Passing the minimum row means your hardware meets Rockstar’s published baseline; it does not promise a particular resolution, graphics preset or frame rate.
Use the Windows checks below, compare every component rather than only the CPU or RAM, and treat any unlisted, integrated or mobile graphics chipset as uncertain unless Rockstar explicitly lists it as supported.

Rockstar’s current PC requirements
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s PC system-requirements article was last updated April 30, 2024. Its table applies to the Windows PC version and gives two comparison points: minimum and recommended. The model names are published examples, not benchmark results or a guarantee of a particular gaming experience.

| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB | 12 GB |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with 2 GB, or AMD Radeon R9 280 with 3 GB | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB, or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4 GB |
| Storage | 150 GB HDD space | 150 GB |
| Sound | DirectX-compatible sound card | DirectX-compatible sound card |
The table does not define a separate 1080p target, graphics preset or frames-per-second target. A computer can satisfy the minimum row and still require conservative settings, while a system at or above the recommended row is not given a quantified performance guarantee by Rockstar.

What “can run” should mean
Meeting the minimum row
If every component is at least as capable as the corresponding minimum example, you can accurately say that the PC meets Rockstar’s listed minimum requirements. That is a compatibility statement, not a prediction of smoothness. It does not establish that the game will hold a particular frame rate or look good at your monitor’s native resolution.
Falling between minimum and recommended
Rockstar publishes no additional official tiers between the two rows. A system that clears the minimum but falls short of one or more recommended examples still meets the listed minimum, but there is no official number that converts the gap into an expected frame rate. Describe it as “minimum-compliant,” not “recommended.”
Below minimum or impossible to match
If one part is below the minimum, the PC does not meet the published baseline. If a specification is missing, unlisted, integrated, or a mobile/AGP variant that cannot be matched confidently to the table, report the result as uncertain rather than promising that the game will work. Rockstar cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible and that unlisted specifications may not be supported.
Step 1: Check Windows, processor and installed memory
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select System, then About.
- Record the Windows edition and version, the processor’s full model name and the installed RAM shown under device specifications.
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit. The current Rockstar table lists Windows 10 64-bit for both minimum and recommended configurations.
Write down the complete processor model, including its series and suffix. “Intel Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” alone is not enough for a meaningful comparison because models within the same family can have very different capabilities. Compare your exact model with the examples in the table, and do not treat a newer-sounding family name as automatic proof of equivalence.
Use installed memory, not the amount currently free. Background applications consume memory while the game is running, but Rockstar’s table specifies a system-memory threshold rather than a measurement of free memory at a particular moment.
Step 2: Identify the exact graphics adapter and VRAM
- Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- Choose Performance, then select each GPU entry.
- Record the full adapter name and the dedicated GPU memory value when Windows provides it.
- If Task Manager does not make the model clear, open Start, type
dxdiag, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and inspect the display information.
Compare the exact graphics model and its dedicated video-memory amount with the graphics row. The memory figures in Rockstar’s table are part of each named example: the minimum Nvidia example is paired with 2 GB, the minimum AMD example with 3 GB, the recommended Nvidia example with 6 GB and the recommended AMD example with 4 GB. Do not compare only “Nvidia” versus “AMD,” or only a broad family such as “GTX” or “Radeon.”

Dedicated memory versus shared memory
Laptops and small PCs may show integrated graphics that borrow ordinary system RAM. That shared amount is not the same thing as a dedicated graphics-memory figure in Rockstar’s table. If the computer has both integrated and discrete adapters, record the discrete model and check which adapter the game is configured to use. If only integrated graphics appears, the machine cannot be confidently matched to the listed dedicated-GPU examples.
Mobile and older expansion-card caveats
A mobile GPU with a similar name is not automatically identical to its desktop counterpart. The same caution applies to older AGP cards. Rockstar specifically warns that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, so an apparent name match is not a support guarantee.
Step 3: Check the installation drive
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Find the drive where you intend to install the game and read its available free space.
- Compare that free-space figure with Rockstar’s storage requirement before starting the download.
Rockstar lists 150 GB of HDD space for both rows. This is a capacity requirement, not a statement that an HDD and SSD deliver identical loading behavior. The table does not require an SSD. Leave enough room for the launcher, the operating system and normal temporary files rather than treating the requirement as a reason to fill the drive to its last gigabyte.
Step 4: Compare every row, not just the part that looks strongest
Make a five-part comparison: operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU plus dedicated VRAM, and storage. The sound requirement is a DirectX-compatible sound card. A powerful graphics card cannot compensate for an operating system or processor that is below the minimum, and a fast processor cannot make an unsupported integrated adapter equivalent to a listed GPU.
- Operating system: confirm Windows 10 64-bit as specified by the current table.
- CPU: compare the full model name, not merely the brand or product family.
- RAM: compare installed system memory with the appropriate row.
- GPU: compare the exact adapter and its dedicated VRAM; identify discrete graphics on laptops.
- Storage: verify free space on the actual installation drive.
- Sound: confirm a DirectX-compatible sound device.
The slowest or least compatible component determines the result. Do not average the categories into an overall score, because Rockstar does not publish such a score.

