Dark Matter takes its biggest adaptation risk by widening the story beyond its main character—and that choice gives the multiverse premise more emotional reach. Blake Crouch, who wrote the novel and created and showruns the series, expands the screen version’s point of view while changing material to protect the show’s own rules. The result is a science-fiction story whose central question is less about the mechanics of alternate worlds than about the life a person has, and the lives he might have had.
What is Dark Matter about?
Apple’s series follows Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man played by Joel Edgerton. After he is abducted into an alternate version of his life, Jason tries to find his way back to his family while confronting other possible lives—and other versions of himself. The first season was announced as a nine-episode adaptation of Crouch’s novel. Apple’s announcement identifies Crouch as the author, creator, writer, and showrunner.

The box at the center of the story functions as a corridor to alternate worlds. Its mechanism belongs to the series’ fictional rule system, not to established real-world physics. In a TIME interview, Crouch said viewers do not need detailed quantum-mechanics knowledge to follow the story. As he put it, “The science is there for those who want it.”

The novel is told almost entirely from Jason’s point of view. Crouch told TIME that the series moves among characters to explore more of their relationships, giving particular attention to Daniela and Jason2—material he felt was underexplored in the book. That is a meaningful structural change: time spent away from Jason can deepen the people and relationships that make his return matter, but it can also interrupt the forward pull of his search.

That tension is the adaptation’s central test. A story about branching realities can easily become a tour of clever possibilities. The broader perspective works best when it makes the consequences more personal: what an alternate life means to a spouse, a family, or a person who has to live with the choices made in another version of events.
How does the show balance its science-fiction premise with human stakes?
Executive producer Matt Tolmach described the appeal to TIME as “this idea playing out in a very grounded world, among very relatable characters—not superheroes, ordinary people exploring the roads not taken.” He framed the underlying questions in human terms: “Is this all there is? Is this who I am meant to be? Am I happy? Would I choose this life if I could go back to some of the forks in the road?”

- Multi-device control – Operate up to three different audio and video devices such as TVs, Blu-ray/DVD players, cable/satellite receivers, soundbars and more
- Best remote code library – Universal remote works with all major brands and supports thousands of the latest audio and video devices (not for use with radio frequency devices like Roku Streaming Sticks and Amazon Fire TV/Sticks)
- Simple setup – Add two AAA batteries (not included) and enjoy easy automatic code search and direct code entry programming, as well as master volume control to adjust the audio no matter which device is being used
- Preprogrammed for Samsung TVs – Universal remote’s TV device buttons is preprogrammed for immediate use with Samsung TVs
- Stylish finish and ergonomic design – The universal remote’s classic black finish blends with any decor while its contoured design fits comfortably in hand
That focus keeps the multiverse from being an end in itself. Jason’s predicament makes identity tangible: if other versions of your life exist, what makes this one yours, and what do you owe the people in it? Crouch also told TIME, “You can kind of do anything you want in storytelling if you make the audience fall in love with the characters.” That principle explains why character perspective matters so much here: the speculative setup needs emotional investment to carry its full weight.

What changed from the novel—and what stayed faithful?
The series keeps the book’s central premise and core story, but Crouch has described at least one deliberate departure from the source. He removed a scene he loved after concluding that it violated the rules he had established for the television version’s universe. The choice is a useful distinction between fidelity to a book and consistency within an adaptation: preserving a favorite scene is not worthwhile if it makes the screen story’s own logic feel arbitrary.

- 8K Active HDMI Coupler: This active HDMI repeater / HDMI extender / HDMI booster /HDMI Amplifier boosts signals by connecting two HDMI cables for longer runs between devices like PS5, Xbox Series X/S, RTX 30/40 GPUs, RX 7900/9000, Apple TV, Blu-ray players, projectors, and more. Use this reliable HDMI booster 8K instead of buying one long, expensive HDMI cable.(Use Certified HDMI 2.1 cables for optimal results. Not designed to fix defective or low-quality cables.)
- High-Performance HDMI Signal Booster: This active HDMI cable repeater supports 8K@60Hz, 4K@240Hz, and 4K@120Hz at up to 30ft; extends up to 50ft for 4K@60Hz and 75ft for 1080p Full HD. Supports CEC, eARC, HDR, and HDCP 2.3 for seamless performance.
- Cinematic Video & Immersive Audio: This active HDMI 2.1 repeater delivers stunning 8K video (4:4:4, 7680x4320@60Hz) per HDMI 2.1 standard. Backward compatible with 4K, 1440p, 1080p, and 3D pass-through, it supports Dolby Digital, DTS, and TrueHD for authentic surround sound.
- Durable & Wall-Mountable HDMI Amplifier: Compact aluminum enclosure resists wear and enhances heat dissipation. Lightweight design with clearly labeled INPUT and OUTPUT ports ensures simple plug-and-play setup. Includes screws for secure wall mounting in home theaters or AV systems.
- Optional Power for Weak Signals: This 8K HDMI coupler female to female includes a USB-C power option (5V/1A) using a charging cable and wall charger (sold separately). It’s ideal for extending connections from tablets, notebooks, or devices with low HDMI signal output to TVs and projectors. For long cable runs, AVRs, projectors, weaker HDMI outputs, flickering screens, or blackouts, connect the USB-C power to stabilize the signal.
So the risk is not wholesale reinvention. It is the more targeted decision to broaden the emotional field while making changes where the series needs them. Whether that balance succeeds is a matter of execution, but the rationale is clear: the adaptation is trying to make its world feel coherent on its own terms rather than treating every novel detail as untouchable.
Does the adaptation deliver on its ambition?
Dark Matter earns its sci-fi payoff when its alternate-world machinery serves the questions that prompted it: who Jason is, what he values, and whether a different path would truly have made him happier. The widened point of view is a gamble because it can diffuse the urgency of his journey. It is also the show’s best opportunity to make the stakes larger than one man’s escape, by showing how the people around him are bound up in the life he is trying to reclaim.

That is why the series’ appeal is not dependent on mastering its speculative mechanics. The premise supplies the pressure; the characters supply the reason to care. For viewers drawn to science fiction that uses an extraordinary device to examine ordinary relationships and choices, this is a strong adaptation strategy—and a compelling basis for calling the series a triumph.
