How to Check Whether Your Website Is Indexed by Google

Use a Google site: search for a quick clue, then verify individual URLs and site-wide indexing patterns in Search Console.

To quickly check whether a website appears in Google Search, search site:example.com. To check one page more reliably, open Google Search Console, use URL Inspection on the full URL, and review its reported status. A missing result from a site: search is not proof that Google has not indexed the page, and a crawl or indexing request does not guarantee inclusion.

How do I check if my website is indexed by Google?

There are two useful checks, depending on what you need to know. A Google site: search is a quick public signal that some pages from a domain appear in Search. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool is the better way to diagnose a particular page you manage. For a broader view of your site, use the Page Indexing report rather than treating search results as a complete inventory.

Check Best for What it cannot tell you
Google site: search A fast, public indication that pages from a domain or URL appear in Search It is not exhaustive; no result does not establish that a page is unindexed. Google explains the limits of the operator.
Search Console URL Inspection Checking the reported status and diagnostics for a specific URL you manage You need access to the relevant Search Console property to inspect the page or request crawling. Google’s Search Console guide.
Page Indexing report Looking for patterns across URLs on a site It is a site-level report, not a replacement for inspecting an individual URL.

Use the public search when you need a quick clue or do not have access to the website’s Search Console property. Use Search Console when the answer needs to be actionable: it provides page-level status and diagnostics, while the Page Indexing report helps show whether many URLs share a pattern. Google notes that search operators have indexing and retrieval limits, so their results should not be treated as a complete database of every indexed URL.

How to use a Google site: search

  1. Open Google Search.
  2. To look for pages from a domain, enter site:example.com, replacing example.com with your domain.
  3. To focus on one known URL, enter a query such as site:https://example.com/path/to/page, replacing the example URL with the page you want to check.
  4. Look for the page among the returned results. If it appears, that URL is showing in Google Search.

This check is useful when you do not own the site or simply want a quick indication. It is not a full index lookup: Google says search operators are subject to indexing and retrieval limits, so results may omit pages that are indexed. The URL-prefix form can help narrow the query, but it does not make the operator exhaustive. Google recommends URL Inspection in Search Console for more reliable debugging. See Google’s guidance on the site search operator.

Think of a matching result as positive evidence that a page is appearing in Search, not as a complete audit of your website. A result for the domain tells you that at least some of its URLs are visible; it does not establish that every page is included. Likewise, an empty result for a particular URL is inconclusive. It may reflect the operator’s limits rather than the URL’s actual index status.

If your goal is to check one page, include its full URL in the query rather than relying only on a domain-wide search. If you are checking a site you manage and the result is missing, move to URL Inspection instead of repeatedly changing the search query. Google Search Central puts it plainly: “Because search operators are bound by indexing and retrieval limits, the URL Inspection tool in Search Console is more reliable for debugging purposes.”

How to check whether a specific URL is indexed in Search Console

For a page you control, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. Enter the full URL you want to diagnose and read the reported index status. If you also need to know whether Google can access the page as it is now, run the live URL test. The reported index status and a live test answer related but different questions: one reports Google’s status for the URL, while the live test checks current accessibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Search Console and select the property that contains the URL. You must have access to that property.
  2. Open URL Inspection and enter the complete page URL, including its protocol and path, for example https://example.com/about/.
  3. Review the index status and any diagnostic information shown for the URL.
  4. If you need to check what Google can access now, run the live URL test and review its result.
  5. If you have fixed an issue and want Google to revisit the page, use the available request-crawling option for that URL. Requesting a crawl is not a guarantee of indexing or immediate visibility.

Google describes URL Inspection as a page-level debugging tool and recommends it over relying on search operators for diagnosis. For instructions on using the service and its reports, see How To Use Search Console.

Keep the distinction between the reported index status and the live test in mind when a page has recently changed. The inspection result describes Google’s reported status for the URL; the live test checks whether Google can access the current version now. Passing the live test does not, by itself, mean the URL has already been indexed. It is a check of current accessibility, not confirmation of inclusion.

URL Inspection is intended for URLs in a Search Console property you can access. If you do not own or manage the site, you cannot use the property’s private diagnostics or request a crawl through that property; use the public site: search only as a rough indication. If you do manage it, record the diagnostic result and investigate the specific issue it identifies before requesting another crawl.

How to check indexing patterns across your website

When the concern is more than one URL, open the Page Indexing report in Search Console. Use it to look for patterns across the site’s pages, then inspect representative URLs to understand an individual page’s reported status. This is more useful than counting results from a site: query, because operator results are not a complete URL inventory.

Crawl Stats can complement that review by showing Google’s crawling and access activity. Crawling activity is not the same thing as index inclusion: a page can be fetched by Googlebot without appearing in Google’s index. Use the Page Indexing report and URL Inspection to investigate index status; consult Crawl Stats when you need context about crawling activity. Google’s overview of Search Console is available at How To Use Search Console.

