Start with that game’s recommended or medium preset at your display’s resolution, then adjust image quality, frame rate, audio, and comfort controls based on what the game supports and what feels right to you.
Start with a stable baseline
Choose the game’s recommended preset, set your intended display resolution, and try a representative dark or effects-heavy scene. If performance is not steady enough for you, lower demanding options before adding visual effects. Use the game’s own published performance tiers as a guide rather than assuming one frame-rate target suits every player.

For example, PlayStation’s Until Dawn PC specifications list 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium as the recommended tier. The same title’s published tiers range from 720p at 30 FPS on Low to 4K at 60 FPS on Ultra. Those are publisher targets for Until Dawn, not universal requirements or independent benchmark results.

Resolution and preset quality
Higher resolutions and quality presets can require more capable hardware. If your chosen resolution does not run smoothly, try a lower preset or resolution and assess the result in the same scene. Different games expose different presets and target different hardware, so consult the specifications for the title you are playing.

Ray tracing
Ray tracing can add effects such as more detailed shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion, but it is optional and can carry a substantial performance cost. PlayStation lists ray-traced shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion for Until Dawn. Its Returnal PC specifications include a separate, demanding ray-tracing configuration; PlayStation recommends performance-enhancing upscaling when ray-traced reflections and shadows are enabled. Keep ray tracing on only if the visual difference matters to you and performance remains acceptable.
Upscaling and frame generation
If native rendering misses your performance goal, check whether the game supports an upscaler before reducing every graphics option. Until Dawn’s PC specifications list DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.1 support, including frame generation on supported hardware. These are features of that game’s implementation, not guarantees about other horror games. Check the game’s menu and current documentation for available modes, and compare them in a scene you can reproduce.

Set up audio using the game’s supported modes
Start in the game’s audio menu and verify which output modes it supports. Spatial audio is not automatic: the game, operating-system output, and selected in-game preset may all need to match.

Motion blur and field of view
If motion blur makes play uncomfortable, try reducing or turning it off. Bethesda’s Redfall settings guide documents motion blur and field-of-view controls, and notes that a higher field of view can affect performance and graphics quality. Adjust FOV gradually: a wider view may suit you, but it is not a free performance change.

Brightness, contrast, and subtitles
Adjust brightness and contrast on your own display until dark scenes remain legible without washing out the image. There is no single ideal value across monitors and rooms. Enable subtitles if they help you follow dialogue or improve accessibility. The Redfall guide also documents subtitle font scaling, screen narration, and colorblind filters; EA’s Dead Space initial-settings guide lists subtitles, menu narration, voice language, and content warnings. Options vary by game.

Where available, adjust music, effects, dialogue, and cinematic audio separately. Redfall documents individual sliders for those categories. Lowering music or raising dialogue can help make speech easier to follow, while effects can remain audible; choose levels that suit your hearing, environment, and preference.
A practical tuning order
- Load the recommended or medium preset. Set the resolution you intend to use and test a representative scene.
- Stabilize performance. If play is not smooth enough for you, reduce costly settings or resolution before enabling extra effects.
- Test optional visual features. Compare ray tracing or supported upscaling individually, keeping only settings whose result is worth their cost.
- Configure audio modes. Check the game’s supported output, enable any required system spatial-sound mode, and select the matching in-game preset.
- Make comfort adjustments. Tune motion blur, field of view, brightness, contrast, subtitles, and audio levels to your needs.
Change one setting at a time and revisit the same scene where possible. That makes it easier to tell whether an option improved the experience or introduced a performance, visibility, or comfort problem.
