Use Windows to record your PC’s exact model, installed RAM, and storage use, then verify upgrade compatibility against documentation for that model before buying anything. The figures in Settings describe what is installed or how much space is available; they do not tell you whether memory or a drive can be replaced.
Find your PC model and installed RAM
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open System > About.
- Record the model shown below the device name and the Installed RAM value under Device specifications. Note the processor and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit too if a manufacturer’s upgrade requirements call for them.
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s device-information guide explains where to find these details. The model number is the key for looking up your computer’s service manual and supported components.

Check how much storage you have and what is using it
See storage use and drive details in Settings
Go to Settings > System > Storage for a breakdown of space use. Windows Storage settings can also show a drive’s type, such as SSD or HDD, capacity, and current usage. Record which drive contains Windows and note any additional drives. Microsoft’s Storage settings guide describes this view.
Check free space for each drive
Open File Explorer > This PC to see available space under Devices and drives. If the PC has multiple drives, use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to review them individually. Microsoft also explains how to free up drive space in Windows.

Keep the measurements distinct: capacity is the drive’s total size, used space is what is occupied, and free or available space is what remains. Freeing files may help with low space, but it does not increase the drive’s total capacity.
Confirm whether your PC can take an upgrade
Before choosing RAM or storage, look up the exact model in the manufacturer’s specifications or service manual. Confirm the component’s characteristics rather than relying on installed-memory or free-space readings alone.

For a RAM upgrade
- Memory generation and type, and module form factor.
- Whether memory is soldered or replaceable, and how many slots are available.
- Capacity supported per slot and maximum total capacity.
- Any matched-module or configuration requirements.
Installed RAM in About reports what is present; it does not report open slots or the maximum the computer supports.
For a storage upgrade
- Supported interface or protocol and physical form factor.
- Whether the computer has an available slot or bay, or whether an existing drive must be replaced.
- Any supported capacity limits.
- Whether replacing the Windows drive will require data migration or an operating-system reinstall.
Crucial offers a System Scanner that it says analyzes a computer for compatible memory and storage upgrades, as well as an Upgrade Selector. These are product-finding tools, not a substitute for confirming the exact machine and component specifications before checkout.

Decide what to upgrade based on the constraint
Use your inventory to identify the problem first: limited memory and low free storage are different constraints. Then compare only options confirmed for your model, including supported capacity and component fit. The Windows screens do not establish a universal best RAM amount or drive size, and a PC may not have an upgrade path at all.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements list at least 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device among the operating system’s minimums. These are OS requirements, not upgrade recommendations and not evidence that a particular PC accepts different memory or storage. A hardware change alone does not establish Windows 11 eligibility.

Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions explain how to check eligibility; the app can also show main-drive usage and free space. As of October 4, 2026, Windows 10 support has ended: Microsoft lists October 14, 2025, as the end date on its device-information page. Hardware-upgrade decisions and supported operating-system status are separate checks.
