To check whether a Switch 2 game works offline, look up the exact edition in Nintendo eShop or on its packaging, then check how a digital copy is licensed on your console. A loaded Virtual Game Card can be played offline; online-license access needs an internet connection; Game-Key Cards need a download and connected first launch; and cloud versions need internet during play. A game can also require internet for its own launch or certain features, even after it is downloaded.
Check the game’s format and internet requirements
“Physical” and “downloaded” do not tell you on their own whether a game can start without internet. Check the listing or package for the exact edition and look for requirements tied to the game, its access format, or particular modes.

- Regular physical game card: Check the title’s own information for internet requirements. A physical card does not rule out a game-specific online requirement.
- Game-Key Card: The card does not contain the full game. The software must be downloaded, and an internet connection is required the first time you launch it. After that, it can start offline, but the Game-Key Card must be inserted. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview explains the requirements.
- Cloud version: The game is streamed rather than fully downloaded, so internet is needed throughout play. Nintendo says a stable, consistent high-speed connection is required. See the Cloud Versions FAQ.
- Digital download: Check whether its Virtual Game Card is loaded on the Switch 2 you plan to use, or whether you intend to use online-license access.
Look for wording that an internet connection is required to play, that the game is a cloud version, or that an online membership must be verified. A title may offer offline single-player play while keeping some modes online-only; check the requirements for the mode you intend to use.
Set up a digital game for offline use
Use a loaded Virtual Game Card
Nintendo says a game or DLC whose Virtual Game Card is loaded on a console can be played without an internet connection. Before leaving, confirm that the card is loaded on the Switch 2 you will take with you. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide describes the feature. Moving virtual cards between linked consoles requires internet, so do that before you go offline.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do not rely on online-license access offline
Nintendo describes the online-license setting as a way to play downloaded software without loading its Virtual Game Card while the console is connected to the internet. If the card is not loaded and you plan to use this access method, you need connectivity. See Nintendo’s Online License Setting guide.
Prepare a Game-Key Card before travelling
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and download the full game from the Game-Key Card.
- Make sure the console has enough free space. Nintendo identifies system memory and microSD Express storage as options; the required space varies by game, so check its listing or packaging.
- Launch the game once while connected. Nintendo says an internet connection is required only when launching for the first time, after the software has been downloaded.
- Take the Game-Key Card with you. It must be inserted to play, including when you are offline.
Check for game-specific launch and membership checks
A completed download does not guarantee that every game or mode will work offline. Some software requires internet to play, or needs to verify a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo lists these as possible causes of an internet error at startup in its start-up troubleshooting guidance. Check the exact game’s information and distinguish requirements for the whole game from requirements for online modes.

Verify Switch 2 compatibility separately
Whether a game works on Switch 2 and whether it works offline are separate questions. If the title was made for the original Switch, check Nintendo’s compatibility information for known issues, then check the title’s internet requirements using the steps above. Compatibility alone does not establish offline support.

Before-you-go checklist
- Check the exact edition in Nintendo eShop or on its packaging.
- Identify whether it is a regular physical card, a Game-Key Card, a digital download, or a cloud version.
- For a digital download, confirm the Virtual Game Card is loaded on the console you will use offline.
- For a Game-Key Card, finish the download and connected first launch, confirm adequate storage, and bring the card.
- Assume a cloud version needs internet during play.
- Check for game-specific internet or membership verification requirements, and confirm original Switch titles are compatible with Switch 2.
