Why CSS support differs between HTML-to-PDF engines
“HTML to PDF” describes an output format, not one standardized rendering implementation. Different engines support different CSS features, and a feature that works in a browser may not behave the same way in every PDF renderer. The result can also change between versions of the same engine.

How print media and colors affect a Puppeteer PDF
Because Puppeteer’s page.pdf() uses print media by default, CSS inside @media print can affect the PDF even if the page looks different in a normal browser view. To use screen media for the PDF instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating it.

Puppeteer also documents that PDF generation adjusts colors for printing by default. If exact colors matter, its API points to -webkit-print-color-adjust. Confirm the result in the generated PDF; the setting does not establish that every color will render identically across engines or versions. See Puppeteer’s PDF API details.
Which pagination features need special checking?
Page layout and margins
For page size, page-specific margins, or different layouts on selected pages, check support for @page, page selectors, named pages, and page-margin boxes in the exact renderer reference. Running headers, footers, and counters
Repeated headers or footers and page numbers often depend on paged-media features such as running elements, margin boxes, or page-based counters. Verify the mechanism you plan to use rather than assuming that a browser’s screen layout will repeat content correctly on PDF pages.

If a publication needs footnotes, bleed, or printer marks, confirm each feature separately. WeasyPrint documents footnotes, bleed, and marks, while also listing limitations for footnote display. Documentation for one feature does not imply support for every related paged-media behavior.

Fonts and transforms
WeasyPrint documents @font-face support, with font-family matching that differs from the recommendation because it passes the family name to Pango. It documents 2D transforms but not 3D transform properties and functions. Check the renderer’s current reference for the exact font or transform behavior your design relies on.
How to choose an HTML-to-PDF engine
Choose against the requirements of your document, not a general claim of “CSS support.” Compare the renderer’s documented behavior with the output and operational constraints you actually have:

- Version stability: Check whether you can pin the renderer version, provide its required fonts and dependencies, and regression-check output after upgrades.
- PDF requirements: Verify any requirements for exact colors, embedded fonts, PDF/A or another PDF format, links, forms, or accessibility tagging in the chosen engine’s current documentation.
These are decision criteria, not a universal ranking: the cited documentation does not establish that one engine is best for every document. Puppeteer, WeasyPrint, and Prince document different API behavior and print-oriented features, so match the engine to the specific layout and output requirements.

- Name the renderer and version. “HTML to PDF” is not a single implementation, so record the exact engine used in production.
- Identify the required CSS behavior. Check the renderer’s current documentation for each feature, such as
@page, running headers, footnotes, grid, color, or fonts. - Create a representative sample. Use the same fonts, assets, and media mode as the production document, and include the page layouts and content that matter.
- Inspect the generated PDF. Check page breaks, repeated content, links, and colors in the output rather than relying only on the browser preview.
- Pin the version and compare after upgrades. WeasyPrint explicitly warns that rendering can change between versions, even when the API does not break. Keep representative PDFs for regression checks and review output after updating the renderer. WeasyPrint API reference
How much to trust CSS support comparison charts
A parson AG comparison dated 14 March 2023 checks selected CSS Paged Media features across Prince, Antenna House Formatter, WeasyPrint, Paged.js, PDFreactor, pdfChip, Vivliostyle CLI, and wkhtmltopdf. Its table can help identify features to investigate, but it is a dated, scoped comparison—not a guarantee for current versions, every CSS property, or every document.
