Choose a caramel protein drink by checking the serving size, protein source, sugars, calories, sodium and full allergen statement—not by protein grams or flavor name alone. The examples below have different serving bases and come from listings for the US, France and Australia, so use them as label-reading examples and verify the package sold where you live.
Start with the serving you will actually drink
Compare nutrition per complete container when you expect to drink the whole container. If labels use different serving sizes, convert them to the same volume or compare the per-100-ml values where available. Keep the serving basis beside every number: a per-100-ml figure is not directly comparable with a full-bottle figure.

| Manufacturer-listed product and market | Serving basis | Protein | Calories | Sugars | Sodium or salt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Protein Caramel Protein Shake (US listing) | 11.5 fl oz shake | 30 g | 160 | 1 g total; 0 g added | 350 mg sodium |
| Quest Salted Caramel Protein Shake (US listing) | 325 ml shake | 30 g | 170 | 1 g total; 0 g added | 380 mg sodium |
| Alpro caramel coffee high-protein drink (France listing) | 100 ml; 250 ml package listed | 6 g per 100 ml | 72 kcal per 100 ml | 4.9 g per 100 ml | 0.15 g salt per 100 ml |
These are manufacturer label declarations, not results from an independent comparison. The US shake listings show 30 g protein per container, but the containers differ in volume and their other listed values differ too. Alpro reports values per 100 ml; multiply those figures by 2.5 to estimate the amount in its listed 250 ml package, provided you drink the whole package. That yields 15 g protein, 180 kcal, 12.25 g sugars and 0.375 g salt based on the listed per-100-ml values; this is a calculation, not a separate package-label claim. Salt and sodium are different label measures, so do not compare them as if they were the same unit.
Check whether the protein source fits your diet
Ingredients tell you more than the caramel or salted-caramel flavor name. The Premier Protein listing includes milk protein concentrate and calcium caseinate; Quest lists milk protein concentrate and isolate. Both US listings declare milk and soy. They are not dairy-free options.

Alpro’s France-listed caramel coffee drink is described by its manufacturer as plant-based and dairy-free, and its ingredients include a soy base and pea protein. Plant-based does not mean free of common allergens: this product contains soy. For a non-dairy choice, check the exact ingredient list and allergen statement rather than relying on a front-label claim.
Do not equate lactose suitability with dairy-free
Nestlé Medical Hub describes Boost High Protein Caramel Nutritional Drink as suitable for lactose intolerance and gluten-free, while listing milk protein concentrate and soy protein isolate. That manufacturer wording does not make it milk-protein-free or dairy-free. Lactose intolerance and milk-protein allergy are different concerns; if you must avoid milk protein, look for milk ingredients and the milk allergen declaration on the exact product.

Read the complete label for allergens and other dietary claims
Check the ingredient list and allergen declaration on the package you are buying, especially if you have an allergy or a medically restricted diet. Product pages and packages can differ by country or change over time. A claim such as gluten-free, vegan or lactose-free addresses only what the manufacturer states; it does not establish suitability for every dietary need.

The Quest page also displays gluten-free and kosher marks. Treat these as claims about that US listing, not as a substitute for checking the specific package or confirming whether its certification meets your requirements.

Look beyond protein: sugars, calories and sodium
Use the nutrition panel to compare the whole drink against your own priorities. On the cited US listings, Premier reports 160 calories, 1 g total sugar, 0 g added sugar and 350 mg sodium per 11.5 fl oz shake; Quest reports 170 calories, 1 g total sugar, 0 g added sugar and 380 mg sodium per 325 ml shake. Alpro’s France listing reports 72 kcal and 4.9 g sugars per 100 ml, so its figures need to be scaled to the amount consumed before comparison.
For context, the Premier page says: “Use this product as a food supplement only. Do not use for weight reduction.” This is the manufacturer’s instruction for its listed product, not a general claim about protein drinks.

Distinguish ready-to-drink shakes from powders and specialist products
Powder to mix
Shaklee Life Shake Salted Caramel is a plant-protein powder, not a ready-to-drink beverage. Its label lists a blend of pea, organic chia seed and organic pumpkin seed proteins, with 20 g protein per serving, and claims gluten-free and vegan. The label’s publication date is not stated, and a prepared drink’s final nutrition depends on what it is mixed with; compare its powder serving separately from ready-to-drink containers.

Flavour Creations Caramel Flavoured 15g Protein Thickened Drink is described by its manufacturer as dairy-free, lactose-free, gluten-, soy- and nut-free. It is identified as a food for special medical purposes, not a routine consumer shake. The manufacturer states, “Not suitable as a sole source of nutrition.” Do not select a thickened product for dysphagia or another medical need without guidance from an appropriately qualified professional.

Make the choice using your actual constraint
- Avoiding dairy: inspect ingredients and allergen declarations for milk. The cited Premier and Quest drinks contain milk ingredients; Alpro’s listed example is plant-based but contains soy.
- Managing lactose intolerance: read the product’s specific lactose statement, but do not infer that it is free of milk protein. Boost’s listing illustrates the distinction.
- Managing an allergy: verify the current package’s full ingredients and allergen statement. Do not rely on flavor wording or a broad claim such as plant-based.
- Comparing nutrition: align serving volumes, then compare protein, total and added sugars, calories, and sodium or salt using the label’s stated units.
- Considering a powder or thickened drink: compare it only on its own stated serving basis and account for preparation or specialized use.
Manufacturer listings cited here cover the US, France and Australia; names, formulations, labeling, certifications and availability can vary by market. Product details may also change. For allergies, medically restricted diets or specialized nutrition, check the exact current package and consult an appropriately qualified professional; the product listings alone do not establish individual medical suitability.