For a site-wide concern, look for whether URLs share a reported pattern instead of assuming that one missing page represents the whole site. If several pages appear to have the same issue, the Page Indexing report is the place to see that broader pattern. Then use URL Inspection on individual examples to understand what Google reports for each URL. A site-level report helps direct the investigation; it does not replace checking a page when you need its specific status.

Similarly, do not use the number of site: results as a definitive count of indexed pages. Search operators may omit URLs because of their indexing and retrieval limits. Search Console’s reports are the more appropriate tools for assessing site-wide patterns and debugging the pages you manage.

What must be true for Google to index a page?

Google’s technical minimums are that the page is accessible to Googlebot, returns a successful HTTP 200 response, and contains indexable content. These are eligibility requirements, not a promise that Google will include a page. Google states: “Just because your page meets these requirements doesn’t mean that it will be indexed; indexing isn’t guaranteed.” Read the full requirements at Google Search Technical Requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Googlebot can access it: crawling restrictions can prevent Google from fetching the page.
  • The response is HTTP 200: a successful response is necessary, but it does not by itself make a page indexable.
  • The content is indexable: directives or other page conditions may tell Google not to include the URL.

Google distinguishes between crawling and indexing. Crawling means Googlebot fetched a URL; it does not mean the page was accepted into the index. Check the index status in URL Inspection and use the available diagnostics and reports to investigate exclusions. Google’s information about appearing in Search is at How to Get Information on Google.

These requirements are a useful first checklist when a page is missing. First ask whether Googlebot can reach the URL. Then confirm that the response is HTTP 200. Finally, make sure the page is not marked in a way that prevents indexing and that it contains indexable content. A page that satisfies all three conditions is eligible from a technical standpoint, but Google still decides whether to include it.

It is also important not to confuse “Google crawled it” with “Google indexed it.” A crawl is evidence that Googlebot fetched the URL at some point; the page may still be excluded from the index. If Search Console reports that a page was crawled, use its index status and diagnostics to understand the separate indexing outcome.

Why isn’t my page showing up in Google Search?

Start with the diagnostic result in URL Inspection rather than guessing from the absence of a search result. Then check whether Google can fetch the URL, what response it receives, and whether an indexing directive or the page’s content makes it ineligible. The distinction between robots.txt and noindex matters when troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check robots.txt access

A robots.txt rule can block Googlebot from crawling a URL. If Googlebot cannot fetch the page, it may also be unable to see instructions on that page. Robots.txt controls crawling; it is not the same as a page-level instruction to exclude content from the index.

When troubleshooting, check whether the URL is blocked from crawling before relying on a directive placed on the page. If Googlebot cannot access the page, it cannot read a page-level instruction there. In particular, a robots.txt block can prevent Google from seeing a noindex directive that you intended it to follow.

Check for a noindex directive

A noindex directive, delivered in a page’s HTML or an HTTP header, tells Google not to index the page after Googlebot can access and read the instruction. If robots.txt blocks the URL, Google may not be able to discover that noindex rule. To remove a page from Search through noindex, Google must be able to crawl it and read the directive. See Google’s guidance on blocking search indexing with noindex.

That difference matters in both directions. If you want a page to be excluded, a crawl block is not a substitute for a readable noindex instruction: Google must be able to access the URL to see that directive. If you want a page indexed, check that an unintended noindex instruction is not present and that Googlebot can crawl the page. Change the underlying configuration first, then use URL Inspection to review the page and decide whether to request another crawl.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the response and page content

Confirm that the URL returns HTTP 200 to Googlebot and provides useful, indexable content. A successful response alone is not enough: Google also requires access and indexable content, and meeting those technical conditions still does not guarantee inclusion. If a page has changed, verify the URL and the current version rather than assuming a previous crawl reflects its present state.

A response code is only one part of the check. A page returning HTTP 200 can still be inaccessible to Googlebot because of a crawling restriction, or it can contain a directive that prevents indexing. Conversely, clearing a technical issue does not prove that Google has already revisited the page. Use the live URL test to check current accessibility and the reported index status to check what Search Console says about index inclusion.

Use the right evidence for the question

  • If no site: result appears, treat that as inconclusive and inspect the URL in Search Console if you manage it.
  • If Search Console indicates Google crawled the page, do not infer that it is indexed; crawling and indexing are separate outcomes.
  • If multiple URLs have a similar problem, look for a shared pattern in the Page Indexing report, then investigate examples with URL Inspection.

For broader crawl-error troubleshooting, consult Google Search Central’s crawling errors guide.

In short, diagnose the type of problem before choosing a remedy. A blocked URL is an access or crawling issue; a readable noindex is an instruction not to index; a non-200 response fails Google’s stated technical minimum; and an eligible page can still be absent because eligibility does not ensure inclusion. The inspection tools help separate these cases so you can correct the relevant issue rather than repeatedly submitting a URL without changing anything.

