Start with the exact processor part number, including its speed grade. There is no clock frequency or reset circuit that is safe for every 8-bit computer: the CPU, memory, glue logic and peripherals must all meet their timing and electrical requirements. Choose a compatible clock source, then make sure reset stays asserted until the supply and clock meet the CPU’s startup requirements.
How do I choose a clock speed for an 8-bit computer?
Read the datasheet for the exact CPU, not just its family name. Confirm its maximum frequency, clock-input arrangement, voltage levels, loading and timing requirements. A family can include parts with different limits: the Philips Semiconductors 80C51-family datasheet, for example, lists certain variants with maxima up to 33 MHz and other variants with lower maxima. The CPU’s maximum frequency is only one constraint. The complete board must finish its read, write and control operations within the available timing windows. Include memory access time, logic propagation delays and any peripheral timing requirements when deciding whether a proposed clock is suitable. A CPU’s published maximum does not certify the rest of the board.
- Identify the clock interface. A processor may accept an external clock or require a crystal or resonator arrangement. Do not assume that a clock source that works with one 6502 or other 8-bit design will work with another processor.
- Check electrical compatibility. Confirm that the clock’s output levels, supply and loading suit the CPU input and the rest of the circuit.
- Check waveform timing. Verify the required duty cycle and other clock timing limits in the CPU datasheet. A clock that is slow enough can still be unsuitable if its waveform is wrong.
- Account for the whole system. Check the timing of memory, glue logic and peripherals at the frequency you plan to use.
Some CPUs allow very slow or stopped clocks; others impose minimum timing or oscillator requirements. Low frequency by itself does not make a clock source safe. The sources cited here do not establish one universally suitable speed for an unspecified 8-bit computer.

Which clock source should I use?
A fixed oscillator suits a stable, regular clock when its frequency and electrical characteristics match the CPU and board. A 555 timer can be useful for adjustable or experimental clocking, including slow operation, but its astable output may not have the duty cycle the CPU requires. The right choice depends on the processor’s input requirements and whether you value a steady operating clock or hands-on experimentation.

For a 6502 project, one build describes manual clocking, a variable 555 clock and a nominal 1 MHz canned oscillator as options. Treat those as choices in that project, not as specifications for every 6502. Check the exact processor’s clock input and the board’s timing before adopting any of them. Changing sources or stepping by hand
Manual stepping and source selection introduce timing hazards: switching can produce malformed or runt pulses that a CPU may interpret as clock edges. Debounce manual inputs, and use clock gating or source-selection logic that preserves valid timing. How do I add a power-on reset to a 6502?
Make reset establish a known start state, and release it only after the processor’s startup conditions are satisfied. The cited 6502 reset primer says to hold reset low for at least two full clock cycles and to begin counting those cycles only after a clean, stable clock is running. Check the exact device’s datasheet and revision before applying that guidance to a particular 6502-family part. 6502 reset primer

A reset circuit also has to cope with the board’s actual power-up behavior. As Dirk Grappendorf notes of power-up, “When a computer is powered up, the input voltage is rising slowly.” A circuit that works with a fast, clean supply rise may not release reset reliably with a slow ramp or brown-out.
555 one-shot example
One 6502 home-computer build uses a 555 one-shot to hold active-low reset after power-up and provide manual reset. Its author reports a reset-low interval of about 560 ms in that build. Push button with an RC network
A different 6502 project uses an active-low push button and capacitor to suppress bounce and slow reset release. Its stated values, 100 nF and 2.2 kΩ, give an RC time constant of 220 μs (τ = R × C). That figure describes the cited circuit; it does not establish that the reset pulse meets another CPU’s minimum width, voltage thresholds or supply-ramp requirements. If the board must start reliably with slow supply ramps or recover from brown-outs, evaluate a dedicated reset supervisor against the power supply’s behavior and the CPU datasheet. Specialized reset controllers exist, but the examples cited here do not establish or compare a particular part.

How to validate the design
- Record the exact parts. Note the CPU part number and speed grade, memory, logic and peripherals, along with their supply voltages.
- Set the clock limits. Use the processor and other component datasheets to check frequency, clock input, voltage levels, duty cycle and timing requirements.
- Choose the source and any shaping logic. Confirm that the source works electrically with the CPU and produces a valid waveform, including during manual stepping or clock switching.
- Check startup and reset together. Ensure the clock is stable when reset timing begins, and that reset remains asserted for the particular CPU’s required interval and voltage conditions.
- Consider supply faults. If slow ramps or brown-outs matter, check whether the reset design handles them; assess a suitable supervisor if necessary.
