Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To check a green card case, enter the 13-character receipt number from your USCIS notice in Case Status Online. For a timing estimate or to see whether you can ask about a delayed case, use USCIS’s Processing Times tool and select the row that matches your form, category, receipt date, and office. The status tool reports case activity; the processing-time estimate describes historical USCIS workload, not a promised decision date.
The key is to treat these as separate questions: What does USCIS currently show for this case? How long have comparable cases taken recently? And does USCIS’s tool currently allow an inquiry? Matching the right form, category, office, and receipt date helps you answer each one without confusing an estimate with a decision or a delivery update.

Check your case status with the receipt number
- Find the receipt number. Look on the USCIS notice for your case. It has 13 characters: three letters followed by ten numbers.
- Enter it in Case Status Online. Type the number without dashes. Check the characters carefully if the tool does not find the case.
- Read the current update. Note whether USCIS reports a case action, a notice issued, or a card mailed. Those are different situations: a delivery problem after a notice or card was issued needs the relevant missing-mail steps, not just another status check.
When entering the number, use the receipt number on the notice rather than a number copied from another document or another person’s case. The format is specific: three letters followed by ten numbers, for 13 characters total. USCIS instructs users to enter it without dashes. If the case is not found, first compare what you typed with the notice character by character, including the letters and digits, and make sure no dash was included.
A USCIS online account is another way to view case status and history. USCIS describes account features that include automatic alerts, processing-time information, evidence uploads, address updates, and secure messages. The account can be useful for keeping track of activity, but the official case-status and processing-time tools remain the sources to consult for the current update and inquiry options.

The account and Case Status Online serve related but distinct tracking purposes: one can help you follow status and history, while the public status tool is a direct way to check the case using the receipt number. Account features may also make it possible to receive alerts, view processing-time information, upload evidence, update an address, or send secure messages. These are USCIS-described functions; they do not turn a historical estimate into a personal deadline or guarantee that a case will be decided by a particular date.
Find the processing-time row that matches your case
Processing times are not a single universal number for every green card application. In the USCIS tool, select the exact form type and category that apply, then use the office and receipt-date information from your notice as the tool requests. A mismatch can make the displayed estimate irrelevant to your case.
- Form and category: Match the case to the exact form type and category shown in the available choices. Do not assume that two cases related to green cards necessarily use the same row; the tool’s selection is based on the applicable form and category.
- Office: Use the office or category currently offered by the tool. USCIS says some service-center cases appear under “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” because casework may be handled at multiple locations. An older service-center label on a notice is not necessarily a prediction of where the case is being worked now.
- Receipt date: Use the date on the receipt notice when the tool asks for it. It is also needed to work out how long the case has been pending.
Think of the selection as a matching exercise, not a search for the row with the most reassuring number. The useful comparison is between the exact form and category for the case and the choices currently offered by USCIS. Next, compare the office information on the notice with the office or category available in the live tool. Finally, use the receipt date requested by the tool. Choosing a different form, category, or office can point to a different population of cases and make its displayed timing a poor reference for yours.
USCIS says some cases that have a service-center association are listed under “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” because cases may be handled at multiple locations. That means an older service-center name should not be read as a fixed forecast of where all work on a case will happen. If the current tool offers SCOPS rather than the older label, follow the current tool’s options rather than trying to infer a work location from an old label. The point is to use the current matching category, not to predict which individual office will touch the file.
USCIS processing-time information is updated monthly, and office labels or available rows can change. The figures and categories in the live tool are more useful than an old estimate copied from a prior search or from a different applicant’s case. If you check again later, confirm the form, category, office selection, and receipt date again instead of assuming a saved estimate still applies.
What a USCIS processing-time estimate means
USCIS defines its displayed processing time as the time it took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases during the previous six months. In other words, the number describes a recent historical group of completed cases that match the selected tool options. USCIS calls the information a general reference point for how long it has taken to complete most cases.
That definition matters when you read the number. It describes adjudicated cases from the prior six-month period, not every case currently waiting and not an individual prediction. It is a historical measure of how long USCIS took to complete most cases in the selected grouping. Because the page is updated monthly, the displayed figure can change as the underlying period and USCIS information change.

