To check your PS5’s installed software, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. To install an available update online, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software if prompted. You can also update from a USB drive through Safe Mode if the online download fails.
Check your PS5 system software version
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the version shown on the Console Information screen. If Up to date appears below it, Sony says the latest version is installed. See PlayStation Support’s version-check instructions.
Install an update online
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If the screen shows Update Available, select Update System Software and follow the prompts.
You can configure the console to download and install updates automatically in the same settings area. The version offered can change, so check the console’s update screen or Sony’s PS5 system software page for the current update rather than relying on a version number from an older guide.

Update your PS5 from a USB drive
The USB method is an alternative to updating through the console’s online connection. Follow Sony’s current manual update instructions and use the update file downloaded from PlayStation’s official page; Sony advises against using files from other sources or methods it has not documented.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

Prepare the USB drive
- On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named PS5 on the drive, then create an UPDATE folder inside it.
- Save Sony’s update file in the UPDATE folder with the exact filename PS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free USB space for this update file; the amount may change with the update.
Install it in Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the USB drive, then select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console does not recognize the file, check that the folder names and filename are exact and that their capitalization matches Sony’s instructions. See Sony’s Safe Mode update guidance for the documented procedure.

A routine update installs a newer system software release. Reinstallation is a separate recovery or reset procedure; Sony warns that it deletes all data on the PS5. Do not choose a reinstallation option or use a reinstallation file when you only need a normal update. Sony also warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.”
