How to Check Windows Security Protection Status in Settings

Open Windows Security to review protection icons, antivirus provider status, firewall profiles, and recent events in Protection history.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Start, search for Windows Security, and launch the app. Its protection-area cards show whether Windows reports a recommendation or an urgent issue; open the relevant card to see the details. For antivirus provider and firewall status, check the dedicated pages rather than relying on the dashboard icon alone.

Read the Windows Security status icons

On the Windows Security home page, scan the icons on the protection-area cards. Microsoft describes a green icon as meaning the device is sufficiently protected with no recommended action, yellow as indicating a safety recommendation, and red as indicating something that needs immediate attention. These are explanations of what the app reports, not independent proof that a device is free of threats. Microsoft’s Windows Security app overview explains the icon meanings.

A yellow notice is not necessarily an active malware infection. Select the card and read the recommendation before deciding what to do. Do not turn off a protection feature simply to make its status appear green.

Check antivirus protection and provider

Review threats, scans, and protection settings

In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection. Review any current-threat information and the last scan details shown, then use the page’s scan options or protection settings as needed. Microsoft documents the available page controls in its Windows Security guidance.

Find which antivirus provider is registered

To identify the active antivirus provider, open Virus & threat protection > Who’s protecting me? > Manage providers. A compatible third-party antivirus can register as the provider and automatically turn Microsoft Defender Antivirus off. In that case, Defender showing as off does not by itself mean that no antivirus is active. Check the provider listing before interpreting the Defender status. See Microsoft’s explanation of antivirus providers.

Real-time protection is an important distinction: while it is off, files you open or download are not scanned for threats. Check its state in Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, and avoid leaving it off unless another compatible antivirus provider is handling protection. Microsoft describes the setting in its Windows Security overview.

Check Microsoft Defender Firewall for the network you use

Open Firewall & network protection and review the profile corresponding to your current connection. Windows shows domain, private, and public network profiles; firewall status can differ by profile, so do not assume that the state for one applies to all. Open the profile to see its Microsoft Defender Firewall status. Microsoft explains these profiles and settings in its Windows Security overview.

If the device is managed by an organization, policy may control these settings or prevent you from changing them. A locked control or unavailable option can therefore reflect organizational management rather than a problem with Windows Security.

Use provider details and Protection history to investigate warnings

If a status is unclear, open Settings > Manage providers to review the provider summary. For recent actions or services that were turned off, open Protection history. Microsoft says Protection history keeps entries for two weeks; administrator privileges are required to view details for threats. After that retention period, older events may no longer appear there. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.

What the status can—and cannot—tell you

  • Dashboard icons: summarize whether Windows Security reports no recommended action, a recommendation, or an urgent issue.
  • Antivirus status: identify the registered provider through Manage providers; Defender’s own off state may be expected when compatible third-party antivirus is active.
  • Firewall status: check the profile for the network currently in use, and account for organization-managed policies.
  • Device safety: Windows Security reports protection status and events, but a green icon is not a guarantee that no threat exists.

The described pages apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although available controls can vary by version and by whether an organization manages the device.
