How to Choose a Cloud Storage Plan for Photos, Videos, and Backups

Choose cloud storage by sizing your current photo library, videos, backups, and household needs against the provider’s shared quota, local price, and family-sharing rules.

Choose a cloud storage plan by checking how much space your photos, videos, and other files already use, how quickly that library is growing, and which services your household already relies on. Then compare plans at the capacity you need—not just the cheapest monthly price. In the US plan pages checked on October 4, 2026, Google, Apple, and Microsoft offer different free allowances, family-sharing arrangements, and bundled services.

How much cloud storage do you need for photos and videos?

Start with the storage your library uses now, then leave room for expected growth. Check the storage settings in your current photo service or device, and add the space taken by videos, existing backups, and other files that will use the same account. If you are moving a library, compare the source library’s actual size with the destination plan’s available space.

The headline capacity is not always reserved for photos. Google’s quota is shared across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so messages and files count against the same allowance. Apple describes iCloud storage for services including Photos and device Backup; check your actual iCloud usage before choosing a tier. Microsoft lists OneDrive storage, with some plans also bundling Microsoft 365 apps and services.

  • Check current usage across every service covered by the plan.
  • Estimate how much new photo and video content you add over a year.
  • Allow for backups and non-photo files rather than choosing a tier that only fits today’s photo library.
  • Compare the next available plan tier if your estimate is close to the limit.

What do the major plans cost?

The following are US prices displayed on official provider pages accessed October 4, 2026. Prices, plan names, and availability can differ by country and may change; verify the local provider page before subscribing.

Which cloud storage is best for family photos?

For a household, compare how storage is shared and what else comes with it. The plans are not structured identically: Google and Apple say their paid storage can be shared with up to five other people, while Microsoft’s Family plan provides up to six people with 1 TB each, up to 6 TB total.

Provider Sharing described on provider page Useful fit question
Google One Paid tiers can be shared with up to five others. Google One plans Does your household already use Google Photos, Drive, or Gmail?
Apple iCloud+ Plans can be shared with up to five family members. Apple says sharing is at no extra cost. iCloud+ plans Are your devices and photo workflow centered on Apple services?
Microsoft 365 Family Up to six people, with 1 TB per person and up to 6 TB total. OneDrive storage plans Would your household use the included Microsoft 365 apps as well as separate storage for each person?

For a fair comparison, count the storage each person needs and include the value of bundled apps only if your household would actually use them. A low storage-only price is not automatically the best overall value if it does not fit the family’s sharing needs.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black

Is iCloud or Google One better for photo storage?

Neither is a universal winner. Google is a natural fit if your photo library and everyday files already live in Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, but those services draw from one shared quota. iCloud+ is worth comparing if your household is already organized around Apple devices and iCloud Photos or Backup. Compare the actual capacity you need, account usage beyond photos, and the way family sharing works before deciding.

Plan pages do not provide a complete, standardized comparison of deletion recovery, encryption defaults, account recovery, or the scope of every device backup. Do not choose on a security or recovery assumption based only on the storage plan description; check the provider’s current documentation for your devices and region.

Can cloud storage back up your phone and computer?

Cloud services can sync or store photos and files, and provider pages describe some backup features, but the word “backup” alone does not establish that every device, app, or file type is covered. Microsoft advertises photo and file backup across devices; Apple describes iCloud photo storage and device backup. Verify the exact devices and data included in your setup.

How to choose a plan

  1. Measure your current usage. Check the storage dashboard for the account or device you plan to use, including files outside the photo library.
  2. Estimate future needs. Consider ongoing photo and video growth, backups, and whether other household members will share the plan.
  3. Match the plan to your ecosystem. Compare Google for a Google Photos/Drive/Gmail household, iCloud+ for an Apple-centered workflow, and Microsoft where OneDrive and Microsoft 365 fit how you work.
  4. Compare the relevant tier and full bundle. Use the provider table above, and count bundled apps only if they replace something you already need.
  5. Verify local terms and backup behavior. Plan pricing varies by country; Google has documented effective 2026 price changes in Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Türkiye. Confirm current local pricing and check support details for sharing, restore, and covered devices before relying on the service.
