For cold storage, initialize a new wallet on the hardware device, secure and verify its recovery backup offline, then send bitcoin to it. Restoring a phrase first created on a phone or computer does not erase the phrase’s earlier exposure risk.
What a hardware wallet does—and what it does not
A hardware wallet keeps the keys used to authorize Bitcoin transactions in a specialized device. You connect or otherwise interact with it when signing; the device does not eliminate your responsibility to protect the recovery material that can restore access to the wallet.

Cold storage is a process, not a product label. Its security depends on how the wallet is initialized, how transactions are approved, and how recovery information is handled. The selection criteria below are more useful than treating any single feature as a guarantee.

Transaction review on the device
Check whether the wallet has a display that shows transaction details and requires an on-device confirmation. Reviewing the transaction on the device gives you an opportunity to check what it is being asked to sign. A companion app may help create or manage transactions, but its information and the device’s approval are separate parts of the workflow. Bitcoin.org’s Trezor Safe 3 listing, accessed 2026-10-09, documents on-device transaction confirmation.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Firmware transparency and physical protections
Look at source-code availability, whether builds are deterministic or reproducible, and what physical key-protection design is used. These properties address different questions: publicly inspectable source and reproducible builds can support scrutiny, while a secure element or another device-level approach addresses physical threats. None of them alone establishes that a wallet is secure for every user or threat model.
For example, Bitcoin.org describes the Safe 3 as having open-source firmware and an EAL6+ certified Secure Element. Its BitBox02 listing, accessed 2026-10-09, says its source code is public and builds are deterministic; it also distinguishes device protections from validation, privacy, and fee controls provided by companion software. These are documented product characteristics, not independent performance or security-test results.

Connectivity and operating workflow
Decide whether you need USB, Bluetooth, QR-camera signing, removable storage, or an air-gapped workflow. More connection choices may be convenient, but they can also add steps and operational complexity. Select a method you can use consistently and verify rather than assuming that more options automatically mean better security. Blockstream’s Jade product page, accessed 2026-10-09, describes USB, Bluetooth, camera/QR, and SD-card or USB-drive workflows for Jade devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBitcoin compatibility
Confirm compatibility across the exact device, companion wallet software, address formats, and any multisig setup you intend to use. Support can vary across services: Bitcoin.org notes that some services do not support every address format, including newer formats such as Taproot’s Bech32m. Compatibility at the hardware-wallet level does not guarantee that an exchange or other service can send to or receive from every format.

Recovery and backup usability
Before choosing a device, understand its backup format and how you would restore it if the device were lost or damaged. Check that you can verify the backup and store it offline, and that you understand any additional wallet configuration needed for restoration. A recovery phrase is highly sensitive: avoid photos and online storage, and do not type it into another device except during a genuine recovery.
Blockstream’s Jade setup instructions, accessed 2026-10-09, warn: “Your recovery phrase grants access to your wallet. Never enter it on another device except for emergency situations.” They also advise writing the phrase down, protecting it offline, and verifying the backup.

Set up cold storage with a fresh wallet
A newly initialized hardware wallet and a hardware wallet restored from an existing software-wallet phrase do not have the same security history. If the phrase was created on a phone or computer, it may already have been exposed; moving it to a hardware device does not undo that possibility. Blockstream’s Jade instructions recommend creating a new wallet for cold storage and transferring funds to it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Initialize a new wallet directly on the hardware device, following the manufacturer’s setup procedure.
- Write down the recovery phrase and verify the backup using the device’s instructions. Keep it offline; do not photograph it or store it online.
- Store the recovery material somewhere protected and separate from the hardware device. If using a metal backup plate for durability against physical damage, confirm that its format matches the wallet’s recovery phrase. A plate does not protect a phrase that was exposed earlier.
- Use the wallet and companion software to obtain a receiving address, then verify the address through the hardware-wallet workflow before sending funds.
- Send bitcoin to the new wallet. For a large transfer, a small initial transfer can help confirm that the address and recovery setup work before moving the remaining funds.
When multisig makes sense
Multisig distributes signing authority across multiple keys, which can reduce reliance on any one key. It also adds setup, documentation, privacy, and recovery demands. Choose it only if you can maintain and test the complete policy, including the signers and configuration needed to reconstruct the wallet.

Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 129 (BIP 129), published 2020-11-10, describes a standardized process for sharing and checking a multisig configuration. Its checks include confirming that each signer’s key appears in the descriptor, reviewing the M-of-N policy, and verifying the first wallet address and that participants see the same confirmation. A modified configuration could redirect funds; disclosure of keys or configuration can also harm privacy.
- Verify each signer key against the shared descriptor.
- Check the policy parameters, including the M-of-N threshold.
- Confirm the first receiving address and ensure all participants see the same configuration confirmation.
- Document and test how the complete arrangement can be recovered before relying on it for funds.

A practical decision checklist
- Can you review transaction details on the device and physically approve the signing action?
- Can you assess the firmware and understand the device’s physical key-protection approach without treating either as a guarantee?
- Do you know how to restore the wallet and have a verified offline backup in a format you can maintain?
- Does the full device-and-software setup support your planned address formats, service interactions, and multisig needs?
- Can you carry out the chosen connection and recovery workflow without improvising or exposing the recovery phrase?
Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet selection guide, accessed 2026-10-09, provides broader criteria for evaluating devices and compatibility. Specifications, firmware, compatibility, and listed prices can change, so confirm current documentation for the exact device and software versions you intend to use.
