Neither AI search nor conventional Google Search is best for every job. Use ordinary results when you need a particular page, direct links, or control over comparing sources. Use an AI Overview for a quick orientation when one appears, or AI Mode when a question benefits from a back-and-forth exploration. For consequential decisions, go to authoritative sources and verify the details rather than relying on a generated summary.
Choose by what you need to do
| Your task | Best starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Find a specific site, document, or exact page | Conventional Google results; use the Web filter when available | Try another phrasing if the page does not appear. The Web filter shows text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. Google Search Help |
| Get oriented on a broad question | An AI Overview, if Google shows one | Open its supporting links and compare claims with other results. Google says AI responses may include mistakes. Google Search Help |
| Explore a complicated topic with follow-up questions | AI Mode, if it is available to you | Inspect the linked sources and check that the feature is available for your account, region, language, and other eligibility conditions. Google Search Help |
| Compare nearby businesses or find a direct local fact | Regular Google Search | Confirm time-sensitive details, such as hours or availability, with the business or another official source. Google describes Search as surfacing information such as menus, distance, current busyness, delivery, and local weather. Google Search: Overview and Improvements |
| Make a medical, legal, financial, or safety decision | Authoritative sources directly, not a generated answer as the final word | Check the relevant official source or consult a qualified professional. The cost of an incorrect answer makes independent verification especially important. Google Search Help |
These are practical starting points, not a measured claim that one interface is always faster or more accurate. Search results can vary with the query, location, device, account state, and available features.

What “Google Search” and “AI search” mean here
Conventional Google results
Traditional results present links for you to open and assess. They are useful when you know what kind of source you want—such as a government page, a specific publication, or a product manual—or when you want to compare sources yourself. Google’s Web filter offers text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. Google Search Help
AI Overviews
AI Overviews are generated summaries within Google Search, not a separate search engine. Google says they may appear when its systems judge a generative summary particularly useful, such as for a question that benefits from information across sources. An Overview can include links for further reading, but the summary is not a substitute for checking those pages. Google’s warning is direct: “AI responses may include mistakes.” Google Search Help

AI Mode
AI Mode is a more conversational Search experience designed for deeper exploration and follow-up questions, with links to sources. Google documents capabilities such as advanced reasoning and interactive visual features, but access and limits can vary by region, language, age, account conditions, and subscription plan. Check Google’s current eligibility information rather than assuming that every user sees the same features. Google Search Help
What the evidence says about source differences and consistency
A study by Aggarwal and coauthors published for SIGIR 2026 compared conventional Google Search, AI Overviews, and Gemini across 14,212 queries, including 11,500 time-invariant benchmark queries. The authors report substantial differences among the sources surfaced by the products, and lower stability in generative search across repeated runs than in conventional results. They also report an average Jaccard similarity below 0.2 between retrieved source sets across the compared search surfaces. That is a study-specific measure of source overlap, not a score for answer quality or a universal reliability rating. Aggarwal et al., SIGIR 2026
The study’s abstract reports that 51.5% of representative real-user queries in its sample received AI Overviews above organic results. This is a finding for that study’s sample and method, not a current rate for every query or every user. The study is a bounded comparison of Google products; it does not show that all AI search services perform alike or that every generated answer is unreliable. Aggarwal et al., SIGIR 2026
How to check an AI search answer
- Open the cited pages. Read the source itself instead of treating the generated summary as proof.
- Compare independent sources. For a disputed or important point, check whether other credible results support it.
- Check dates and context. Confirm that the source applies to your location and situation and is current enough for the question.
- Use authoritative sources for high-stakes questions. Verify medical, legal, financial, and safety information with the relevant official source or a qualified professional.

Is AI search better than Google Search?
It depends on the task. Conventional results give you direct links and more control over choosing and comparing pages. AI Overviews can offer a quick synthesis, while AI Mode is suited to a question that calls for follow-up. No source cited here establishes a universal winner across all tasks, providers, locations, and users, or a comprehensive current accuracy ranking of AI search services. Choose the format that helps you do the work, then verify important claims at their sources.
