How to Connect a 2-in-1 Laptop to an External Monitor and Keyboard

You can connect a 2-in-1 laptop to an external monitor and keyboard using its video-capable port and the right cable, adapter, or dock. The key is to check the laptop’s exact specifications: a USB-C connector does not automatically support video output.

1. Check the laptop’s ports and video support

Find the exact laptop model and check its manufacturer specifications or support page. Identify which port supports external video and what connection it requires. HDMI and DisplayPort are common monitor connections. Some laptops also send video over USB-C, but USB-C’s shape alone does not confirm that capability.

For USB-C video, check that the specific laptop port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) or the Thunderbolt feature required by the device you plan to use. Microsoft advises that the PC, external display, and cable all support a compatible alternate mode. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

2. Connect the monitor

When the laptop and monitor have matching ports

Connect the laptop’s video output to the monitor’s corresponding input using a suitable HDMI or DisplayPort cable. Turn on the monitor and select the input that matches the cable. ASUS’s monitor connection guide also recommends checking the available ports and selecting the appropriate display input.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

When the ports do not match

If the laptop supports video over USB-C but the monitor has HDMI or DisplayPort, use an adapter or dock that supports the laptop’s video mode and the monitor’s input. Check compatibility for the laptop port, cable, adapter or dock, and monitor together; a connector that fits is not proof that the full connection will work.

3. Connect the keyboard

  • Wired keyboard: Plug it into an available USB port on the laptop or a compatible dock.
  • Wireless keyboard: Connect or pair it using the method supported by that keyboard.

A dock can provide connections for a monitor, keyboard, and other peripherals, but its host connection must also work with the laptop. Microsoft’s docking guidance describes docks as supporting wired or wireless keyboard and mouse input.

4. Set up the display in Windows

  1. Connect the monitor and switch it to the input being used.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display.
  3. If the external monitor does not appear, use the display detection option in that section.
  4. Arrange the displays to match their physical positions, then choose how you want Windows to use them.

5. Decide whether you need a dock

A direct cable or adapter is usually the simpler option when you only need to connect one monitor. A dock is useful when you want a single laptop connection for the monitor and peripherals, or need additional ports. It is not a compatibility shortcut: confirm the laptop supports the dock’s required USB-C alternate mode or Thunderbolt connection.

Before choosing a dock, compare its host connection and video outputs with the laptop and monitor. Also check the number of displays, required resolution and refresh rate, available USB ports, and charging power if you want the dock to charge the laptop. These capabilities vary by model, so consult the specifications for each device rather than assuming a particular maximum.

6. Troubleshoot a monitor that does not appear

No picture

  • Confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the input connected to the laptop.
  • Reseat the cable at both ends; if possible, try a suitable replacement cable.
  • Check that the laptop port actually supports video output.

USB-C video fails or shows a limited connection

Verify that the laptop, cable, and monitor or adapter share a supported video mode. Try the laptop port specifically documented for DisplayPort Alternate Mode or the required Thunderbolt feature. Microsoft notes that a particular cable may be needed for some USB-C connections; see its USB-C troubleshooting steps.

The monitor works directly but not through a dock

Check the dock’s compatibility with the laptop and follow both manufacturers’ connection instructions. To isolate the problem, test with fewer adapters or devices connected.
