As of October 7, 2026, WhatsApp lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer; it has also announced that iOS 15.5 or newer will be required starting November 30, 2026.
Find the operating system version on your phone

- Read the number beside iOS Version.
Compare your version with WhatsApp’s minimum
WhatsApp’s official Android download page lists Android OS 6.0 or above. Its download page lists iOS 15.1 or newer for iPhone and iPadOS 15.1 or newer for iPad. Apple’s UK App Store listing also states that WhatsApp Messenger requires iOS 15.1 or later.

These are operating-system requirements, not a guarantee based on a phone’s model name alone. The relevant check is the version actually installed—and, if it is too old, whether an official update is available for that exact device.

As of October 7, 2026, WhatsApp’s download page and Apple’s UK App Store listing show iOS 15.1 as the current minimum. WhatsApp Help Center search-result text announces that starting November 30, 2026, only iOS 15.5 and newer will be supported. That is an upcoming cutoff, not the current minimum on the date of this check. If your iPhone runs iOS 15.1, 15.2, 15.3 or 15.4, check whether an official update to iOS 15.5 or later is available before that date. The supported-devices page is the place to recheck the announcement and requirements.

If your phone is below the minimum
- Open the phone’s official software-update screen and check for an update. If one is available, install it, then check the OS version again.
- If no supported update is offered for your exact phone, WhatsApp’s download page points users to WhatsApp in a browser for unsupported devices. Browser access is a separate option; it does not make the phone’s operating system supported.
- Consider another phone only after checking whether your current model has an official update path. A replacement needs to run a supported OS; the model name by itself does not establish compatibility.
What to expect if support changes
WhatsApp says, “We’ll tell you if we stop supporting your device or operating system,” according to its Help Center page about supported devices. A primary phone is needed to register an account and link new devices. WhatsApp lists linked-device options including computers, web, tablets and other supported devices, but these are not a substitute for a supported primary phone when registering an account or linking new devices; see its Android download page.
