How to Check Whether YouTube Is Receiving Your RTMP Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The clearest sign that YouTube is receiving your RTMP feed is that video appears in the event’s preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room after you start the encoder. Check the preview for moving picture and expected audio, then read Stream health for status or error messages. Receiving a preview is not the same as making the event public: click Go live when you are ready, then verify playback on the channel or watch page.

Check the incoming feed in Live Control Room

  1. Open the right event. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or active stream in Live Control Room. Make sure it is the event you intend to send to; each event has its own stream setup.
  2. Check the encoder destination and credentials. In the encoder, confirm that the YouTube server URL and stream key match the values shown for that event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s setup guide explains how to copy them into an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using it again.
  3. Start sending the stream. Start the encoder or streaming software. Give YouTube time to detect the incoming feed.
  4. Watch the preview. When the feed arrives, the Live Control Room preview should show the picture. Look for motion rather than a still frame, and check that the expected audio is present. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real event.
  5. Read Stream health. Check the Stream health area for the current status, any error message and its instructions. YouTube documents stream health and real-time metrics in See your live stream’s metrics – Computer.
  6. Make the event live and verify audience playback. When the preview and status are satisfactory, click Go live if the event workflow requires it. Then open the channel or watch page, and, if relevant, check playback on a mobile device. YouTube’s encoder guide says to check the preview before going live.

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS for encoder streams and recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. That recommendation is about connection security; a preview and Stream health are still the practical checks that show whether the feed is arriving.

Preview, stream health and public playback: what each check proves

Check What it tells you What it does not establish by itself
Live Control Room preview The encoder’s video feed is reaching YouTube for the selected event. That viewers can watch the event publicly, or that the event has been taken live.
Stream health YouTube’s reported status and, when applicable, specific errors or instructions. That viewers can access the watch page or that playback is correct on every device.
Channel or watch-page playback Whether the event is available to an audience and playback works from that viewing location. By itself, the encoder’s detailed ingest status or the cause of a delivery problem.

Use the preview and Stream health first to diagnose ingest. Check the public page afterward to diagnose whether the audience can access the event. YouTube describes real-time metrics in See your live stream’s metrics – Android as well; available interface details can vary by device.

If no preview appears or Stream health reports a problem

  • Confirm the event’s server URL and stream key. A key or destination for a different event will not send the feed to the intended event. Check them against Live Control Room, not against a saved encoder profile you have not verified.
  • Follow the exact Stream health message. YouTube says the status area can provide specific errors and instructions. Resolve the reported issue before changing unrelated encoder settings.
  • Check upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends enough outbound bandwidth for the total stream bitrate with about 20% headroom. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce what is available. Its Streaming tips cover connection reliability and testing.
  • Test representative picture and sound. Send movement and audio similar to what the real event will contain, then inspect the preview and keep monitoring Stream health during the stream.
  • Separate ingest trouble from viewer-access trouble. If the preview is present, YouTube is receiving the feed. If the public page is not available, check whether you clicked Go live and verify the channel or watch-page access rather than treating the missing public playback as proof that ingest failed.

Encoder settings that can affect receipt

Correct credentials and a stable upload connection come first. If YouTube detects the stream but reports a health problem, check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the current table for your specific output rather than applying one figure to every stream. For example, YouTube’s table lists 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps; verify that value against the current table before configuring an encoder.
