Yes—PlayStation Portal needs a paired PS5 to use Remote Play. The PS5 runs a compatible game installed on it and streams the picture and sound to Portal over Wi-Fi, while Portal sends your controls back to the console. The PS5 must be online and either on or in Rest Mode. A separate Cloud Streaming feature can work with the PS5 off, but it has different subscription and game-eligibility requirements.
How PlayStation Portal Remote Play works
Portal is a remote screen and controller for a PS5, not a standalone console for Remote Play. The game runs on the paired PS5; the console streams it over the network to Portal. You can use Portal away from home wherever broadband Wi-Fi is available, so it does not have to be on the same home network as the PS5.

Sony’s current guidance calls for at least 5 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi for Portal Remote Play and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those figures do not guarantee smooth play: Wi-Fi signal quality, congestion and latency also affect the stream.
What you need to set up Remote Play
- A PS5 connected to the internet and signed in to the same PlayStation account used on Portal.
- A compatible game installed on the PS5.
- Remote Play enabled on the console.
- The PS5 powered on, or configured to stay reachable in Rest Mode.
- Broadband Wi-Fi for Portal.
Enable Remote Play on PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, sign in to your PlayStation account, and install the latest available PS5 system software.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want Portal to wake the console from Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account and connect it to Wi-Fi. Use Portal’s Remote Play option to connect to the PS5.
The PS5 must remain powered on or in Rest Mode for Remote Play; a fully powered-off console cannot supply a Remote Play session.

Can you use PlayStation Portal without your PS5?
Not for Remote Play. Portal’s Remote Play connection depends on the paired PS5 being online and on or in Rest Mode. However, Portal also supports Cloud Streaming, a separate way to play eligible PS5 games streamed from Sony’s cloud service. With Cloud Streaming, the PS5 can be off or in use by another account.

A game’s online multiplayer may separately require a PlayStation Plus membership, even when you are using Remote Play. Cloud Streaming has its own connection guidance from Sony: at least 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Game availability and supported regions can change, so check Sony’s current local catalog and eligibility terms before relying on a particular title.

PS5, PS4 and game compatibility
Portal Remote Play works with PS5 consoles, not PS4. Not every PS5 game is compatible: Sony excludes games that require PS VR or PS VR2, games needing additional peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed on PS5 with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Check a specific game’s compatibility if it is the reason you are considering Portal.

You can listen through Portal’s built-in speakers, connect wired audio through its 3.5 mm jack, or use compatible PlayStation Link wireless devices. Sony names PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset as compatible examples. These accessories are optional; they are not required to set up Remote Play.