It is not an individualized forecast. A case may finish sooner or take longer than the displayed time, and reaching or passing the estimate does not itself mean USCIS has made a decision. The estimate also does not say whether a case will be approved. Treat it as context for the selected form, category, and office—not as a deadline or a guarantee.
For example, if a case has been pending about as long as the displayed processing-time figure, that comparison alone does not establish that USCIS has missed a promised date. The figure is not a due date for that individual case. Nor does a shorter elapsed time mean that a decision must be coming soon. The estimate summarizes the recent completion history of cases selected by the tool, while the individual case status reports activity for a particular receipt number.
Use the figure to understand the recent pace for the matching group, and use the case-status tool to see whether USCIS has posted an update for the specific receipt number. Those two views answer different questions. Avoid comparing your case to a different applicant’s estimate unless the form, category, office, and relevant dates match; a similar-sounding case may not be represented by the same row.
Processing estimate and inquiry date are different
The processing-time figure and the date when you may ask USCIS about a case answer separate questions:
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool information | What it represents | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Processing-time estimate | Time in which USCIS completed 80% of adjudicated cases during the previous six months. | A promised completion date for your case. |
| Case-inquiry date | A point at which the tool may let you submit a question about a case that has been pending beyond the applicable threshold. | A prediction that USCIS will decide or approve the case on that date. |
For its inquiry-date calculation, USCIS uses the time to complete 93% of adjudicated cases and subtracts the time already elapsed since the receipt date. Depending on the result, the online tool may show an estimated date to ask or provide a link to submit a question. Recheck the tool: processing data and inquiry dates can change as USCIS updates its information.
The inquiry calculation is separate from the displayed 80% processing-time measure. USCIS uses the time for 93% of adjudicated cases as part of the inquiry-date calculation, then accounts for the elapsed time since the case’s receipt date. This helps determine when a case may be outside the applicable inquiry threshold. It does not mean that 93% of cases will be completed by the date shown for one applicant, and it does not identify a decision date.
When comparing the two outputs, ask what each one is for: the processing-time figure describes historical completion timing, while the inquiry information helps establish when USCIS may accept a question about a case. An inquiry date is not an approval estimate, an adjudication deadline, or a promise that the case will receive an answer immediately. It is a point at which USCIS’s tool may provide an option to submit a question.

When can you submit a case inquiry?
- Open USCIS Processing Times and select the form, category, and office information that fit your case.
- Enter the receipt date if requested and review the inquiry information for that selection.
- If the tool gives an estimated date to ask, use it to determine whether the case is outside the inquiry threshold. If it offers a submission link, follow the tool’s instructions to send the question.
- If the case is not yet eligible, check again later rather than treating the processing estimate as an inquiry authorization.
Use the live tool for the case’s current options. The inquiry date can change as USCIS updates its information, so an earlier check is not necessarily the last word on whether an inquiry is available. Revisit the tool using the same relevant case details, including the correct form, category, office selection, and receipt date. If the tool provides a link to submit a question, follow that route and its instructions rather than assuming that every case can be queried at any time.
If your form type is not listed, USCIS’s processing FAQ says that more than six months pending is the default period before an inquiry. That threshold is not a promise that USCIS will decide the case in six months. The tool and applicable USCIS guidance determine whether an inquiry is available; asking a question is not the same as receiving a decision.
The “more than six months” default applies to the situation USCIS describes when a form type is not listed. It should not be substituted for a listed form’s current tool result, and it should not be treated as an assurance that a decision will arrive at six months. A question becomes appropriate only when USCIS’s applicable inquiry guidance or the tool indicates an inquiry is available. Even then, submitting a question is a request for information, not a decision on the underlying application.
If you are unsure whether the relevant date is an inquiry date or a processing estimate, return to the tool’s inquiry information rather than using the general completion figure as a threshold. The 80% figure and the separate 93% inquiry calculation have different purposes. Keeping them separate prevents two common misunderstandings: assuming that a case can be queried as soon as it reaches the displayed processing time, or assuming that an inquiry date predicts when USCIS will decide it.
What to do if a notice or green card did not arrive
First distinguish a missing document from a case with no update. If Case Status Online says USCIS issued a notice, check the status there first and follow the missing-notice guidance. If the status says a card was mailed, use the status information and the USPS tracking number when one is available. USCIS also provides an e-Request route for certain cards that were not delivered.

