Choose a Commodore 64 font by deciding first whether you need the original machine’s character set, a C64-inspired desktop font, or a font licensed for a particular finished work. Native C64 glyphs have an 8×8-pixel grid and mode-specific shapes; desktop fonts can offer broader Unicode coverage, but may not preserve native character codes. For games and print, check the exact glyphs, mapping, and license before building the asset around them.
Start with the kind of C64 font you need
“Commodore 64 font” can mean either the machine’s character set or a desktop typeface that imitates its look. They are not interchangeable. A native character set is designed for the C64’s display modes and PETSCII conventions; a TTF or OTF is easier to use in ordinary desktop design software, but its characters may be mapped to Unicode or a Private Use Area instead.

What the C64 character grid means for design
A high-resolution C64 character occupies an 8×8-pixel cell and is encoded as eight bytes. A full set of 256 characters therefore takes 2 kB. In multicolor character mode, adjacent bits combine into double-width pixels, leaving four horizontal pixel positions across the same eight rows. These constraints shape stroke thickness, counters, and the appearance of small details; they are not merely a retro effect. Preview important glyphs in the actual target mode and palette. A letter that looks clear in a desktop font preview can lose a counter or change apparent weight when rendered with the C64’s wider multicolor pixels.

Choosing a character set for native C64 work
Match the character-set variant
The C64 has two standard character sets, commonly described in terms of big/graphics and big/small forms. Authenticity also depends on the language variant and character mapping. The repository documenting the default set identifies it as the one found on MOS 901225-01 and lists official Swedish/Finnish sets with å, ä, and ö. Check the glyphs required by the game rather than assuming that a standard set includes every language-specific character. See the C64 character-set repository for its set descriptions.
Account for custom-character tradeoffs
A custom character set can provide bespoke graphics, but it replaces access to the standard ROM characters in that configuration. The Programmer’s Reference Manual puts it plainly: “Generally, if you use your own character set by telling the VIC-II chip to get the character information from the area you have prepared in RAM, the standard Commodore 64 characters are unavailable to you.” This appears in its “Programming Graphics” section in the rehosted manual PDF linked above. Plan the full glyph inventory before committing to a replacement set.

Load a character set in VICE
The cited repository describes selecting a character-set file in VICE at Preferences → Settings → Machine → ROM → Chargen. Save the settings if you want the choice to persist. Verify that the loaded file is the intended set and test the game’s required PETSCII codes in the emulator.
Desktop fonts for pixel art and modern games
zeiche C64 TTF/OTF
The zeiche C64 font repository provides TTF and OTF files and describes coverage for Basic Latin, PETSCII graphics mapped to the Symbols for Legacy Computing block, box drawing, block elements, and reverse-video glyphs in a Private Use Area. The repository declares CC0 1.0 Universal. Confirm the downloaded file’s actual mapping and retain the corresponding license information; a visual resemblance between two symbols does not guarantee that they are the same code point or PETSCII value.

Pet Me 64
Kreative Korporation’s Pet Me 64 page describes a TrueType font with a complete C64 character set encoded in a Private Use Area range, plus extra Unicode support. The page says a release dated October 22, 2019 added support for Symbols for Legacy Computing, introduced in Unicode 13.0. Check the font’s mapping in the application you plan to use: typing a visually similar Unicode character is not necessarily equivalent to entering a native PETSCII code.
Void C64 and C64TwoPx
Void’s itch.io listing describes a paid digital Commodore 64 TrueType display font with Atari lowercase characters for game mockups and graphic design. The download includes C64.ttf and C64TwoPx.ttf, the latter described as a two-pixel variant. The listing states that free and personal projects or games may use the font, while commercial projects require payment at the suggested price. It showed a $5 minimum purchase price when accessed in 2026; price and terms may change, so check the current listing before use.
Test the actual interface, not just the alphabet
For a game or mockup, compare lowercase style and pixel weight at the intended display size. Test the actual strings that will appear: menus, prompts, punctuation, numerals, and any accented or platform-specific symbols. The options differ in lowercase treatment and glyph coverage, so a font that suits a title screen may not cover the needs of an entire interface.

Preparing a print or static-art file
For print, inspect a proof at the final physical size. Look at thin strokes, counters, punctuation, and any glyph that could be clipped or substituted. The cited sources do not establish a controlled print-legibility comparison among these fonts, so proofing the actual artwork is more useful than treating any one option as a universal print winner. For static images and vector art, verify that the font’s own license covers the output before delivery.
