On Xbox Series X|S, check the free space on the specific device where you plan to install the game: press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices. Compare that device’s available-space figure with the game’s current install requirement before starting the download.
Check free space on the intended device
- Turn on the console and press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices.
- Review the available space shown for the device you intend to use: internal storage, a Storage Expansion Card, or a connected USB drive.

Check the current install requirement in the game’s store listing or the console’s install prompt, then compare it with the free space on your chosen device. Requirements vary by game and can be affected by updates or included content; there is no universal free-space threshold or guaranteed buffer that applies to every installation.

Free space if the device is short
- Uninstall games or content you no longer need from the device with insufficient space.
- Check whether the particular game supports removing optional components. Xbox notes that component removal depends on title support, so the option will not be available for every game.
- Choose another connected device if it has enough available space and supports the game’s installation and play requirements.
Know what different storage devices can do
Xbox lists USB 3.1 external hard drives and Storage Expansion Cards as storage options. Their capabilities are not interchangeable:
