1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo choose a colocation data center, define your workload and constraints first, then compare facility-specific proposals against the same requirements for location, usable power and cooling, resilience, network access, security, support, service levels, deployment timing, growth and full-term cost. Verify the evidence for the exact facility and service—not just the provider’s general claims—and review the SLA and contract before signing.
Start with the workload, not the provider list
A colocation proposal is only comparable with another proposal when both are based on the same brief. Before contacting providers, document what you need to install, what the equipment will draw, where users and systems are located, how much downtime you can tolerate and when the deployment must be ready. Telstra’s provider-selection checklist and the iTechGuides buyer guide likewise frame the choice around requirements and questions for each candidate.

Separate day-one needs from expected growth
List the equipment and footprint needed at launch, then forecast what you may add during the contract. State rack or cabinet count, equipment dimensions, sustained and peak power demand, required density, and whether you need dual power feeds. Use the same assumptions for each candidate. A provider’s general statement that it has capacity does not establish that customer-usable power, cooling or adjacent space is available in the hall and cabinet you are being offered.
Describe workload dependencies and constraints
Record required carriers, cloud connections, exchanges or other network endpoints; acceptable latency or proximity needs; and any data-location, regulatory, security or disaster-recovery requirements. Note the staff who may need to reach the site, delivery needs, the target go-live date and the budget assumptions procurement will use. Mark each item as mandatory, preferred or flexible. This prevents a persuasive but irrelevant feature—such as a higher infrastructure classification—from outweighing a constraint that could stop the workload from operating.

Compare each proposed facility on the same axes
Request a facility-specific specification sheet and current availability for the exact site and, where possible, the proposed hall. A carrier list, certificate or general security statement for a provider does not automatically describe every location or service. Ask for written answers and records that let your technical, security and procurement teams check each claim.
| Area | What to document and verify |
|---|---|
| Location and business fit | Data location, customer and staff proximity, latency considerations, applicable laws, recovery-site needs, and local weather, security, property-use and building-code risks. Uptime Institute notes that regional and building factors are outside what its Tier topology classifications alone establish. |
| Space, power and cooling | Cabinet or rack footprint, customer-available committed power, density limits, A/B feeds if needed, backup arrangements, cooling capacity at the proposed density, maintenance practices and expansion capacity. |
| Resilience and evidence | Whether a resilience statement describes design intent or a certification; the site and stage covered; operating and maintenance practices; and relevant recovery arrangements. |
| Network and interconnection | Named carriers and cloud connections in the building, physically diverse paths, exchange access, cross-connect availability, provisioning lead times, one-time and recurring charges, and operator restrictions. |
| Security and compliance | Facility-specific audit reports or certificates, their scope and exceptions, access controls, visitor and delivery procedures, incident escalation and any customer audit rights. Match the evidence to actual legal, regulatory and contractual obligations. |
| Service and operations | Support availability, remote-hands tasks and response targets, access procedures, change approvals, delivery handling, escalation routes, and who operates the facility. |
| Commercial terms | Setup and installation, reserved or metered power, connectivity, cross-connects, remote hands, applicable taxes and fees, price escalators, renewal terms, expansion, service remedies, termination and migration costs. |
| Deployment and growth | Availability for the required launch date, provisioning lead times, adjacent space and power, and the commercial and contractual terms for scaling. |
Judge resilience claims by scope, not by label
Uptime Institute describes Tier I through Tier IV as progressive infrastructure classifications: Tier I is basic capacity, Tier II adds redundant capacity components, Tier III is concurrently maintainable, and Tier IV is fault tolerant. The classifications help describe infrastructure capability, but they do not by themselves establish whether a site suits a particular workload. Uptime Institute explicitly cautions that a Tier IV site is not automatically better for every business than a Tier II site. Choose against your outage tolerance, workload requirements and budget, and consider operational sustainability and business-specific conditions as well as infrastructure topology. See Uptime Institute’s Tier classifications.
Also establish exactly what a provider means when it uses a Tier claim. It may refer to a design assessment, construction or an operating facility. Ask for the evidence and confirm which location and stage it covers. Uptime Institute describes certification as verification that the Tier Standard is applied to the relevant stage; its certification overview explains the scope. The same distinction matters for capacity and network claims: ask about the actual hall, cabinet, building and service in your proposal, rather than inferring availability from a provider-wide statement.

Uptime Institute defines its Tier III classification this way: “Each and every capacity component and distribution path in a site can be removed on a planned basis for maintenance or replacement without impacting operations.” That describes the classification; it is not a substitute for checking the certification status and scope of the specific facility you are considering.
Verify usable power, cooling and network access
Installed power capacity is not necessarily power available to your equipment. Ask the provider to state in writing what customer-available power it can commit in the proposed hall and cabinet, the density limit, how the commitment is measured and whether it is reserved or metered. Confirm whether the proposed configuration includes the feeds and redundancy your equipment requires, how backup power is arranged, and which planned maintenance activities could affect the service. Check that cooling is available at your intended rack density, not merely that the building has cooling infrastructure.
Network availability is similarly specific. Ask which named carriers and cloud connections are physically available in the building, whether paths are diverse in practice, and which connections can be ordered for your deployment. Confirm cross-connect provisioning lead times, one-time and recurring charges, and any provider restrictions. The CoreSite buyer checklist and viabandwidth procurement checklist include network and interconnection among the points to evaluate.

Check security, compliance and day-to-day operations
Ask for security and compliance evidence tied to the particular facility and service. Establish the report or certificate period, systems and locations in scope, exceptions and whether your organization can review evidence or audit under the proposed terms. Compare that scope with your actual obligations; a general compliance claim is not proof that a particular workload or customer requirement is covered.

Operational details can determine whether a facility works for your team after installation. Find out who runs the site and who receives incidents after hours. Review the access process for employees and visitors, delivery and equipment-handling procedures, change approvals and escalation routes. For remote hands, distinguish included tasks from billable work, ask how response times are measured, and obtain rates for tasks your staff may need. Read the operational procedures alongside the service description rather than assuming that a support label guarantees a particular action or response.
Normalize full-term cost before comparing proposals
There is no useful universal colocation price for this decision: cost depends on region, capacity, density, connectivity, service scope, contract term and currency. Compare quotes using identical assumptions and show one-time and recurring charges separately. A cabinet rate alone can omit material parts of the service or the cost of operating your workload.

- One-time items: setup, installation, cross-connect setup and other provisioning charges.
- Recurring facility and service items: space, reserved or metered power, connectivity or bandwidth, cross-connects, remote hands, and applicable taxes or fees.
- Contract and lifecycle items: escalators, renewal pricing, expansion charges, service remedies, termination charges and migration or exit work.
Make the comparison reflect expected utilization, the same contract duration, required connections and support, likely growth and a realistic exit scenario. Ask how renewal prices are set and whether added capacity is governed by a stated price or formula. The Eaton guide to choosing a colocation service provider, along with the Telstra and viabandwidth checklists, supports evaluating the service and contract rather than relying on a headline cabinet charge.

- Write a one-page requirements brief. Include equipment, rack footprint, sustained and peak power, required redundancy, network endpoints, compliance needs, geography, launch date and budget assumptions. Distinguish what must be available at day one from forecast growth.
- Screen by facility. Ask for the specification sheet and current availability at the exact site and hall. Do not treat provider-wide certification, carrier or security statements as proof for the proposed location.
- Send the same questions to every candidate. Request written answers and supporting evidence. Separate marketing statements from auditable records and contractual commitments.
- Tour or audit when justified. Review access and delivery procedures and ask to examine customer-available operating, security and maintenance evidence. Use the visit to resolve questions raised by the written proposal.
- Normalize proposals across the full term. Apply consistent assumptions for capacity, utilization, term, connectivity, support, growth and exit. Separate setup charges from recurring charges and identify terms that can change.
- Review the SLA and contract with technical and procurement stakeholders. Check what services are covered, how performance is measured, exclusions, maintenance windows, credits or other remedies, escalation, chronic-failure rights, renewal and termination obligations.
- Select against critical requirements and acceptable risk. Weigh documented capability, operational arrangements, contractual protection and full-term cost against the workload. A higher Tier or a more expensive proposal is not automatically the best fit.
RFP checklist: questions to send each provider
Use these questions in a common RFP or questionnaire so answers can be compared directly. Request facility-specific written responses, and ask providers to identify the document or contract language that supports each commitment.
- What customer-available power can you commit in the specific hall and cabinet, and what is the density limit?
- How are power feeds, backup systems and cooling arranged for this service? Which planned maintenance activities can affect the customer?
- Does your Tier statement refer to design assessment or certification? Which site and certification stage does the evidence cover?
- Which named carriers and cloud connections are physically available in this building? Are routes diverse, and what are cross-connect lead times and charges?
- What security and compliance evidence applies to this precise facility and service? What are the report period, scope and exceptions?
- Who operates the facility and responds after hours? Which remote-hands tasks are included, how are response times measured, and what are the rates?
- Which services does the SLA cover, how are they measured, what is excluded, and what remedies and escalation rights apply?
- What are all setup, power, cross-connect, bandwidth, remote-hands, renewal, expansion and exit costs over the contract term?
- What capacity can be added in the same location, on what lead time and at what contractual price or formula?
- What data-location, access, delivery and disaster-recovery requirements can this site meet?
Read the SLA and exit terms as part of the service
Do not infer service guarantees from infrastructure descriptions. In the proposed SLA, identify the covered services, measurement method, exclusions and maintenance windows. Determine how to report an incident, how escalation works and what remedy is available when a commitment is missed. Check whether credits are the only remedy, whether repeated failures create additional rights, and how any chronic-failure provision is defined. Treat each percentage or response target as a commitment only if it applies to the service you are buying and appears in the contract.
Best Value
Then read renewal, expansion and termination language together. Confirm notice periods, renewal mechanics and any price adjustment method; establish whether additional power, space or connections can actually be ordered on workable terms. Determine who is responsible for disconnecting equipment, moving it and arranging a new service, and what charges or access requirements apply. The provider-selection guidance from Telstra and viabandwidth also calls for evaluating SLA, support and contract obligations.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Choosing from a Tier label alone. A classification describes infrastructure capability, not every business, site or operational factor relevant to your workload.
- Assuming provider-wide claims apply to your facility. Verify the exact location, hall, service, certification stage, available carriers and security evidence.
- Comparing unlike quotes. Align assumptions for committed power, utilization, connectivity, support, contract term, growth and exit before treating prices as comparable.
- Ignoring lead times and operational procedures. Confirm availability by the target date, network provisioning time, access rules, delivery handling and remote-hands scope.
- Reading only the service summary. Check the SLA measurement rules, exclusions and remedies, plus renewal, chronic-failure, termination and migration provisions in the contract.
Make the decision against your real constraints
Choose the facility that meets mandatory workload and business requirements with evidence and contractual terms your organization can accept. Geography, legal obligations, local risks, network presence, power availability, certification scope and actual capacity are specific to the jurisdiction and facility; resolve them for each candidate rather than relying on generic claims. The right proposal is the one that fits the workload, deployment plan and acceptable risk over the whole contract—not necessarily the one with the highest label or lowest initial quote.
