For most printed QR codes expected to stay clean and intact, start with level M. Consider Q or H if the code is likely to face dirt, abrasion, frequent handling, or a design overlay. Higher correction levels can help recover damaged data, but may require a denser symbol for the same content. The right choice depends on the printed size, available space, print quality, and scanners your readers will use.
What QR code error-correction levels mean
DENSO WAVE gives approximate recovery figures for the four levels. They describe the share of codewords that may be restored—not a guaranteed percentage of the printed image that can be covered or damaged.
| Level | Approximate codeword recovery | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| L | About 7% (DENSO WAVE; accessed 2026) | When compactness or symbol capacity matters and the print is expected to remain clean. |
| M | About 15% (DENSO WAVE; accessed 2026) | A practical starting point for ordinary print expected to remain intact. |
| Q | About 25% (DENSO WAVE; accessed 2026) | When some physical wear or contamination is plausible. |
| H | About 30% (DENSO WAVE; accessed 2026) | When the code faces a greater risk of damage or alteration, provided the resulting symbol still prints and scans reliably. |
These figures are approximate recovery capacity, not promises: recovery depends on how damage affects the symbol. A higher level does not make every part of a QR code equally safe to obscure.
How to choose a level for your print job
Use M as the ordinary-print starting point
For a poster, handout, or other indoor print expected to remain intact, M is a reasonable balance: it provides more recovery capacity than L without defaulting to the highest level. This is a practical recommendation, not a universal DENSO WAVE rule.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Q or H when wear is a real possibility
A label that will be handled often, or a code exposed to dirt or abrasion, may justify Q or H. Extra correction can improve the chance of recovering data after some damage, but it cannot guarantee recovery from arbitrary damage, poor contrast, blur, or an undersized print.
Keep L in consideration when space is tight
If the code will be kept clean and its payload must fit within a limited print area, L may be worth considering. It has the lowest approximate recovery capacity, so weigh that trade-off against the conditions in which the code will be used.

Do not select H automatically
The amount and character set of the encoded data, the correction level, and the available print area all affect the resulting symbol. A higher correction setting can require more modules for the same payload, leaving smaller modules if the outer dimensions stay fixed. Generate the actual code and check it at its intended print size before deciding.
Why print size and output quality matter
DENSO WAVE describes QR Code versions ranging from 21 × 21 modules for Version 1 to 177 × 177 modules for Version 40, with each successive version adding four modules per side. More encoded data can require a higher version and therefore more modules. If the printed symbol must fit the same area, more modules mean less physical space per module.

DENSO WAVE recommends making the symbol as large as the available printing area allows and using at least four printer dots per module for stable operation. That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for every printer, material, or camera. Printer resolution and the intended scanner’s ability to read the module size both matter.

Leave a clear quiet space around the QR code rather than placing text or graphics right up against its edge. DENSO WAVE’s FAQ gives a four-module white-space example for a Version 2 symbol printed with 0.5 mm modules; treat it as an example, not a replacement for applicable production specifications.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Added illustrations or other design elements can make a code slow or impossible to read. DENSO WAVE recommends black on white as the basic color treatment. If you use unusual colors or modify the symbol, test the finished print instead of assuming error correction will compensate.

Check the final printed code
- Generate the code using the intended correction level and final content. Avoid unnecessary encoded data: payload affects the version and density of the symbol.
- Place it at the final physical size. Keep the quiet space clear and make sure the symbol is as large as practical within the available area.
- Print a proof with the actual printer, stock, and output settings. The on-screen image does not show whether the printed modules will be sharp or large enough.
- Scan the proof with the intended phones or scanners. Test at realistic distances and angles, not just in ideal close-up conditions.
- Troubleshoot the print before simply raising correction. Check physical size, contrast, quiet space, print sharpness, and scanner capability. A higher error-correction level does not fix every printing or scanning problem.
