Isle of Berk, also listed as Claws of Berk, is a Forge modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18.2. Install the same pack release on every client and on the server; the current CurseForge files listing shows client and dedicated-server archives labeled ClawsOfBerk-[3.2.6] and ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6], uploaded October 6, 2026. The pack combines tameable dragons, Viking equipment, dungeons and unusual world generation, and its license permits both private and public servers.

What Isle of Berk (Claws of Berk) contains
Claws of Berk is a How to Train Your Dragon-inspired Minecraft pack by kesselot. Its official project descriptions center on riding, taming and breeding dragons, while adding Viking weapons and armor, dungeons, exploration objectives and custom terrain. The result is an adventure-survival pack rather than a small cosmetic add-on: world generation, progression, storage and multiplayer all depend on the included mod set.
The two major project pages report platform-specific download snapshots of 1,276,302 on CurseForge and 413.1K on Modrinth in 2026. Those figures belong to separate platforms and should not be added together as a total audience count.
#1 Best Overall
The version you should install
The supported target is Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 with the Forge loader. This is not a Bedrock pack, and selecting another Minecraft version or loader can produce a missing-mod error, a crash before the title screen or a server that rejects otherwise correct players.
As of the October 6, 2026 files listing, release 3.2.6 is represented by a client profile and a separate server archive. Use one release number throughout a multiplayer installation. A 3.2.x client should not be paired with an older server pack unless the creator explicitly states that combination is compatible.
Install the client profile
The practical installation path is the same whether you use CurseForge or Modrinth: create a profile for the project, select Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge, then launch it once before adding a world. The project pages provide compatibility metadata; launcher button names can change between app versions.
- Install Java Edition. Install Minecraft: Java Edition and start the unmodified 1.18.2 profile once. This creates the launcher files and confirms that the Java installation can start the target game.
- Install a launcher app. In CurseForge or Modrinth, find the Isle of Berk/Claws of Berk project and choose the current Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge release. Do not select a similarly named pack for another game version.
- Let the launcher create an isolated profile. Keep the profile’s mods, configuration, saves and resource-pack folders together. Avoid copying individual jars from a different pack into it; dependency versions and configuration files are designed to work as a set.
- Launch before configuring a world. Start the profile and wait for the title screen. A successful first launch proves that the selected Minecraft and Forge versions load the pack’s baseline files.
- Create or import a world. Use the profile’s single-player menu to create a new world, or import an existing save only after making a separate backup.
What to check after the first launch
- The title screen identifies Minecraft 1.18.2 and loads without a mod-list error.
- The profile points to the intended instance directory rather than your vanilla installation.
- The pack’s resource-pack and configuration folders remain present.
- The selected release number is the same one your friends or server administrator will use.
If the launcher fails before the menu appears, check the three version boundaries first: Minecraft 1.18.2, Forge for that pack release and the Claws of Berk release number. Reinstalling random mods usually makes diagnosis harder.
Build a dedicated Claws of Berk server
The project supplies a dedicated archive named ClawsOfBerk+Server-[3.2.6] for the current listed release. The creator’s license allows private and public servers. Server files are listed through CurseForge, even when you discover the pack through another launcher.
- Download the matching server archive. Choose the server file with exactly the same release number as the client profile. Save it locally so you can restore that known-good package if an update fails.
- Use a clean directory. Extract the archive into a new folder dedicated to this server. Do not merge it with another Forge server, a vanilla world or an older Claws of Berk installation.
- Run the supplied launcher. Start the Forge/server launcher included in the archive according to the files supplied in that release. Launcher filenames and startup scripts can vary, so use the included script or the host’s documented Java command rather than guessing a filename.
- Accept the EULA. The first run normally creates
eula.txt. Open it, change the EULA setting to acceptance, save the file and start the launcher again. - Set server properties. Stop the server before editing
server.properties. Configure the world name, difficulty, player limit, whitelist and query or game port to match your plan. Leave the address field blank unless your host specifically requires a bind address. - Generate the world. Start the server and wait for Forge and the pack to finish creating the world and configuration files. The first startup can take longer than later starts because terrain and mod data are being generated.
