As of October 7, 2026, WhatsApp lists Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer as its minimums. The iPhone threshold is scheduled to rise to iOS 15.5 on November 30, 2026, so an iPhone that meets today’s minimum may not meet the next one.
WhatsApp’s current minimum operating systems
Phone age or brand alone does not determine compatibility; the installed operating-system version does. WhatsApp’s supported-devices guidance lists these minimums as of October 7, 2026:

A related WhatsApp operating-systems result still displays Android 5.0 alongside a footnote announcing the move to Android 6.0 on September 8, 2026. Because that transition date has passed, use Android 6.0 as the current threshold rather than relying on the older wording. WhatsApp says retiring older operating systems lets it support newer ones and keep up with advances in technology and security.
What an old phone needs to set up WhatsApp
Meeting the OS minimum is not enough for a new account. The phone must also be able to receive an SMS message or phone call during number verification. WhatsApp says a device that works only over Wi-Fi cannot be used to set up a new account.

How to check whether your phone can still use WhatsApp
- Open the phone’s settings and check its installed Android or iOS version. The exact menu names vary by model and software version.
- Check the phone maker’s system-update settings for an available update. WhatsApp’s compatibility guidance does not establish which individual models can update, so confirm eligibility with the manufacturer.
- Make sure the phone can receive an SMS message or call at the number you intend to verify. Wi-Fi access alone will not satisfy the requirement for setting up a new account.
- If you use an iPhone, compare its version with the date-sensitive threshold: iOS 15.1 currently, then iOS 15.5 from November 30, 2026.
What to do when the phone falls below the minimum
Install an available system update
If the manufacturer offers an update that brings the phone to the required version, install it and then check compatibility again. WhatsApp sets the minimum OS but does not publish model-by-model update eligibility in the cited guidance.
Move to a supported phone if it cannot update
WhatsApp says it notifies users before support ends and sends upgrade reminders. Its stated route when a phone is no longer supported is to move to a supported device. Before buying a replacement, check the exact model’s update availability, carrier compatibility, and ability to receive verification SMS messages or calls.

Consider a linked companion device cautiously
WhatsApp names selected iPads, Android tablets, and WearOS watches as devices that can be linked to a main phone. That does not establish that linking lets an unsupported phone serve as the main device or bypass its OS requirement. Check WhatsApp’s current linked-device instructions before relying on this option.
Can you use WhatsApp without updating your phone?
Only if the phone already meets the applicable minimum and can complete verification. If its OS is below the current minimum, WhatsApp’s documented path is to update the phone if the manufacturer supports an update, or move to a supported device. For iPhones, account for the scheduled increase to iOS 15.5 on November 30, 2026.