- Notice may have been issued: Check Case Status Online before treating the case as though USCIS has not acted.
- Card is marked mailed: Review the case status and use the USPS tracking number when available.
- Card was not delivered: Check whether the situation qualifies for USCIS’s e-Request path for undelivered cards.
A notice that was issued and a card that was mailed have different follow-up routes. Use the relevant USCIS instructions for the document and status shown rather than submitting a routine timing inquiry as if there had been no case activity.
This distinction can save you from following the wrong route. A status that indicates a notice was issued calls for checking the case status and using USCIS’s missing-notice guidance. A status that indicates a card was mailed calls for checking the status details and using the USPS tracking number if one is available. If the card was not delivered, USCIS’s e-Request route is available for certain undelivered-card situations. The fact that a document is missing does not erase the case activity already shown in the status update.

Keep the kind of document in view as you choose the next step. A notice and a card are not interchangeable, and the guidance for an undelivered card is not necessarily the route for a notice that may have been issued. Likewise, a routine inquiry about a case taking longer than expected is not the same as following up on mail after USCIS has recorded that a notice or card was issued or mailed. Start with the current status, identify which document is involved, and then use the matching USCIS instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a case can seem to take longer than expected
The first thing to check is whether the estimate you are comparing against matches your case. USCIS’s number reflects a selected form, category, and office grouping and is based on completions during the previous six months. A number from a different category, a different office selection, or an earlier monthly update may not be a useful comparison. Recheck the live tool rather than relying on an old saved estimate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The second thing to check is whether you are comparing a processing estimate with an inquiry date. The 80% historical completion measure is not itself a point at which USCIS promises to decide a case or permits an inquiry. The inquiry calculation uses a different percentile—93%—and accounts for elapsed time since the receipt date. Use the specific inquiry information in the tool to see whether you may submit a question.
Finally, look at the case status separately. A posted update that a notice or card was issued or mailed points to a document-delivery follow-up, not simply to a case with no update. An estimate that has passed, by contrast, is not in itself proof of a decision, an approval, or a missed guaranteed date. These distinctions help explain what the available information does and does not establish; they do not predict the outcome of an individual case.
Keep routine tracking separate from legal advice
USCIS’s status, processing-time, account, and inquiry tools provide process information. They do not replace individualized immigration legal advice. If you need advice about what a case update means for your circumstances or how to respond to a legal issue, USCIS directs people to an authorized service provider.
Routine tracking questions—finding a receipt number, checking a posted update, matching a processing-time row, or seeing whether an inquiry is available—can be handled through USCIS’s own tools and guidance. Questions about how an update affects an individual’s legal circumstances are different. For those, use an authorized service provider rather than treating a general processing figure or a case-status message as individualized advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my green card case status?
Use USCIS Case Status Online and enter the 13-character receipt number from your USCIS notice without dashes. The number consists of three letters followed by ten numbers. A USCIS online account can also show case status and history.
Where can I find my receipt number?
Find it on the USCIS notice for the case. It is 13 characters: three letters followed by ten numbers. Enter it without dashes in Case Status Online.
Why is my case taking so long?
First confirm that the processing-time row matches your exact form, category, and the office or category currently offered by USCIS. The displayed time reflects how long USCIS took to complete 80% of adjudicated cases during the previous six months; it is a historical reference, not a promised decision date for an individual case.

Use USCIS Processing Times, select the applicable form, category, and office, and enter the receipt date if requested. The tool may provide an estimated date to ask or a link to submit a question. If your form type is not listed, USCIS’s FAQ gives more than six months pending as the default period before an inquiry; this does not promise a decision in six months.
Does the inquiry date mean USCIS will decide my case then?
No. USCIS’s inquiry-date calculation uses the time to complete 93% of adjudicated cases and subtracts elapsed time since the receipt date. The date indicates when the tool may allow a question; it is not a decision or approval prediction.
What if I did not receive my notice or green card?
If USCIS indicates that a notice was issued, first check Case Status Online and follow the missing-notice guidance. If a card is marked mailed, check the status and use the USPS tracking number when available. USCIS has an e-Request route for certain undelivered cards.
Why does the office on my notice differ from the processing-time tool?
USCIS says some service-center cases are listed under “Service Center Operations (SCOPS)” because casework may be handled at multiple locations. Use the current tool options; an older service-center label is not a fixed prediction of where work is occurring.
The Bottom Line
Use the receipt number to check the case itself, then use the live USCIS Processing Times tool with the correct form, category, office, and receipt date. A processing-time figure is historical, and an inquiry date only indicates when USCIS may let you ask a question. For missing mail, follow the guidance for the specific notice or card status shown.