How to classify your result
All components meet the minimum examples
Use the wording: “This PC meets Rockstar’s published minimum requirements.” Add that the requirements table does not specify a target frame rate, resolution or preset. That wording is precise and avoids turning a compatibility threshold into a performance promise.

All components meet the recommended examples
You can say that the PC meets the recommended row in Rockstar’s table. You still cannot claim a guaranteed frame rate or a particular visual preset from that information alone, because Rockstar does not publish those targets alongside the hardware list.
One component is short
Identify the exact shortfall and say that the PC does not meet the listed minimum. Avoid buying a random upgrade based on a brand name. The correct remedy depends on the deficient part, the rest of the system, your display target and the budget available.
A specification is unknown
Use “cannot be confirmed” until you identify the exact model. This is especially important for graphics: “Intel graphics,” “laptop GTX,” or “Radeon graphics” is not enough to establish a match with Rockstar’s examples.
Installation and online prerequisites
Hardware compatibility is only one part of readiness. Rockstar says installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account. Internet access is required for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. The PC release also requires the Rockstar platform and other software components listed by the publisher; install the launcher and follow its prompts when setting up the game.
These account, launcher and internet conditions are access prerequisites, not extra frame-rate requirements. A computer can meet the hardware table and still fail to install or authenticate if the account, launcher or connection requirement is not satisfied.
Why older requirement lists can mislead you
Rockstar’s 2019 launch announcement used Windows 7 SP1 in its minimum operating-system row and an early Windows 10 build in the recommended row. The current Customer Support article, updated April 30, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit for both rows and should be the reference for a current compatibility check.
Rank #4
Rockstar also warns: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” Treat the table as time-sensitive. Check the publisher’s current support page again when you buy, reinstall or upgrade rather than relying on a screenshot or an old launch article.

What the requirements do not tell you
No official FPS result is attached to the table
The named CPU and GPU combinations are specification examples. The published table does not provide average FPS, frame-time data, resolution testing, preset testing or a benchmark for any named card. Do not infer a guaranteed number from the component names.
No universal “recommended settings” follow automatically
Without a stated monitor resolution, refresh rate, visual-quality preference and frame-rate goal, “runs well” has no single technical meaning. Two PCs that both pass the same row can be used with different expectations. State your target separately when deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
Minimum compliance is not a warranty
Meeting a listed threshold means the hardware matches Rockstar’s published baseline at the time of the table. It does not guarantee compatibility with every driver, laptop implementation, peripheral or future game update. Unlisted hardware remains a support uncertainty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Deciding whether an upgrade is necessary
Start with the diagnosed shortfall
First identify which row fails: CPU, RAM, graphics, operating system or storage. Do not replace a component until the exact model and the rest of the system are known. For graphics, include dedicated VRAM and whether the adapter is desktop, mobile or integrated.
Match the upgrade to your target
Decide what you want from the game—basic compatibility, a chosen resolution, a visual-quality level or a frame-rate target—before selecting hardware. Rockstar’s table establishes minimum and recommended examples but does not nominate an upgrade path for every computer.
Check whole-system compatibility and cost
An upgrade must fit the existing PC, not merely exceed one number on the table. Check the system’s supported processor and memory type, graphics-card space and power capacity, operating-system support and the total cost of the change. If several parts are below minimum, replacing only one may not produce a balanced result.
Because the appropriate component depends on the exact shortfall and target, a generic shopping list is less reliable than a model-by-model diagnosis.
Troubleshooting common checking mistakes
“My PC has enough RAM, so it should run.”
RAM is only one row. Recheck the CPU, exact GPU and dedicated VRAM, operating-system architecture, storage space and sound requirement before drawing a conclusion.

Similar branding does not establish equivalence. Return to Task Manager or dxdiag, record the complete model and compare it with the exact examples in Rockstar’s table. Treat mobile and integrated variants cautiously.
“The installer says there is not enough space.”
Check free space on the drive selected in the launcher, not merely the capacity printed on the drive. The relevant test is available space at installation time, and Rockstar lists the same capacity requirement for both hardware rows.
“The PC meets the table but performance is disappointing.”
That outcome does not contradict the table. The table supplies compatibility thresholds, not FPS or preset guarantees. Separate the question “Does the hardware meet the published minimum?” from “Does it meet my preferred performance target?”
“The game will not activate even though the hardware passes.”
Check the Rockstar Games account, launcher installation, internet connection and entitlement verification. Those are separate prerequisites from the hardware comparison.
