How to Check Which Wi-Fi Band Your myQ Device Needs

Most myQ garage devices need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, but the Video Keypad and Cameras are exceptions. Learn how to check your band, signal, and router settings.

Most myQ garage devices require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, so a 5 GHz-only network will not work with them. But myQ devices do not all share the same requirements: the Video Keypad and myQ Cameras support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Check the requirements for your exact model before changing your router settings.

Which myQ devices need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?

Chamberlain Group’s general Wi-Fi network guidance says most myQ garage devices connect over 2.4 GHz. A router configured to broadcast only 5 GHz therefore prevents most devices covered by that guidance from connecting.

There are documented exceptions. The myQ Video Keypad FAQ and myQ Cameras network guide list support for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Because myQ includes different device categories and models, do not assume that a requirement for one product applies to every other product.

What to do if your router has one Wi-Fi name

A single network name can cover both Wi-Fi bands. It does not necessarily mean the router lacks 2.4 GHz. Check the router’s Wi-Fi settings, or ask your internet provider or router maker whether the 2.4 GHz band is enabled. If the router uses separate names for each band, select the network configured for 2.4 GHz when setting up a device that requires it. The Wi-Fi garage door opener setup guidance addresses band selection and combined network names.

Setup requirements beyond the Wi-Fi band

Having 2.4 GHz available is not the only setup condition. The requirements vary by device type:

  • Smart Garage Hub or Smart Garage Control: myQ’s setup guidance lists a 2.4 GHz network, strong Wi-Fi signal in the garage, the network name and password, the myQ app on a smartphone, and a compatible garage door opener.
  • Wi-Fi garage door opener: its setup guidance calls for a strong 2.4 GHz signal, Wi-Fi credentials, and Bluetooth enabled on the phone during setup.
  • Video Keypad: the FAQ lists both Wi-Fi bands and notes that an extender may be needed if the signal remains low at the keypad location.

For broader router troubleshooting, myQ’s router requirements also call for a visible network, WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal security, DHCP enabled, and support for 802.11 b/g/n. The page says myQ devices use TCP port 8883 to communicate with myQ servers.

How to troubleshoot a myQ connection

  1. Confirm the device model and its supported bands. Use that product’s setup guide or FAQ; do not rely on a general myQ assumption when the product may be an exception.
  2. Verify that 2.4 GHz is enabled. If your router uses one network name, inspect its settings or ask the provider or router maker. If it separates the bands, choose the 2.4 GHz network for a device that requires it.
  3. Check the signal where the device is installed. A strong signal in the house does not establish that coverage is strong in the garage or at the keypad. Improve coverage if the signal is weak; an extender may help where coverage is the problem.
  4. Review the router conditions. Check network visibility, the recommended personal WPA security, DHCP, supported wireless modes, and TCP port 8883 if the band is available but setup or communication still fails.
  5. Follow the model’s setup steps. Have the Wi-Fi name and password ready; for a Wi-Fi garage door opener, enable Bluetooth on the phone during setup.

An extender addresses weak coverage, not band compatibility: it will not make a 5 GHz-only network work for a device that requires 2.4 GHz.
