Choose an electronic chessboard by first confirming that its exact model works with the chess app or online platform you intend to use. A USB or Bluetooth connection by itself does not guarantee that a board can connect to Chess.com or Lichess: the board, companion software, and platform must support the same integration route.
Start with the platform you want to play on
Before comparing materials or connectivity, check the board’s exact model against the platform’s current compatibility instructions. Look for the required companion app or software, whether an account must be authorized, and whether a particular connection or API mode must be selected.

For Lichess, the board must use its official Board API. Lichess currently lists DGT boards, ChessUp 2, iChessOne, and Chessnut boards using Chessnut’s Board API option as compliant integrations. Chessnut’s Vision mode has a narrower stated use; do not assume that another mode works for Lichess. Lichess warns that noncompliant integration can result in account bans, so check its current e-board guidance and your board’s software settings before playing.

Check time-control support
Lichess’s e-board guidance allows rapid, classical, and correspondence games. Blitz is limited to direct challenges, AI games, or bulk pairing challenges. If you mainly play blitz, verify that your intended pairing method is supported rather than assuming every game type works.

Do not assume third-party sites work the same way
Setup can vary by platform. DGT’s USB e-Board manual describes online play through PlayChess after installing Fritz and DGT drivers, and notes that setup differs across other chess sites. Treat compatibility as a specific board-software-platform combination, not a general property of having an electronic board.
Choose USB, Bluetooth, or both

Check the pieces and what is in the box
Electronic boards do not all recognize pieces in the same way, and pieces are not always included. Before buying, confirm whether you need a specific set, whether the board is sold alone, and whether the listing includes the pieces, cable, or other accessories needed for your setup.

Board dimensions and square size affect how the board fits on a desk and how it feels to play. Compare the product’s measurements with your available space, and consider whether the board is for a permanent home setup or needs to be portable.

Decide which play modes matter
An e-board may be intended for online games, local two-player play, built-in opponents, or teaching and move-feedback features. Check which of those functions the model actually provides, and whether each requires an internet connection, an account, or a companion app.
