The easiest backup drive to live with is one that connects to your computer, works with the backup app you plan to use, and fits a routine you can repeat. Before buying, check the computer’s ports and backup-software requirements; then weigh capacity, HDD versus SSD, and how you will protect and restore the backup.
Start with your computer and backup method
Choose the backup workflow before choosing a drive. A drive that plugs in is not automatically a suitable destination for every backup feature, so check the software’s requirements as well as the connector.

- On a Mac: Apple says Time Machine can use an external storage device connected to a compatible Mac port, including USB-C or Thunderbolt. Check that the drive and cable match the ports on your Mac. Apple’s Time Machine disk guidance also describes network-attached storage as another possible destination.
- On Windows: Microsoft lists external or network storage as possible backup destinations. Confirm that the Windows backup method you intend to use supports your chosen drive and format. See Microsoft’s Windows backup options.
Write down the computer’s available ports, the drive’s connector, and any cable or adapter you would need. A setup that requires a missing adapter or an unsupported backup format can turn a simple routine into a recurring hassle.
Choose capacity for the files and history you want to keep
Estimate the size of the files you want backed up and decide how much backup history you want the software to retain. A drive needs room for more than just the files you have today if your backup method keeps older versions or snapshots.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
There is no universal capacity figure that fits every computer and backup plan. Check the space currently used on the computer, account for the kinds of files you expect to add, and consult the backup app’s storage guidance. If the drive fills quickly, you may have to prune history or replace it sooner; if it is much larger than your needs, you may be paying for space you do not use.
Decide whether an HDD or SSD fits your priorities
External hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) are both plausible backup storage choices. Compare the models available to you by capacity, price, portability, connector, and stated compatibility rather than assuming one category is best for everyone.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
| Choice | What to weigh | What this guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| External HDD | Whether its available capacity and price suit your files and budget, and whether its size and connection work for your routine. | Microsoft lists HDDs among storage options for Storage Spaces, but that is a separate Windows feature—not a general ranking of backup-drive performance. Microsoft’s Storage Spaces information describes that feature. |
| External SSD | Whether its price, capacity, portability, connector, and compatibility meet your needs. | Microsoft also lists SSDs for Storage Spaces. The cited guidance does not establish a controlled consumer comparison of SSD and HDD speed, lifespan, or impact resistance. |
Do not buy on a durability or speed assumption that the manufacturer’s product specifications and your use case have not substantiated. For an ordinary backup, compatibility and a repeatable process matter more than declaring either drive type a universal winner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep specialized features from complicating a simple backup
Windows Storage Spaces is optional and is not required for ordinary external-drive backups. Microsoft notes that a USB drive can work in File Explorer yet fail to appear as an eligible disk for Storage Spaces. If you specifically plan to use Storage Spaces, verify eligibility for that feature before buying; otherwise, do not treat its disk requirements as the requirements for every backup.

Make security and recovery part of the purchase
A backup may contain the same private information as the computer it protects. Consider whether you need encryption, how you will store its recovery key or password, and whether the drive can remain disconnected when it is not being updated. CISA advises offline, encrypted backups and regular testing of backup procedures in its #StopRansomware Guide.
- Encryption: If you encrypt the drive, make sure you know how to unlock it on the computer you will use for recovery.
- Recovery credentials: Keep the recovery key or password somewhere secure and accessible to you. CISA advises safeguarding recovery keys and passwords; a locked backup that you cannot unlock is not useful in a recovery.
- Offline storage: Disconnect the external drive when it is not actively backing up, where your workflow allows. CISA says this can reduce exposure to threats on a connected computer. See CISA’s advice on protecting data stored on devices.
- Restore testing: Confirm that you can recover files from the backup instead of assuming that a drive containing visible files is a working backup.
Set up a routine you can repeat
- Check the connection: Match the computer’s port to the drive’s connector and obtain any cable or adapter the setup requires.
- Confirm software support: Check the backup utility’s destination and formatting requirements before preparing the drive. Use the instructions for your operating system and backup method.
- Configure the backup: Select the external drive as the destination and choose what to protect and how much history to retain, where those options are available.
- Run a backup and verify it completed: Follow the backup app’s status rather than relying only on the drive appearing in the file browser.
- Try a restore: Recover a test file to a safe location and open it. This checks the practical path from backup to usable file.
- Disconnect and store the drive securely: Once the backup is complete, keep it offline when it is not in use if that suits your workflow, and retain any recovery credentials safely.
Repeat the backup on a schedule you can maintain, and test recovery periodically. CISA recommends regularly testing backup procedures; the useful test is whether you can restore what you need, not merely whether the drive is detected.
