs a new battery. Which? senior researcher and writer Humairaa Habib states: “Lithium-ion batteries always deplete and eventually die over time, and at Which? we believe that cordless products should last longer than the batteries they come with. That’s why we no longer award Best Buys if it’s not possible to buy spare batteries from the manufacturer – no matter how good the vac might be.”
Check the exact model number, not just the product family, and verify that the manufacturer sells an official replacement or spare battery where you live. Confirm whether the battery is user-replaceable, requires tools or service, and whether a second battery can charge while you use the first. An advertised battery accessory that is unavailable in your country does not solve a runtime or longevity problem.

Check weight, balance and everyday handling
Total weight is only part of comfort. A top-heavy machine can feel tiring even when its specification-sheet weight appears low. Independent testing evaluates pushing, steering, stairs, overhead work and other handling tasks alongside cleaning performance.
For floors
Look for a head that pivots smoothly around chair legs and can lie low enough to reach under furniture. Strong suction can improve pickup but may increase drag, especially on dense carpet. Read handling observations for the actual floorhead you would use.
For stairs and above-floor cleaning
Compare the weight of the handheld unit with the wand and tool attached. A long wand may help floors but be awkward on stairs. Check whether the package includes a crevice tool, dusting brush and motorized mini tool, and whether each can be attached without holding a trigger continuously.
For storage
Measure the proposed parking space and check whether the charger is a wall mount, floor stand or separate cable. Confirm that the vacuum can be stored safely without the head or wand blocking a walkway.
Evaluate filtration and dust containment
For people sensitive to dust, look beyond a label such as “HEPA.” Seek independent evidence of particle filtration and inspect how the bin seals during operation and emptying. RTINGS warns that bagless bins can release dust when emptied and suggests doing so outdoors when possible.

- One-Touch Emptying Design: The rechargeable vacuum cleaner features a hygienic one-touch system for quick disposal of dirt and debris. With a 1.3L dust cup, it supports multiple cleaning sessions without frequent emptying, combining convenience and efficiency in every use
- Prefer a sealed filtration system with a clearly specified filter arrangement.
- Check whether filters are washable, how often they need cleaning and whether replacements are sold.
- Look for an emptying mechanism that lets you release debris without reaching into the bin.
- Consider where emptying will happen; an indoor bin over a kitchen counter may expose you to more dust than an outdoor bin.
Filtration performance during cleaning and dust released during maintenance are separate questions. A vacuum can retain particles well while running yet still create a cloud when its bin is opened.
Include maintenance in the purchase decision
A cordless vacuum needs regular care to maintain pickup and runtime. Before buying, find the instructions for the exact model and check:
- How the brush roll is removed and cleared of wrapped hair.
- Whether the floorhead has a removable end cap or access hatch.
- How the bin, cyclone and filters are cleaned.
- How long washable parts must dry before they can be reinstalled.
- Whether replacement filters, brush rolls and batteries are officially available.
- How blockages are identified and cleared.
A small bin may be acceptable for quick daily cleaning but frustrating in a pet-owning home or during a deep clean. Compare stated capacity where available, but also look for independent comments about how often testers had to empty it.
Use independent tests intelligently
Different test sources answer different questions, and their scores are not interchangeable.
| Source and approach | What it can tell you | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Which? testing, 2026 | Tests across surfaces and assesses usability, maintenance, battery performance at minimum and maximum settings, noise and energy use. It buys vacuums for testing and updates its programme each year. | Its published score weights are cleaning performance and allergen retention 60%, ease of use 20%, battery life 15%, and noise and energy consumption 5%. These are Which?’s weights, not an industry standard. |
| RTINGS 2026 comparison | Considers runtime, floor type, weight, particle filtration and emptying, with laboratory results for tested models. | Results apply to the tested model, test conditions and RTINGS scoring system. |
| TechRadar hands-on reviews | Reviewers test in homes on floor types, pet hair and larger debris, and assess comfort, maneuverability, battery life, maintenance and value. | Use the underlying conditions and observations rather than treating an editorial pick as universal. |
| Manufacturer guidance | Bosch, Samsung and Eureka explain factors such as layout, floor type and product features. | Useful for understanding intended features, but manufacturer claims are not independent comparative results. |
Which? senior scientific advisor Monika Gil explains its emphasis this way: “When calculating the score, we consider what’s most important. Which? members told us that, first and foremost, a vac needs to be good at picking up dirt off any surface and keeping it contained – that’s why cleaning and allergen retention make up a large chunk of the overall score. Equally, a vacuum that is hard to use or doesn’t have enough battery to finish the job causes frustration. To be a top scorer, it needs to be the complete package.”

