Then compare stick-versus-box design, HDR support, wired networking, storage and platform features against how you actually watch. A higher maximum specification does not guarantee a better picture or faster performance.
1. Confirm your TV and HDMI connection can handle 4K
Check the TV’s specifications and the HDMI input you plan to use. The TV needs to support 4K UHD for 4K output; if HDR matters, check its supported formats, such as HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision or HLG. A streamer cannot add a format that the TV does not support.

Roku’s 4K, 8K and HDR setup guidance calls for HDMI 2.0 for 4K streaming or Blu-ray and notes that devices in the signal chain must meet the relevant compatibility requirements. Check the HDMI input settings and HDCP support required by your equipment, too.

If the streamer connects through a soundbar or receiver, that device and its HDMI connections become part of the 4K/HDR path. Verify their compatibility rather than assuming that a capable TV and player are enough.

Do not replace an HDMI cable automatically. First check the one you use now. Some older cables may not carry 4K HDR at 60 frames per second; Roku’s display troubleshooting guidance identifies Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cables for relevant cases. If the picture is not reaching the expected format, check the setup and cable capability before buying anything.
3. Make sure your app, title and plan offer the formats you want
A device that supports 4K HDR does not make every stream 4K HDR. The streaming service, the specific app, the title and your subscription plan all need to provide the format. Roku’s UK 4K setup guidance includes a service and plan that support 4K among the requirements. Subscription rules differ by service and can change, so check the service you use rather than assuming your current plan includes 4K.

Match HDR formats across the whole path: player, TV, content and any receiver or soundbar. For example, a player listing Dolby Vision support is useful only if the rest of the setup and the content support Dolby Vision too. Apple likewise says that a 4K/HDR TV is required for 4K/HDR streaming on Apple TV 4K in its technical specifications.

4. Consider network quality where the TV is
Broadband speed at the router is not the whole story: Wi-Fi signal strength and congestion in the room where the TV sits can affect streaming. Roku’s UK setup page says up to 25 Mbps may be needed for 4K Ultra HD. Treat that as Roku’s estimate, not a universal threshold for every service or household.

Wired Ethernet can be a useful option if Wi-Fi near the TV is unreliable, but check how the particular device provides it: some players have a built-in port, while a stick may require an adapter. Ethernet can improve the connection between the player and your home network; it cannot increase the capacity of your broadband plan.

Use a short checklist to narrow the choice:
- Format match: Does the device support the HDR formats your TV and content use?
- Network connection: Is built-in Ethernet important, or would an adapter be acceptable? Does the listed Wi-Fi capability match your router?
- Form and placement: Is a stick that plugs into HDMI more convenient, or do you prefer a separate box?
- Platform fit: Check that your streaming services are available and consider the casting, voice-assistant or smart-home features you actually use.
- Storage and remote: Compare stated storage and remote features if downloaded apps, games or particular controls matter to you.
- Price and availability: Check current local listings; prices and inventory can change, and a specification alone is not a reason to pay more.
Official specifications establish what manufacturers list, not comparative picture quality, speed, reliability or user satisfaction. Those performance claims require independent testing.
