The cheapest phone plan for you is the one that covers your actual data use and works where you need it, at its ongoing total price—not just its advertised introductory rate. Current examples include US Mobile Light with 2GB for $8 per month, Tello with 2GB for $10, Mint Mobile with 6GB at an introductory $15-per-month equivalent, and Visible’s entry plan at $25. Treat these as dated price snapshots, not guaranteed checkout prices; plans and promotions can change.

How to compare plans by real monthly cost
Separate introductory pricing from the regular rate
Compare what you will pay after any promotion ends. Mint’s 6GB offer, for example, works out to $15 per month for the first three months, but requires $45 upfront and lists a regular monthly price of $25. Annualize any required advance payment and consider whether you can comfortably pay it at once.

Add taxes and fees
Mint says taxes and fees are extra. Google Fi says taxes and government surcharges vary by service address and are normally 10–20%. US Mobile’s comparison says most prepaid carriers include these costs but notes exceptions. Review the plan’s broadband facts label and the final checkout total rather than comparing headline prices alone.
How much data do you need?
Start with your typical monthly use, especially mobile data used away from Wi-Fi. If you mostly connect to Wi-Fi, a small allowance may be enough. If you stream video or use a hotspot while away from Wi-Fi, compare the high-speed allowance and hotspot terms—not just whether a plan is called “unlimited.”
For example, Google Fi lists Unlimited Essentials at $60 per month for two lines, with 30GB of high-speed data per person before speeds drop to 256 kbps. That is a two-line price, so it should not be compared directly with the one-line prices above. Google Fi’s Flexible plan is $35 per month for two lines, plus $10 per GB of data; taxes and government surcharges vary by service address. Google Fi plan details

A network name or coverage map cannot guarantee reception inside your home, at work, or along your regular route. Check the carrier’s coverage map for the specific places that matter to you. If the carrier offers a way to test service, use it before porting your number so you can check coverage without committing to a switch.

Read the data, hotspot, and roaming terms
Look for the high-speed data threshold, what happens when you reach it, hotspot limits, and roaming or international-use rules. Mint’s official page says customers on unlimited plans who exceed 50GB may notice reduced speeds in some busy locations; it lists up to 20GB of hotspot. These details can matter more than an “unlimited” label if you regularly tether a laptop or travel.