When should you request Google to crawl a page again?

Request another crawl after correcting a problem that prevented Google from accessing or indexing the page, or after making a meaningful change that Google should revisit. For an individual URL, Search Console’s URL Inspection can be used by a property owner or full user to request crawling. Fix the underlying issue first; a request does not repair the page or override an indexing decision.

Google says recrawling can take days to weeks, and not every submitted page will be included. That is a qualitative expectation, not a fixed deadline. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same unchanged URL as if each request guarantees a faster result. Google’s instructions are at Ask Google to Recrawl Your Website.

Use a request as a prompt for Google to revisit a corrected or meaningfully updated page, not as a shortcut around the technical checks. Before submitting, confirm that Googlebot can access the URL, that it returns HTTP 200, and that the content is eligible for indexing. If the page remains blocked or carries an unintended noindex directive, requesting a crawl will not fix that underlying condition.

After requesting a crawl, allow time for Google to revisit the URL and process it. Days to weeks is Google’s qualitative guidance, not a service-level deadline; timing can vary, and a request does not guarantee the page will appear. If it is still missing, check the reported status and diagnostics again rather than assuming a request was either instantaneous or successful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you submit a sitemap?

A sitemap can help Google discover URLs, particularly when a site is new or has many pages. It is a discovery aid, not an indexing command: submitting one does not guarantee when Google will crawl a URL or whether the URL will be indexed. Use Search Console’s reports and URL Inspection to diagnose status rather than interpreting sitemap submission as confirmation that pages are in Search. Google’s Search Console guidance covers sitemap and site-management tools at How To Use Search Console; its crawling guidance explains why submission is not a guarantee at Troubleshoot Google Search Crawling Errors.

A sitemap is most useful as a way to help Google learn about URLs, such as on a new site or when there are many pages to discover. It should not be treated as proof that Google fetched or indexed every listed URL. For the status of a particular page, use URL Inspection; for repeated site-wide issues, review the Page Indexing report. Discovery, crawling, and indexing are related stages, but one does not guarantee the next.

How to check whether a specific URL is indexed: quick checklist

  1. Search for the exact URL with site:https://example.com/path/to/page as a quick public check.
  2. If it does not appear, do not conclude that it is unindexed; the operator is not exhaustive.
  3. If you manage the site, inspect the full URL in Search Console and review the reported index status.
  4. Run a live URL test if you need to know whether Google can access the current page.
  5. Check Googlebot access, the HTTP 200 response, indexability, and any robots.txt or noindex issue.
  6. For multiple URLs, look for patterns in the Page Indexing report and use Crawl Stats only as context about crawling activity.
  7. Correct the issue before requesting a recrawl, and remember that neither a request nor sitemap submission guarantees inclusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my website is indexed by Google?

Search Google for site:example.com for a quick public clue. For a page you manage, use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool; for patterns across the site, review the Page Indexing report.

How do I check whether a specific URL is indexed?

Try site:https://example.com/path/to/page for a fast indication. If you manage the URL, enter its full address in Search Console’s URL Inspection tool and review the reported index status. A missing operator result is inconclusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a page not appear in a site: search?

The site: operator is subject to indexing and retrieval limits and does not return a complete list of indexed URLs. No result alone does not prove the page is unindexed; use URL Inspection for a page you manage.

Does a successful live URL test mean my page is indexed?

No. The live URL test checks whether Google can access the page now. It is different from the reported index status, and passing the test does not by itself confirm inclusion in Google’s index.

What is the difference between robots.txt and noindex?

Robots.txt can block Googlebot from crawling a URL. A noindex directive tells Google not to index a page after Googlebot can access and read that instruction. If robots.txt blocks the URL, Google may not be able to see its noindex directive.

Does Google index every page that returns HTTP 200?

No. Google also requires Googlebot access and indexable content, and meeting all three technical minimums—access, HTTP 200, and indexable content—does not guarantee indexing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does Google take to recrawl a page after I request it?

Google says recrawling can take days to weeks. This is not a fixed deadline, and a request does not guarantee that the page will be crawled or included in Search.

Will submitting a sitemap get my pages indexed?

A sitemap can help Google discover URLs, especially on a new site or one with many pages, but submission does not guarantee crawling or indexing. Check page status with URL Inspection and site-wide patterns in the Page Indexing report.

The Bottom Line

Use site: searches for a quick indication, not a definitive inventory. For pages you manage, Search Console’s URL Inspection tool is the more reliable page-level check, and the Page Indexing report helps reveal site-wide patterns. If a page is missing, verify access, HTTP 200, and indexable content; fix any robots.txt or noindex issue before requesting a recrawl. Neither a crawl request nor a sitemap guarantees indexing.