- Test locally. Connect from the host computer or the same local network before inviting outside players. A local test separates pack and configuration problems from router or firewall problems.
- Invite players with the network endpoint. Give local players the host’s local address. Players outside the network need the public address and forwarded game port, or the connection details supplied by a rented host.
Files to preserve
Back up the world directory and the server’s configuration, mod and script files before changing anything. Preserve the exact server archive as well. A world can depend on generated data that is not obvious from the save folder alone, and restoring only player data is not a complete rollback.

Network and access checks
- Allow Java or the server process through the operating system firewall.
- Forward the configured Minecraft port from the router to the server computer when hosting from home.
- Use a whitelist for a private group and give operators only the permissions they need.
- Never publish the server’s administrative files or account credentials.
The pack’s official files establish compatibility and provide the archive, but they do not publish one universal memory setting, launch command, port-forwarding layout or performance benchmark. Those details vary with the release, operating system, world size and number of players.
Play with friends: choose a hosting approach
There are two practical routes: run the dedicated server yourself or rent a managed Minecraft server. Both require every player to install the matching client release. The choice is mainly about control versus convenience.
| Factor | Self-hosting | Rented hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Java/Forge files, configure the server, firewall and possibly router forwarding. | Upload or import the supplied server pack through the host’s panel; the provider handles the machine and network layer. |
| File and configuration control | Full access to scripts, configs, logs, world files and backups. | Usually panel, file-manager and SFTP access; exact permissions depend on the provider. |
| Backups | You must schedule, verify and store copies away from the server computer. | Some plans offer automated snapshots, but retention and restore limits must be checked in the current terms. |
| Player capacity | Limited by your CPU, memory, storage and internet upload capacity. | Limited by the selected plan and the host’s hardware allocation; no independent Claws of Berk benchmark is published. |
| Network accessibility | Home NAT, firewall and changing public addresses can require maintenance. | Usually provides a public address, while the provider manages routing and uptime. |
| Pack import support | You install the supplied server archive yourself. | Some panels offer modpack import tools; confirm that the panel supports Forge 1.18.2 and a custom server archive. |
| Price and support | No hosting bill, but you supply hardware, electricity and troubleshooting time. | Recurring cost and provider support; current pricing, response times and resource guarantees vary. |
A Modrinth release page displays a rented-server promotion with code Kess. The provider, price, commission and current validity are not independently established here, so treat any promotion as optional and verify its live terms before paying.
First steps in a new world
The official overview points to four useful early objectives. They make a safer route through a pack whose creatures and terrain can be more demanding than vanilla exploration.

Secure a base before long flights
Collect basic food, blocks, tools, light sources and a bed before pursuing distant landmarks. Dragon encounters range from small to large creatures; shelter gives you a place to recover, store items and return to if an expedition fails.
Learn the generated terrain
Claws of Berk uses unusual world generation and varied terrain. Map nearby coastlines, high ground and safe paths before committing to a long journey. Mark the base and any useful routes so a death does not erase your progress.
Look for Viking ships and villages
Ships and villages are named exploration targets in the project overview. Treat them as points of interest rather than guaranteed coordinates: generated structures depend on the seed and can be separated by difficult terrain.
Find dungeons
Dungeons provide a second progression goal. Bring spare food, blocks, light and a way to retreat. Store valuable finds before entering a deeper area, especially on a multiplayer server where another player can keep the base safe while you explore.

Update Claws of Berk without damaging a world
Handle every pack update as a world-maintenance operation, not as a routine launcher click. The 3.0.3 release notes specifically told players to move items out of backpacks and iron chests into vanilla chests and to back up worlds before updating or reinstalling. That release changed storage mods and Dragon Manual data, so mod changes can affect both inventories and saved progression.
