A compact Bluetooth speaker can give music more body and project it into a room or outdoor space more effectively than a phone’s built-in speaker—but the result depends on the phone, placement, content, and surroundings. These five options make different trade-offs in portability, bass, volume behavior, and features. Their listed wattage and reviewers’ descriptions are not a controlled phone-versus-speaker loudness test, so treat this as a guide to choosing the right form and sound, not a guarantee that any one model will outplay every phone.
How to choose a compact speaker for stronger everyday sound
Phone speakers are designed to fit inside a thin handset. A separate speaker has more room for drivers and enclosure design, which can help music sound fuller and carry better. That does not mean every speaker is louder than every phone: listening distance, room acoustics, the recording, and the phone model all matter.

For a portable speaker, prioritize the qualities you will notice most: an attachment point if you want to clip it to a bag, a compact body for travel, bass and broad presentation for music, or useful protection for outdoor use. Manufacturer wattage is an electrical rating, not a direct loudness score. For example, JBL lists the Clip 5 at 7 W RMS, but that figure does not establish how loud it is compared with a phone.
Five compact speakers to consider
1. JBL Clip 5: the easiest to attach
The Clip 5’s wide integrated carabiner makes it the most straightforward pick here for attaching to a backpack or other suitable loop. JBL rates it IP67 for dust and water protection and advertises up to 12 hours of playtime, plus up to three additional hours with Playtime Boost. JBL cautions that battery duration varies with volume and audio content.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of acoustic loudness. The speaker also supports app EQ and Auracast multi-speaker linking. 2. Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen): a small, strap-friendly option
The second-generation SoundLink Micro is compact and has a removable, user-replaceable strap, which makes it useful when you want a speaker that can be secured to a bag. Android Central notes that this version has no microphone. TechRadar lists Bluetooth 5.4, IP67 protection, a 12-hour battery life, one dynamic driver, and two passive radiators.

TechRadar’s reviewer tested the speaker over multiple weeks in a music test space, at home, and in a shower. The review describes it as solid-sounding for its size, but says maximum volume brings compression, a thinner sound, and slightly shrill treble. Those are that reviewer’s observations, not a universal result for every listener or setting. Android Central also describes detail and bass relative to the speaker’s size, without establishing that it beats all phones. If you can accept a somewhat larger speaker, TechRadar’s direct comparison with the Clip 5 favors the WONDERBOOM 4 for bass weight and its 360-degree presentation. The same comparison calls the Clip 5 more balanced overall and easier to tune with EQ. That makes the WONDERBOOM 4 a sensible direction for listeners who value a fuller, more room-filling presentation over the smallest possible body, while the Clip 5 retains the convenience of its carabiner. These are comparative listening judgments from TechRadar, not standardized loudness measurements. TechRadar’s WONDERBOOM 4 versus Clip 5 comparison.

4. Sony SRS-XB100: a budget-pick candidate
RTINGS’ 2026 small Bluetooth speaker guide names the Sony SRS-XB100 as its budget pick. That designation makes it worth checking if price is a priority, but the available guide information does not establish detailed performance comparisons for this model. Check a current, model-specific review and local retailer listings before deciding; no current price is established here. RTINGS’ 2026 small Bluetooth speaker guide.
5. Tribit Stormbox Micro 2: consider it if a battery-pack function matters
RTINGS’ 2026 guide includes the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 among its small-speaker options and notes that it can act as a battery pack. That extra function may be useful on a day out, but the available guide information does not establish a detailed listening verdict or comparative loudness figure for this speaker. Confirm the specific model’s battery-pack behavior and other requirements in its current product documentation before relying on it to charge a device. RTINGS’ 2026 small Bluetooth speaker guide.

What the comparisons do—and do not—tell you
The strongest comparative evidence here is between compact speakers, not between speakers and phones. RTINGS reports that the JBL Clip 5 gets louder than the original Bose SoundLink Micro in its comparison; that does not compare it with the SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), nor with a phone. Separately, TechRadar reports compression and thinness at maximum volume for the second-generation Bose. Do not combine those findings into a single ranking across generations.
RTINGS’ guide also includes the Minirig 4 and reports that it reached up to 98.4 dB in RTINGS’ measurements. That figure belongs to the Minirig 4 alone; it is not a result for any of the five speakers above and is not a phone comparison. The guide describes trade-offs but does not make this measurement a like-for-like test against a handset.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the JBL Clip 5 if the integrated carabiner and a small, outdoor-ready design matter most, or if you want app EQ and Auracast linking.
- Consider the Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) if its strap-based attachment suits your use and you value a compact design; keep the reviewer’s maximum-volume caveat in mind if you often listen near full volume.
- Consider the WONDERBOOM 4 if you prefer more bass weight and a 360-degree presentation over the Clip 5’s smaller, clip-on format.
- Look at the Sony SRS-XB100 if you are pursuing a budget option, but verify current pricing and consult a detailed model review.
- Look at the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 if a speaker that can also serve as a battery pack appeals, and confirm the details in current product documentation.
Battery, protection, and price: check the details that affect your use
Battery estimates are not guarantees of runtime at a particular volume. JBL explicitly says the Clip 5’s advertised playtime depends on volume and audio content. For the Bose, TechRadar lists a 12-hour battery life; the available account does not establish a standardized battery test against the other models. Compare manufacturer estimates cautiously and check whether a product’s documentation explains the listening conditions behind them.
IP67 is the stated protection rating for both the Clip 5 and SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) in the cited product information. A protection rating helps distinguish these from speakers without a stated rating, but it does not establish how well any speaker will survive every accident or environment. Check each maker’s guidance for care and use.
Historical launch and review-era prices are not reliable current quotes. TechRadar records the Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) launch list price in August 2025 as $129 / £119.95 / AU$179.95. Its WONDERBOOM 4 versus Clip 5 comparison lists review-era prices of $99.99 / £89.99 / AU$149 for the WONDERBOOM 4 and $79.95 / £59.99 / AU$89.95 for the Clip 5. These figures describe those sources’ historical pricing, not current availability or prices; check a retailer in your region before buying.
