To check current Visual Studio IDE access, sign in to the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal with the account the subscription was assigned to, confirm it is active, then sign in to Visual Studio with that same account. Transferability depends on how the subscription was acquired: volume-license subscriptions may be reassigned by an organization administrator, retail subscriptions require a transfer request through Microsoft customer service, and complimentary or Not For Resale subscriptions cannot be transferred.
How to verify your Visual Studio subscription
- Check the portal. Open the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal using the account you believe owns the subscription. If you have more than one Microsoft account or subscriptions assigned to different email addresses, sign out and try the account associated with the subscription.
- Check Visual Studio itself. Launch the IDE and sign in with the same assigned account. If you are already signed in, open the account settings and confirm Visual Studio recognizes the subscription. Microsoft says, “Visual Studio authenticates access to the IDE through the account you sign in with.” Microsoft Learn explains IDE access and authentication.
- Resolve missing access with the assigning organization. Confirm the email address, subscription status, and whether the subscription is provided by an employer or school. Ask its administrator to verify the assignment and access settings. If the account record remains unclear, contact Microsoft subscription support.
- Identify the acquisition channel. Find out whether the subscription is retail, volume-licensed, or complimentary/Not For Resale before deciding whether it can be transferred. A seller’s assurance or a product key alone does not verify a current subscription or confer transfer rights.
Can the subscription be transferred?
Microsoft’s transfer guidance differs by subscription type. The ability to move an organizational agreement or change Azure billing ownership is not the same as transferring an individual Visual Studio IDE subscription.

| Subscription type | Who handles reassignment? | Transfer status |
|---|---|---|
| Volume licensing | The organization’s administrator | Microsoft says the administrator can reassign the subscription within the organization. |
| Retail | The administrator contacts Microsoft customer service | Microsoft says the administrator can transfer it through customer service. |
| Complimentary or Not For Resale | Not applicable | These subscriptions cannot be transferred. |
See Microsoft’s subscription transfer guidance for the applicable process. Visual Studio subscriptions are assigned to named individuals and must not be shared; see Microsoft’s subscription benefits guidance.

An active portal record and successful IDE sign-in support the conclusion that the signed-in account currently has subscription-based access. They do not, by themselves, establish that a third-party seller obtained the subscription legitimately, that an offer for resale is valid, or that you have the right to resell or transfer it. Microsoft does not describe one universal verification process for every resale offer or jurisdiction. For a specific offer, have Microsoft or the organization administrator confirm the subscription type, current assignment, purchase channel, and applicable terms.

Does a product key prove the license is genuine?
No. For Visual Studio 2026, Microsoft says subscription sign-in is used and no product key is required. Keys may be available for certain other products and earlier Visual Studio versions, but a key alone is not proof of current IDE subscription access or transferability. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 subscription information and its product-key guidance.

A change in subscription level or an expiration can affect access and validation conditions. Check the portal for the current status. If you need keys for older-version products, review and preserve any relevant keys before the subscription expires; Microsoft’s Visual Studio Subscriptions documentation describes subscription access and benefits.