- Stop the server and close the client. Never replace mods while a world is open or while the server is writing region files.
- Make a complete backup. Copy the world, configuration and relevant server files to a separate location. Keep the old pack archive so you can restore the previous environment.
- Read the target release notes. Look for storage, entity, world-generation, resource-pack and migration warnings. The 3.1.8 notes, for example, mention a deadlock-fix mod, resource-pack load-order changes, a chunk-timeout fix and a brewing-stand crash fix.
- Move vulnerable items. Before an update that changes storage mods, place backpack and iron-chest contents into ordinary vanilla chests, label them and record where they are.
- Update the server and clients together. Install the same release on the dedicated server and every player profile. Do not let one player connect with an older mod list while others are testing the new one.
- Test a copy first. If possible, restore the backup to a separate test instance, load the world and inspect inventories, dragons, structures and key machines.
- Keep the rollback available. If chunks fail to load, items disappear or the server deadlocks, stop it, restore the pre-update backup and return to the previous release while investigating.
Why the backup must be separate
A backup on the same disk as the live world does not protect against disk failure, accidental deletion or a bad overwrite. Keep at least one copy outside the server directory and verify that it contains the world folders and configuration you expect. For a group server, tell players when the backup was made and pause building during the migration window.
Troubleshoot the problems players report most often
The launcher says the pack is for the wrong version
Confirm that the profile is Minecraft Java 1.18.2, not another 1.18 release, and that it uses Forge rather than Fabric or a vanilla profile. Recreate the profile from the project page if its instance metadata has been edited.
The server rejects a player during login
Compare the client and server release labels, not just the Minecraft version. Remove manually added mods, restore the pack’s original configuration and confirm that the player is connecting to the intended server address. A 3.2.6 client and an older server archive are not an assumed compatible pair.
The server crashes while starting
Read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final shutdown line. Check Java and Forge compatibility for the supplied release, verify that the archive was extracted completely and remove no files unless the release notes instruct you to. A clean directory is often faster to test than repairing a mixed installation.
Best Value
Textures or menus appear wrong
Check the pack’s resource-pack files and load order. The 3.1.8 notes document resource-pack load-order changes, so retain the release’s supplied files and test with custom resource packs disabled before changing configuration.
Chunks time out or a brewing stand crashes
Make a backup, confirm that both sides use the same release and review the 3.1.8 notes, which record fixes for chunk timeouts and a brewing-stand crash. Do not keep repeatedly loading a damaged world; test the backup on a separate instance first.
Friends cannot connect from outside the home network
Test locally, then check the firewall, the configured server port, router forwarding and whether the public address has changed. If the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; a managed host or a network solution that supplies an externally reachable endpoint may be necessary.
Server administration checklist
- Pin the exact Claws of Berk release in your server notes.
- Require every player to use the matching Java 1.18.2 Forge profile.
- Whitelist a private server and review operator permissions.
- Schedule world backups before updates and after major builds.
- Keep one untouched copy of the previous server archive.
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly before copying files.
- Record changes to
server.propertiesand pack configuration. - Test updates on a copied world whenever storage or world-generation mods change.
Questions answered quickly
Is Isle of Berk available on Minecraft Bedrock?
The documented target is Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18.2 with Forge. The supplied compatibility information does not establish a Bedrock edition.
Can I run a private server?
Yes. The project license permits private and public server hosting, and a dedicated server archive is provided.
Do all players need the full modpack?
Yes. Each client should install the same Claws of Berk release and retain its supplied mods, configuration and resource-pack files. A vanilla client cannot join this Forge modded server.
Where are the server files obtained?
The release page identifies the dedicated server archive on CurseForge. Choose the server file whose release number matches the clients.
Is there an official universal RAM requirement?
No universal value is published in the supplied project information. Actual memory needs depend on the world, Forge overhead, view distance, entity activity and player count. Start with the host or launcher defaults for that release, monitor logs and performance, and change one setting at a time.
