Choose a camera bag by measuring the camera-and-lens setup you actually carry, then checking whether the bag can hold the rest of your kit and everyday items without compromising access or comfort. Liters alone cannot tell you whether your gear will fit.
Start with the gear and daily items you carry
Make a short list of the equipment you take on a normal outing: camera body, the lens usually attached, your longest alternate lens, and frequently used accessories. Add anything that must share the bag, such as a phone, keys, wallet, water bottle, laptop, lunch, or an extra layer. A camera-capacity figure does not tell you whether these personal items will fit beside padded compartments.

Next, measure the largest camera-and-lens combination. Record its length, width, and height, then compare those measurements with the bag’s usable interior dimensions. Lowepro’s fit guidance recommends using the largest combination to eliminate bags that are too small, and checking the arrangement of the rest of the kit against the interior dimensions.

Think about how the camera must sit in the bag. If you want to remove it through a side opening, it may need to lie horizontally; if it can stand upright, a deeper compartment may let you store lenses vertically. Check that the dividers can separate and secure the equipment in that arrangement.

Interior and exterior dimensions matter more than a liter rating when you are checking a specific fit. Padding and dividers take up space, so two bags with similar outside dimensions can have different usable capacities. Lowepro illustrates this with a fully padded 25 L bag and an unpadded 35 L bag that are about the same size externally. Where possible, take your gear to a camera shop and try the fit. Otherwise, check the manufacturer’s precise interior measurements and whether the opening works with your intended camera orientation.
Choose a bag style around access, load, and journey

These are workflow choices, not a universal ranking. Compare each candidate for fit, space for essentials, speed and direction of access, protection, comfort at the loaded weight, and travel dimensions. Match protection and comfort to the conditions
Padded dividers help protect equipment from knocks and keep it organized. Consider how the bag handles rain, but do not treat weather resistance or a rain cover as proof that a bag is waterproof. For time around water, REI advises considering an additional waterproof bag or hard case.
Try the bag with the weight and arrangement you expect to carry, if possible. A compact kit that is easy to reach may suit a shoulder bag or sling; for a larger load, carrying support and comfort over the distance matter more. Confirm that the dividers hold the gear securely without blocking access to the camera or essentials.

Check the packed exterior dimensions for air travel
If you plan to carry the bag onto a plane, compare its packed exterior dimensions with the airline’s current cabin-baggage rules. Include anything attached outside, such as a tripod or bottle, because it changes the bag’s effective profile. Check the carrier directly, particularly for low-cost and regional airlines: requirements vary and can change. Lowepro’s fit advice likewise distinguishes the packed outside dimensions from the interior space used to fit equipment.

The Lowepro ProTactic SH 120 AW is one dimensioned example for a compact mirrorless setup. Lowepro lists interior dimensions of 23 × 11 × 18 cm, exterior dimensions of 27.7 × 14.7 × 20 cm, and a weight of 0.8 kg. The manufacturer says it fits a mirrorless camera with a lens attached, one or two extra lenses or flashes, a smartphone, spare memory, small accessories, and personal items; the product page also lists an All Weather cover. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent fit tests. Compare your own equipment measurements with the interior dimensions before buying, and check that your preferred arrangement works. If you prefer your existing everyday bag, a pouch or insert can add protection for a smaller kit. Lowepro’s pouch and case guide describes carrying compact cameras and small items such as batteries and memory cards in a pouch inside a larger bag. Check that the camera cannot bounce around and that the closure is not strained by a tight fit.
