How to Choose a Backend for React Forms: Functions or a Form Service?

A React form needs a backend or hosted endpoint to receive submissions. Learn when custom serverless logic, a managed form service, or Netlify Forms fits best.

A React form needs somewhere reliable to send its submission. Choose a serverless function when you need custom validation, routing, or application-specific processing and are prepared to maintain the backend. Choose a form service when its hosted endpoint and workflow cover what you need and you prefer less backend implementation. If your site is already on Netlify, Netlify Forms offers a platform-managed intake path that can also trigger a Netlify Function for follow-up work.

What happens after a React form is submitted?

React builds the form interface; it does not, by itself, provide a reliable destination for the submitted data. A client-side submit handler can collect values, but a backend or hosted endpoint must receive and validate the request, then deliver or store it. For a contact form that should send an email, for example, the submission needs a server-side path to an email workflow or another destination.

The choice is about ownership as much as code: with a function, your team implements and operates request handling and downstream work. With a form service, the provider supplies an endpoint and some workflow features, subject to its product and plan. Neither approach removes the need to decide what data to accept, where it should go, and how long to retain it.

Serverless function or form service: how do they differ?

Decision area Serverless function Form service or platform forms
Implementation and maintenance Your team writes, deploys, and maintains request handling and downstream processing. Use the provider’s endpoint or platform handling, then configure its available workflow and integrations.
Validation and workflow Code can implement application-specific rules and routing; your team owns that logic. Capabilities vary by vendor and plan. Confirm the service supports your validation and workflow needs.
Spam and file uploads You choose and operate spam protections and upload handling. Some services advertise these features. Check their exact limits and configuration.
Data and retention You design storage, access controls, and deletion policies in your stack. Review storage location, access, retention, export, deletion, and treatment of sensitive files.
Deployment fit Requires a platform that supports functions and fits your deployment workflow. A third-party endpoint can be separate from your site host; platform-native forms may depend on how the site is built.
Cost and portability Include function usage, storage, email or integration services, and engineering time. Request and workflow code can move, though provider APIs may still matter. Check submission and storage limits, plan changes, fees, export options, and migration dependencies.

When a serverless function is the better fit

Use a function when the submission must follow rules or routes specific to your application—for example, validating fields against internal requirements, choosing a destination based on submitted data, or connecting an established backend workflow. The function gives your team a place to implement that behavior on the server rather than trusting browser-only logic.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That control comes with operational ownership. Your team must implement the handler, deploy and monitor it, protect it, and maintain any email, CRM, storage, or other integrations it calls. Netlify describes its functions as project code that responds to requests or events, is version controlled, and deploys with the site; see Netlify Functions.

  • Choose this route if custom server-side rules or routing are central to the form.
  • Plan who will maintain the handler, credentials, integrations, and failure monitoring.
  • Account for function usage and the services used for storage, email, or integrations rather than considering the function in isolation.

When a hosted form service makes more sense

A managed form endpoint can be a simpler option for a basic contact or lead form when its workflow meets your requirements. It can shift endpoint operation and some supporting features to a vendor, but it does not eliminate configuration or due diligence: confirm the form’s validation needs, notifications, integrations, data policies, usage limits, and migration options.

Formspree documents a hosted endpoint and React support. Its integration materials describe submission collection, spam protection, email notifications, uploads, and third-party integrations; those are vendor-described capabilities, so check the current product and plan details before depending on a feature. A third-party form endpoint can work even when the site uses a different host. Vercel’s tutorial demonstrates a React form deployed on Vercel using Formspree, illustrating that the form handler and site host need not be the same service: Vercel’s Formspree tutorial.

Netlify Forms: a managed intake with an optional function

Netlify Forms is a platform-native managed option, not simply a synonym for a custom serverless function. Netlify documents form detection from deployed HTML at build time and provides React integration guidance. A form rendered only in the browser may be absent from the prebuilt files the parser reads, so follow the platform’s React instructions and verify the production build. Netlify says its built-in handling needs no extra API calls or JavaScript once enabled and configured; that statement applies to this Netlify feature, not to hosted form services generally. See Netlify Forms setup.

Netlify also documents a combined flow: verified submissions can trigger a Netlify Function, letting managed intake feed custom follow-up processing. This can suit a team that wants platform-managed collection but needs code for what happens next. See Netlify form notifications and function triggers.

Check data handling before sending personal information

For any provider, find out where submissions are stored, who can access them, how long they are retained, and how to export or delete them. Also check the handling of uploaded files and whether the service’s controls match the sensitivity of the information your form collects.

Netlify says form submissions are stored in its user database and submitted code is sanitized. It recommends regularly exporting and deleting personally identifiable information and flags a security integration for files containing PII. These are Netlify-specific statements, not guarantees about other providers; consult Netlify’s form security guidance and the current terms for the service you choose.

Compare costs using your actual plan and usage

There is no established apples-to-apples price comparison here for custom functions, Netlify Forms, and Formspree. Compare the costs that apply to your setup: function invocations and engineering time on one side; submission or storage allowances, plan limits, upgrades, and fees on the other. Include any email, CRM, or storage services involved in either design.

Netlify’s billing page says Forms are free and unlimited on credit-based plans. For legacy plans, usage is metered by verified submissions and file-upload storage, with limits and potential plan-level changes. Because those rules are plan-specific and can change, check Netlify’s current billing terms for your account rather than treating “free” as a universal or permanent comparison.

A practical decision process

  1. Define the workflow. Write down what should happen after submission: validation, storage, notification, routing, and any follow-up integrations.
  2. Separate custom requirements from routine handling. If application-specific server-side rules are essential, evaluate a function. If a provider’s endpoint and features already cover the workflow, evaluate its managed service.
  3. Check deployment behavior. Confirm the chosen handler works with your site host and the way React renders the form. For Netlify Forms, test the deployed production build against its build-time detection requirements.
  4. Review data and operations. Verify access, retention, export and deletion, upload treatment, spam controls, and who owns failures or changes.
  5. Compare the full cost and exit path. Use your actual plan and expected usage, and check how submissions and integrations could be moved if you change providers.
