How to Choose a Bluetooth Tracker for Keys, Bags, and Luggage

The right Bluetooth tracker depends first on your phone. Compare Apple AirTag, Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, and Tile by network, range limits, battery, and how they attach to keys or luggage.

Start with your phone: AirTag (2nd generation) is designed for Apple’s Find My network, Galaxy SmartTag2 uses Samsung SmartThings Find, and Tile trackers use Tile/Life360 services. Then check whether your phone supports the locating features you want, how the tracker attaches, and what its battery requires. No Bluetooth tracker provides guaranteed live GPS tracking: when it is out of your phone’s Bluetooth range, finding it depends on compatible nearby devices detecting it through the product’s network.

Which Bluetooth tracker works with your phone?

Choose the ecosystem before comparing advertised range or battery life. A tracker’s out-of-range finding depends on its own network, so another brand’s nearby devices generally do not substitute for the network it uses.

Tracker Network and setup Range and precision Battery and attachment
Apple AirTag (2nd generation) Uses Apple Find My. Apple says nearby Apple devices can detect its Bluetooth signal; Apple describes the network as having more than a billion devices, a company-reported figure rather than an independently verified count. Apple AirTag Improved Precision Finding is available only with specified iPhone models, and feature availability varies by region. Check the current AirTag specifications against your exact phone. Apple says a standard replaceable battery lasts more than a year; actual life varies with use, environment, and battery manufacturer. A separate key ring or holder may be needed. Apple AirTag
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 Uses SmartThings Find. A Samsung account and device registration are required; network-assisted finding uses participating Galaxy devices. Samsung’s US announcement Samsung states a maximum Bluetooth range of 120 metres. This is a maximum specification, not a guaranteed usable distance. Samsung’s US announcement Samsung advertises up to 500 days based on internal testing with simulated typical use. Its metal loop accommodates clips and key rings. Tile Bluetooth tracker Uses Tile/Life360 services. Confirm the specific model’s phone compatibility before buying. Life360: How Tile Works Life360 lists 100–500 feet across Tile models, not as a single model’s guaranteed range. Check the exact model. Life360: How Tile Works Battery type, replaceability, and attachment needs vary by model; confirm them in that model’s current product information. The cited general Tile information does not establish the details for every tracker.

For an iPhone

AirTag is the direct match if you want a tracker integrated with Apple Find My. Before relying on Precision Finding, verify that your particular iPhone model is listed as supported and that the feature is available in your region. Apple’s product page describes the tracker’s Bluetooth signal being detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. Apple AirTag

For a Samsung Galaxy phone

SmartTag2 is the ecosystem match for SmartThings Find, subject to Samsung account setup and registration. Samsung says the Galaxy Find Network can use other Galaxy devices to help locate a tag; that report depends on compatible devices being nearby. Samsung’s US announcement

For other phones or a Tile user

Tile may fit if its particular model supports your phone and your intended use. Do not assume every Tile model has the same range, battery arrangement, or attachment method. Confirm those details for the exact model rather than treating Tile as one uniform device. Life360: How Tile Works

How far away can you find keys or a bag?

There are two different cases: a nearby Bluetooth connection and a location update relayed by the wider finding network. The first helps when your phone is close enough to connect to the tracker. The second may help when you and the item are apart, but it depends on other compatible devices detecting the tracker and participating in the network.

  • Nearby: Bluetooth connection distance varies with walls, interference, the tracker’s position inside a bag, and other surroundings. Samsung’s 120-metre figure is explicitly a maximum; Tile’s 100–500-foot span covers multiple models. These figures come from different product claims and are not controlled, directly comparable test results. Samsung Life360
  • Out of range: A participating device in the tracker’s supported network may detect its Bluetooth signal and report a location. Updates are conditional, not continuous or guaranteed to arrive immediately.

For luggage, this makes a tracker a way to improve the chance of locating a misplaced bag, not a live GPS map or a promise of recovery. Apple’s statement that its Find My network includes more than a billion devices describes Apple’s network scale; it does not establish how quickly a particular lost item will be reported. What should you check for keys, bags, and luggage?

Keys: secure attachment

Check whether the tracker has a built-in loop or requires a separate key ring or holder. SmartTag2 has a metal loop for clips and key rings. AirTag may need a separate key-ring accessory to attach securely. For any accessory, confirm fit with the exact tracker model. Samsung attachment guidance Apple AirTag

  • USE WITH LIFE360: Track everything—and everyone you love—a top family connection and safety app. Add your Tiles to see all you love on one map

Bags and luggage: placement and access

Choose an attachment that keeps the tracker secure and makes it accessible when you need to check or replace its battery. A bag’s contents and shell can affect Bluetooth connection, so avoid assuming a published maximum range will hold when a tracker is buried inside luggage. If you use a holder, verify it is made for the model you buy.

Battery: compare claims carefully

Apple says AirTag works for more than a year on a standard replaceable battery and notes that actual battery life varies with usage, environmental conditions, and battery manufacturer. Samsung advertises up to 500 days for SmartTag2 based on internal testing and simulated typical usage. Those claims use different stated conditions and do not establish a head-to-head battery-life winner. Apple AirTag Samsung’s US announcement

Privacy and responsible use

Apple describes Find My as privacy-protective and says AirTag uses a secure Bluetooth signal. Samsung says SmartTag2 location is available with user permission. These vendor descriptions are not a complete independent comparison of unwanted-tracking protections. Review the current platform settings and unwanted-tracking alert documentation for the devices you use, and do not use a tracker to monitor a person without their consent.