Choose according to your home’s priority
| Your priority | Give the most weight to | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Fast daily cleaning on hard floors | Bare-floor pickup, soft roller, low-power runtime and easy steering. | Does it collect fine dust without scattering larger debris? Can it reach under furniture? |
| One vacuum for mixed surfaces | Independent results on both floors, a suitable transition system and powered-head runtime. | Does the same head work acceptably everywhere, or will you change heads? |
| Thick carpet | Carpet pickup and maneuverability at the power level you need. | Does the head glide, or does suction make it stick? |
| Pets | Hair pickup, anti-tangle design, motorized tools, bin size and replacement parts. | Can you remove wrapped hair without disassembling the entire head? |
| Stairs, cars and shelves | Handheld balance, total tool weight and included accessories. | Can you carry and operate it one-handed for the whole task? |
| Large area or long sessions | Realistic high-power runtime, recharge time and official spare-battery availability. | Can one battery finish, or can you swap a charged one without waiting? |
| Dust sensitivity | Particle filtration, sealed construction and low-dust emptying. | Where will you empty the bin, and are replacement filters available? |
A step-by-step buying process
- Write the home brief. Record floor proportions, carpet pile, rugs, pets, hair, stairs, above-floor jobs, total area and storage space.
- Set the required cleaning mode. Decide whether you normally need Eco, Auto or maximum power, and whether the powered floorhead will remain attached.
- Shortlist by floorhead. Remove models lacking an appropriate bare-floor roller, carpet brush or transition capability.
- Read independent pickup results. Prioritize tests on your actual surfaces and look for notes about scatter, edge cleaning and hair tangling.
- Check realistic runtime. Find the runtime at the intended power setting and attachment, then compare it with your measured cleaning time.
- Verify battery support. Search the manufacturer’s parts pages for an official spare or replacement battery for the exact model and your market.
- Assess handling and upkeep. Check balance, stair use, bin emptying, filter washing, brush-roll access, noise and charger storage.
- Confirm the complete package. Ensure the supplied heads and tools cover every task you listed; do not assume an accessory is included because a product family offers it.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by the biggest runtime number
Why it fails: The number usually comes from the lowest power mode and may exclude a powered floorhead.
Better approach: Compare minimum and maximum settings, attachment conditions and recharge time. Treat Eco runtime as a ceiling, not a promise for carpet cleaning.
Choosing by suction units alone
Why it fails: Watts, air watts and pascals measured by different brands are not directly comparable.
Better approach: Use independent pickup tests on equivalent surfaces and inspect the floorhead design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Assuming one head suits every floor
Why it fails: Soft rollers, carpet bristles and mixed heads behave differently on debris and fibers.
Better approach: Read separate hard-floor and carpet results, and confirm whether extra heads are included or optional.
Forgetting emptying and filter care
Why it fails: A full bin, blocked filter or wrapped brush can reduce pickup and shorten runtime.
Better approach: Read the maintenance schedule and make sure replacement filters and brush parts can be obtained.
Buying a machine that is uncomfortable
Why it fails: A heavy handheld unit or sticky head can turn a short task into an unpleasant one.
Better approach: Check independent handling results for floors, stairs and overhead work, not just listed weight.

When a cordless vacuum may not be the best sole cleaner
A cordless stick can be convenient for quick, frequent cleaning, but a large home with extensive carpet may demand more runtime, repeated charging or a spare battery. If independent tests show that the required power level cannot cover your area, consider whether a second battery, a different floorhead system or a corded vacuum as the primary machine better fits the job. That is a home-specific trade-off, not evidence that every cordless vacuum is inadequate.
